So, way back in autumn, Darcy asked me what I wanted for my 40th.

I said a new floor (preferably wooden!) for the dining room (as we have lived with The World's Ugliest Carpet ever since we moved in 10+ years ago). He did not like this answer, as that would mean A LOT OF WORK.

I said: fine, forget it.

However, after a while he decided that it was a good idea, and the floor has slowly become reality over the past months. He bought the wood, and tongue & grooved it, and eventually levelled the floor and laid the wood and then sanded it and waxed it. SO MUCH WORK.

But oh, it was worth it. This was what I came home to last Monday (the last image - he took pictures as he finished it):

So pretty... )
elisi: TARDIS in snow (Christmas TARDIS by daquien)
Icon is v. appropriate, as it is actually snowing right now!

Which is crazy, because it's been practically warm, recently. (Like... 12 degrees the other day? Celsius, obvs.)

Hope you all had/are having a lovely Christmas.

We spent yesterday with family (and watched Frozen - in-laws had never seen it), and spent today being supremely lazy and watched the Doctor Who Christmas Special (it was Doctor Who does Inception, but with Santa Claus and loveliness ♥ ♥ ♥), the LEGO movie, the 2nd & 3rd Harry Potter films (The Cherub got these for Christmas - as in, the whole box set with all the films), and now we're watching The Big Fat Quiz of the Year. (Mel B is on one of the teams - I always manage to forget just how Northern she is. As in, she might as well have 'Leeds Lass' tatooed on her forehead. Reminds me of some of Darcy's cousins. And... Well, lots of people generally. They dun't mak' 'em like that down South!)

Cut for present talk )

But I'll go back to the family & be sociable, just wanted to check in. Oh, and at some point [livejournal.com profile] the_redjay and I might post fic. Not just yet, but maybe around New Year. Like, a chapter-a-day fic. :)

Love,
Elisi

So, in... March, I think, we went to see Frozen. (We waited until it was on on a Saturday morning & cheap!) Afterwards Darcy said how he liked it very much, although it could have done to be a little longer & for Elsa to be fleshed out some more.

The Student Academy Awards (which took place last night) were presented by the writer, director & producer of Frozen. At the after party Darcy had a nice long chat with the producer (and director) about the difficulties of juggling a complex narrative & several main characters.

So yeah, life is crazy. (They won bronze in their category.)

(He also got them to sign a DVD for the girls, so they will probably collapse in flaily squee even more than they already have once they see it. In case I never mentioned it, they ADORE Frozen... It's Impish Girl's birthday a week on Thursday and one of her wishes is an Anna cosplay outfit. (She's not getting it, those things cost a FORTUNE! /o\) But she taught herself how to play 'Let It Go' on the piano from youtube tutorials - that song has been a constant in our house for months and months.)

He also spoke to Damian London (one of the founders of the Student Academy Awards), who played Virini on Babylon 5. Not sure if he got his signature also, but they had a lovely chat.

Overall, he said it was very glitzy & Hollywood and exactly how it is in the movies. Although underneath all the madness are just people who make movies. Which provides some sort of bridge I suppose, since our life is neither glitzy, nor Hollywood... (Nor would I want it to be.)

And that's all for now, my parents are visiting and I need to go be a good daughter, rather than anti-social LJ-er. :)

ETA: So - follow your dreams, reach for the stars or whatever other metaphor you like. Sometimes it works out! (Although it doesn't make you rich. *g*)

