RL has been busy...
So, way back in autumn, Darcy asked me what I wanted for my 40th.
I said a new floor (preferably wooden!) for the dining room (as we have lived with The World's Ugliest Carpet ever since we moved in 10+ years ago). He did not like this answer, as that would mean A LOT OF WORK.
I said: fine, forget it.
However, after a while he decided that it was a good idea, and the floor has slowly become reality over the past months. He bought the wood, and tongue & grooved it, and eventually levelled the floor and laid the wood and then sanded it and waxed it. SO MUCH WORK.
But oh, it was worth it. This was what I came home to last Monday (the last image - he took pictures as he finished it):

As he bought enough wood for the front room also, we will at some point get that done also. Ideally we'd also have decorated the dining room, as it sorely needs it - but hey, maybe we'll win the lottery one of these days.
But for now, this has been enough - I have spent all weekend just *cleaning* because there is dust EVERYWHERE. But oh, so worth it. <333
And that's the main reason I've not been around much.

I can hardly believe that it will soon be 2 years when we finally got vinyl put in instead of our carpet (which, after 10+ years and various accidents, was looking its age). Wood would have been even better but not possible in our apartment. We also didn't have to do the work ourselves but any kind of flooring change is very disruptive and involves packing and moving things. But besides the visual improvement it also finally got Mike in action on weeding out the massive clutter that had begun taking over our place. It's been a slow process but has allowed further changes such as our new TV and the window reading spot to happen.
Good luck with getting the front room done sooner than you think :)

He got terribly bored before he was finished (there was a lot of waiting for things to set/dry), but we got there! :D

I actually like the carpet, but I think the stuff that gets into it isn't doing my asthma any good(it's a very deep carpet)

Yes, you're probably right. And wood is very pretty...

We knew exactly what was under ours, as it had been coming up at the sides for years... (Ugh so ugly and tattered)
And no matter how much work it'll be, it will worth it! That floor is now my daily pride and joy. :D

I had carpet that was glued down in my apartment and it did not look good anymore after 10+ years. I got laminate now but it meant I had to empty all my furniture, it felt like moving, living with all those boxes! And some men disassembled it to empty the whole room.
Where did you keep all your stuff while he was working?

Yes, I don't feel very guilty. ;)
but it meant I had to empty all my furniture, it felt like moving, living with all those boxes!
Oh yes, we had cabinets & drawers & shelves (which we put in the front room) & the table & chairs (which were put in the kitchen), plus assorted other bits & pieces like all the photo albums...
Not looking forward to the front room, that will involve 3 floor-to-ceiling bookcases. /o\
I'm sure your floor was worth it too in the end, carpets do go nasty when they're too old.

Can you tell I spent my formative years watching too much This Old House with my parents? Well that and my grandfather did carpentry in his spare time and I used to hang out in his shop.
Enjoy your fab new floors.
