Don’t You Want To Be Happy? )
elisi: Edwin and Charles (Busy by famira)
It's the Cherub's birthday today (She's 5! How did that happen? Although to be honest it feels like more than five years since she arrived...). Anyway, I'm very busy, but I've seen a lot of comics related posts the last few days, and thought about writing my own.

And then I decided against it. Because the thing is: I don't care. My emotional investment is literally zero. Or, to be more specific, my investment in the story is non-existant. (Not that I ever considered them canon, but the comics have literally gone out of their way to make sure that I'm incapable of accepting them as anything except crack-fic. Although, taken as crack-fic, they're pretty awesome, and I'm very happy that others can enjoy them. Plus I still think that the Spuffy-stuff is fun. I always like Spuffy.)

Anyway, where was I? Oh yes. Any emotions come from my anger/disappointment in the writers. (I could go on at length about this, but I won't. I just hope the whole thing will be resolved with as little fail as possible!)

And now I shall go sort out the house and pretty-fy it with balloons and banners for later. :)

ETA: The Cherub has (obviously) been looking forward to her birthday for a long time, waiting for it to be autumn so it'd arrive. Which led to this declaration yesterday: "And tomorrow it's my birthday and also it's going to be autumn and there'll be conkers EVERYWHERE in the whole world!"

So now you know.

Pre-view for #37.

The subject line (for those puzzled by it) is a reference to this post by the inimitable Barb, and basically means that I am a total sucker for Spuffiness.

(Shut up. I have ZERO expectations that it's going anywhere, but... *deep sigh* They're so good together.)
elisi: Edwin and Charles (Welsh Overlord (RTD) by ?)
[livejournal.com profile] solitary_summer has written an extraordinary essay examining RTD's Who-era (Death, life, and what it means to be human in RTD's Doctor Who and Torchwood). Very long, very in-depth, absolutely worth your while!

Or, if you feel like something completely different, you could go read [livejournal.com profile] angearia's interview with Scott Allie. I am not going to comment on it, since I'm still stuck in WTF-mode. No really. At least it explains very well why the comics (and everyone's characterisation, Angel's especially) is in such a shambles. Many thanks to Emmie for her excellent questions btw.

ETA: Re. Angel, let me pimp [livejournal.com profile] the_royal_anna's exquisite Angel’s Life in Five Acts. Excerpt:

The girl with the golden hair held out her hands. "If you turn over the child," she said, "You can save the world."

But he shook his head, and stood firm.

"I'll save the child," he said, "If I have to turn over the world."

I'm feeling generally pissed off, but shall spare you the (mostly RL-related) details. Instead I bring you a couple of quotes from our own Mr Whedon, from way back when. Please can we have that Joss back?

But nowadays I’m really cranky about comics. . . . Because most of them are just really, really poorly written soft-core. And I miss good old storytelling. And you know what else I miss ? Super powers. Why is it now that everybody’s like ‘I can reverse the polarity of your ions !’ Like in one big flash everybody’s Doctor Strange. I like the guys that can stick to walls and change into sand and stuff. I don’t understand anything anymore. And all the girls are wearing nothing, and they all look like they have implants. Well, I sound like a very old man, and a cranky one, but it’s true.” (Dark Horse interview)

What we don’t have, which is what some science fiction shows have, is we can’t just do a thing because it seems cool. Everything that we pitch, everything that we put out there, whether or not it works, is based on the idea of: The audience has been through this. A normal girl goes through this. A normal guy deals with this. You know, it’s issues of sexuality, popularity, jobs. Whatever it is, it’s got to be based in realism. We can’t just say, you know, `The warship’s come and, you know, they transmogrify, the-blah, blah, blah.’ We can’t do that. We can go to some pretty strange places, but at the start, we always have to be about, `How does the audience relate to having done this themselves ?’ (Fresh Air Interview)

And Happy Birthday today to [livejournal.com profile] gabrielleabelle and [livejournal.com profile] katjs11.

Hope you've all had/are having a fabulous day! *sends many hugs and good wishes for the future*

I don't have anything in the way of presents, but I did make a macro... ;) (Free to good homes btw. Credit would be nice, but is not necessary.)

ETA: OMG! Miniature Art on the Tip of Pencil by Dalton Ghetti. Unbelievable!