When a 16 second trailer makes you FAR too excited.

~~~
General note: Sorry I've not been around much, but a) Owls & Proton sucked me into the black hole of typology, and b) Darcy installed a new operating system on my Mac, but didn't update anything else - yet - so barely anything actually works. I could add c) Life is busy and I daren't even think about June/July. I've actually printed off a big calendar and will write everything on so I can keep track...)
OH! That reminds me. Border Patrol (Darcy's film that I linked to a month or two ago) won either gold, silver or bronze at The Student Academy Awards. So he's currently trying to gather money from here there and everywhere so he can go to LA at the start of June for the awards ceremony...
And as I don't even know how to process that yet, I'm just gonna leave that there. (Impish Girl wants Tony Stark, and has asked Darcy to bring him back for her if he sees him. *g*)
(If they've won gold the film will automatically be entered into the actual Oscars... *pokes reality*)
elisi: Edwin and Charles (Oncoming Storm by snowgrouse)
Darcy would like to go on the record to say that he predicts that the expected storm will mean a bit of wind and rain in one Welsh village.
If he turns out to be right, he wants to be able to say 'I told you so!' to the whole internet.
I have obliged, by writing this down...
In other news I have taken half-term off work and am blissfully relaxed.
For the past few years I've had an eMac, and - much as I've loved it - it's old and rickety and slow, and I've needed something new(er) for a long time...
So, as Darcy will be away on my birthday (a little over a week away), I got my present early! I am now the owner of a Mac Mini and a wide black monitor and all in all it's all very shiny and wonderful. Youtube vids will play properly and fannish vids are big and gorgeous. And (because Apple is a marvel) Darcy could basically just hook up the two machines and transfer everything. Every file, every bookmark - everything is exactly the same, except faster and bigger and better. This is definitely one of the Best Presents Ever!
<3
ETA: Knew there were things I was forgetting!
1) Watched Prometheus last night. It was... pretty much exactly like the Honest Trailer (major spoilers), but I'm happy to have seen it all the same. 'Twas very well made, even if it didn't make a lick of sense.
2) Watched Merlin tonight, which was Merlin and good entertainment. I'm not sure what the episode was called, but it COULD have been subtitled 'The Army of Shirtless Men'. It's not the reason I watch, but it's nice all the same. *g* Oh and I ADORED
Mordred. His ambiguity *really* worked for me, as did the actor.
14 years today. And OK, so sometimes he frustrates endlessly, but I'm still happier than I can say that I'm Mrs Darcy! ♥
ETA: Tossed the kids at the grandparents and went out and had a Chinese buffet (very nice), where we shared a bottle of wine, so replies to comments might be a while....
(Will do my best to post the meta, mind you. All the coding's done!)
Darcy had the day off yesterday, and since m-i-l offered to pick up children from school we went to Leeds for the day. Did some very leisurely shopping, had a lovely dinner at Cafe Rouge , and then went to see 'A Christmas Carol' (in 3D, natch). Unspoilery thoughts: Dickens would have LOVED it! A few more thoughts under the cut )
Anyway, I must run. Although I feel compelled to tell you to go fill out [livejournal.com profile] deird1's Multifandom apocalypse poll, because it is one of the funniest things I have EVER seen!
What with June being LGBT month in the US, thanks to Obama (pretty words good, but hopefully he'll actually *do* something soon), and so forth, I thought this video would be a nice tribute. It's clips from the peaceful march in San Diego on 26th of May 09, set to Adam Lambert's 'Mad World'. (Does anyone have an mp3 of that btw? I can suddenly see what all the fuss was about.)
Otherwise I have achieved a MIRACLE in the girls' bedroom (not done, but OMG so much better), since m-i-l was so kind as to let them all sleep over last night giving me lots of time. ALSO, Darcy and I went to the cinema and finally saw Star Trek!!!!! (I have no thoughts. I was never a Trek fan, but it was hugely enjoyable and I'd love to see it again. Will probably end up getting the DVD.)
Oh - and I never mentioned that whilst away last week [in Scotland, staying with s-i-l & her family] we went to the beach & Darcy totally lived up to his name, deciding that he needed a swim, but failed to remove his jeans first... (He did take off his shirt though. Still - very pretty and swoon-worthy, although what I said was : "Why did you do that, you idiot?" Thankfully it was so warm & sunny that he was half-dry by the time we went home...)
ETA: I posted Chapter 12 of My Immortal last week, in case someone missed it?
Changed my layout - v. pretty Christmassy stardust theme made by [livejournal.com profile] awmp (more here).
Today is Darcy's birthday, so won't be around much, if at all.
And of course [livejournal.com profile] girlpire has just posted the final part of 'Friday'. (I'll have to save it up... ::meeps::)
Not to mention that SA have sold LJ to a Russian company (?) - gotta say I didn't see that one coming. *shakes head*
Sorry - have to run. Have a nice day all of you!
Darcy got a new job!!!!!! *somersaults*
He's had his current job for about 3 years, and really doesn't like it - it's boring and stressful and he's been looking at different things for ages, but you know how it is. Except now that's all changed! The new job is a lot more challenging, but it's something he'll enjoy. The downside is that it's A LOT further away (driving distance 45mins instead of 5), but the pay is better... OMG we'll have money! Not like lots, but just maybe we won't keep going overdrawn! (Being poor *sucks*!)
Oh and I uploaded a new 'squee' icon... I had to delete my old one [moment of silence for Restless!Buffy's memory], but - I just couldn't resist. :D
Oh and there's of course also pretty news from Torchwood )
