Imposing meta upon a narrative...

Had a thought the other day, re. the current story lines in s8 and AtF. Spoilers for everything under the cut.

So, in s8 Angel has basically been turned into destiny's bitch. 'The prophecy says so, ergo I must do it!' Now from what I've been told, Spike's current storyline over in the Angel comic!verse is exactly the opposite: 'I'm gonna make the prophecies work for me!' - and is making destiny *his* bitch.

Now their actions don't make much any sense when compared to their deeply layered and complex canon counterparts, but it struck me as a rather nifty contrast.

Is it deliberate? Well, that's another question. I highly doubt it, although it would please me no end if Spike had got his prophecy-makers to un-write the whole Twilight nonsense. But I'm not holding my breath. Still... I'd like to think that the Spike story-line is a commentary on the nonsense of the latest s8 arc.

And here endeth the day's [not quite] meta.

I doubt that there's a planned connection; the two companies don't work together that closely, and Joss apparently has no input into IDW's current plans. But if IDW's writers have been following the Twilight storyline or even have been given some sneak advanced knowledge, it's possible they thought it would be nifty (and/or cheeky) to write a story for Spike that contrasted directly with the S8 one.

Then again, I suspect Joss is quite capable of using Spike's characterisation to contrast with Angel's himself, and that this will be a theme of the final arc of S8.

I had the same thought, actually, but I really think there's little chance of it. I'm thinking IDW Spike will have more of a hysterical, benny-hill-esque "my plans always go hysterically wonky" storyline out if his prophecy thing. :/

I think the theme you cite will still be there in S8, though, just not the direct tie-in. At one point, I actually had the dreaded thought that all of Twilight was Spike's idea in the first place, and it had already gone terribly wrong to make Buffy and Angel hook up. But no, no direct die-in is where I landed on that one, too.

I'm very bitter/pessimistic about how these writers view my Spike. (In case you couldn't tell) :D

Not to mention that if he did author the prophecy, Spike would be responsible for all those watchers that killed themselves in the 17th century, when they thought Twilight was imminent.

I do wish someone would do right by Spike (and Buffy...and God help me, Angel).

I'm not holding my breath either, but I love that idea!