So, I read the Riley one-shot. Here be spoilers and a question )

Via this page of Joss Whedon quotes:

It’s better to be a spy in the house of love, you know ? . . . If I made ‘Buffy the Lesbian Separatist,’ a series of lectures on PBS on why there should be feminism, no one would be coming to the party, and it would be boring. The idea of changing culture is important to me, and it can only be done in a popular medium.

On the whole, I'd greatly have preferred the lectures.

ETA: Since I'm here, this vid is very, very good at showing the problematic nature of some of Joss' work:

My Medea by [livejournal.com profile] yunitsa. Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] rm for helping me find it again.

First of all, today is a good day because this afternoon the new season of Horrible Histories starts! For those of you not in the UK/without children, this is a TV show based on the popular books, and it one of the best, funniest and most original things on TV, full stop. Since I couldn't decide which part to share with you, here is the very first thing I saw:

Now go on and waste a few hours on youtube.... You won't regret it, trust me. (It's EDUCATIONAL!!!)

***

Since time is sadly not my friend I've not paid much attention to the remix, but here are a couple of recs:

I Would Keep Myself (Mirror Mirror Remix) by [livejournal.com profile] ruuger (notes here). They didn't win the battle, but life still has to go on. Post-Chosen AU. Bleak, yet uplifting, and explores things rarely seen.

Through the Wardrobe (The Three Worlds Remix) by [livejournal.com profile] joking. The wardrobe is a gateway to another world - and to memories we cannot bear to forget. Narnia/BtVS/Doctor Who crossover, and just works, beautifully so! (I happened to beta-read this one, which mostly involved me going 'Oh wow, this is good!)

And then something re. s8. Under a cut, 'cause who'd like that kinda thing taking up their flists? )
elisi: Edwin and Charles (Twangel by moscow_watcher)
Had a thought the other day, re. the current story lines in s8 and AtF. Spoilers for everything under the cut.

Sparkles!

elisi: Edwin and Charles (Twangel by moscow_watcher)
Look what [livejournal.com profile] moscow_watcher made for me!!! Isn't it wonderful?

And since I'm here, I thought I'd rec [livejournal.com profile] thedeadlyhook's wonderful post How to Win Friends and Alienate Readers. (If I had been asked to sit in, in an editorial capacity, on a meeting to plan out the comics continuation of a popular TV show, penned by its creator, that happened to have a female lead and a large following of adult women, here's what I probably would NOT have advised...)
elisi: Edwin and Charles (twilight by nutshell @ journalfen)
But... someone should make an icon of Twangel (WITH SPARKLES!) that says:

"What if I'm not the hero? [dramatic pause] What if I'm... The Bad Guy?"

Or maybe it should be:

"What if I'm not the hero? What if I'm... [dramatic pause] The Bad Guy?"

Not sure how you'd make a pause in an icon though. (ETA: Of course you could make a .gif, but having thought about it I'd (also) love the words 'dramatic pause', just because it's be funny. *g*

ANYWAY, just throwing it out there.

(Am watching channel 4 btw. 'Tis funny!)

Angel: "Well, I guess I kinda - worked it out. If there is no great glorious end to all this, if - nothing we do matters, - then all that matters is what we do. 'cause that's all there is. What we do, now, today. - I fought for so long. For redemption, for a reward - finally just to beat the other guy, but... I never got it."
Kate: "And now you do?"
Angel: "Not all of it. All I wanna do is help. I wanna help because - I don't think people should suffer, as they do. Because, if there is no bigger meaning, then the smallest act of kindness - is the greatest thing in the world."
Kate: "Yikes. It sounds like you had an epiphany."
Angel: "I keep saying that. But nobody's listening."

I'm not going to say anything about s8, except that THIS is the greatest thing EVER!

Well, maybe except for this. Watch, and be amazed!

Not a review )

Re. why Joss is writing this, then [livejournal.com profile] paratti has the best theory so far.
elisi: Edwin and Charles (Rambling (11) by dtissagirl)
Look what a lovely icon [livejournal.com profile] dtissagirl made for me! Have a feeling I'll be using it a lot...

Was supposed to *do* stuff today, but I swear I can not get anything done with husband + three kids around ALL THE TIME. (I love them. Dearly. But I might go insane.)

Anyway, was browsing amazon, and discovered that two of the items I've had on my wishlist were suddenly on sale, so bought them before I could think twice, and am now eagerly waiting for S4 of DW (70% off!!!) and Children of Earth (64% off!!!). \o/

Also tonight's gonna be a good night, because the girls are staying at their grandparents for a sleepover, and Darcy is taking me to the theater. Might still be insane, but at least I'll be happy. ;)

~~~
Have read a lot of reviews of #34, and really it's just awful on all levels. I mean, if you're going to do 'porn', make it either hot, or funny. Or both, like Torchwood did... THAT clip from Adrift under cut, because I love it to pieces )
elisi: Edwin and Charles (All!Penguin AU ftw by gillo)
A quick run through of a few fabulous things (I'm leaving out a ton of stuff I know. Sorry. It's late, I'm tired.):
Gorgeous Buffy picspam by [livejournal.com profile] molly_may.
The Plan, s8 mock fic by [livejournal.com profile] beer_good_foamy. (No liquids near keyboard!)
Excellent and NSFW(!!!) review of #34 by [livejournal.com profile] flake_sake.
But what made me squee even more was the fact that the Herald had a whole section devoted to Penguin Posts!!!! :D
~~~

Also, a Happy Happy Birthday to [livejournal.com profile] enigmaticblues, one of fandom's greats! Hope you have a brilliant day and that your Mr Wonderful spoils you rotten! :)
elisi: Edwin and Charles (Xacula by beer_good_foamy)
[livejournal.com profile] 2maggie2 has The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of #34. Happy Bangel!Boinking!Day y'all, and try not to despair. (It really is boinking day, btw. Joss appears to be doing Torchwood in reverse... Starting out with OMG!Awesome, and now ending up with 'Look! They're shagging! Wow, we're being really *adult* now! ::snicker::')

BUT! [livejournal.com profile] gabrielleabelle wrote 15 Reasons Why Buffy's My Homegirl, which made me cry and laugh! :)

And for the Whovians, I uploaded Hamlet's Speech: The End of Ten (.flv file, plays beautifully with VLC) if anyone wants it. :)

Happy Birthday [livejournal.com profile] sarahlynnl!

And Happy Belated Birthday to the inimitable [livejournal.com profile] rahirah!

Wishing you both the very, very best in the coming year! *hugs*

In *completely* different news (and really I ought to have made another post, but I'm a little rushed and don't want to spam your flists) today is (as Caroline so beautifully put it) Bangel!Boinking!Day, a term which I think puts the whole thing in perspective. *sniggers* (ETA: In case you're wondering, then every day is Spuffy!Boinking!Day. Ahem.)

Also I wanted to mention that I am delighted with the feminist rage that has been unleashed recently, but (being a cynic at heart, apparently) don't think it'll make a blind bit of difference to the story to be honest. However, according to this apparently in this issue the crack gets turned up to eleven. (Couldn't help myself!!!) Favourite quote [bolded bits my emphasis]:

What's interesting is that a lot of things get explained but I still don't have a clue what's going on or why. There are so many layers to this story and the scope is so big that, the more you know, the more you don't.

REALLY? Gosh, well I never!

OK, I'll go now.
elisi: Edwin and Charles (Xacula by beer_good_foamy)
Reading through the Sunday Times Culture magazine, I came across this review of Lloyd Webber's 'Love Never Dies' - his new sequel to The Phantom of the Opera... A few choice snippets for those of my flist who're feeling down:

The Phantom of the Opera is the biggest entertainment phenomenon in history [...] Now comes the non-awaited, sorry, long-awaited sequel, Love Never Dies, and its legions of passionate "phans" are incensed, seeing this as a cynical add-on to a timeless masterpiece.
[...]
Yes Christine really did love the Phantom, and Raoul turned out to be a cad. [cue examples] None of this villainy was remotely hinted at in Phantom. It's one of the many excruciating ways in which the original characters have had to be deformed to fit this childish and cheesy melodrama. (Babybelodrama, possibly.)
[...]
It's not only that this is implausible. The original Phantom, after all, featured a deformed genius who lived on a secret candlelit lake under the Paris Opera House, which hardly suggested the stern realism of Emile Zola. The trouble is, you have two completely different stories, ineptly yoked together and still audibly kicking and screaming in the traces.

Apparently it's been dubbed 'Paint Never Dries' by disgruntled fans. *g* At least we've only got badly drawn comic books to deal with, not some big screen abomination.
