Seriously. How can they do this to me?

Captain Jack Harkness and Ianto Jones to reunite for new Torchwood [audio] adventure.

Called Broken, the new drama will be part of Big Finish’s second run of Torchwood audio stories, and is set during the first series of the cult BBC3 hit – specifically after an episode called Cyberwoman, which revealed Ianto’s girlfriend Lisa had been partially converted into a cyborg.

Later in the series the pair began a romantic relationship [...]

“Joe Lidster came up with the idea,” producer James Goss said of the new story.

“He'd spotted that something interesting happens midway through Series 1 of Torchwood on television*, and he really wanted to investigate it. I'm afraid to say I just went, 'Yes, yes yes. But John and Gareth together? Imagine how happy the fans will be!'
(More info if you follow the link above)

*NO SHIT SHERLOCK, IT'S ONLY *THE* MOST WRITTEN ABOUT PERIOD! (Except for maybe stopwatch fic.) But seriously, if I had a penny for every post-Cyberwoman story I've read...

That said, I WILL TOTALLY LISTEN TO THIS. *grabby hands* MAH SHIP!!!! MAH BEAUTIFUL SHIP COME BACK TO ME, DON'T BE DED!!! *cries*

So, when trying to think back on the new showrunner's previous work, one episode did of course stand out...

Now a cyber woman fighting a pterodactyl is probably the single most iconic moment of Torchwood, and as someone who likes my crack deep fried I rather adore it.

However, there is the question of the metal bikini, and at whose feet we shall lay that whole fiasco? Before decrying Chibnall as an evil sexist (have we been on this band wagon before? Why yes we have! If you are in charge of Doctor Who, it is self-evident that you hate women/all minority groups/anyone else you can think of) I thought I'd try to find out if the outfit was his idea, or if - like the case with Amy's skirt - it was something completely out of his hands. (Amy's short skirts were Karen Gillan's idea, and had nothing to do with Moffat.)

Via [livejournal.com profile] solitary_summer. This vid is incredible - beautifully edited, and utterly relentless (S1, 2 & CoE). Oh show, I loved you far, far too much, and I miss you still:

From here (download available). Vidder's summary:

Death, death and more death. The world is going to shit and the members of Torchwood are in the eye of the storm, struggling not only to stay alive but to keep from going completely insane in a nightmare world that often doesn't seem worth saving. Fighting aliens, fellow human beings, personal demons and even each other, their intentions are good but the results can be tragic, and with a far higher cost than anyone could imagine. Sometimes it feels like Torchwood destroys everything it touches. (January 17th, 2010)

OK, I am going to let this go, but my Star Wars comparison stayed with me and reminded me of something that happened years ago...

Spoilers for Revenge of the Sith, Miracle Day and Bad Wolf )

ETA: Just to give this post SOME content beyond grousing: Speculation on RTD's new project. Hilarious.

Still grumpy about MD, but am not going to write anything else, just point people towards these reviews, which are pretty much spot-on in how they mirror my feelings.

And finally... After MD was over, we channel hopped and came across NCIS, which contained the following scene (sorry about the poor quality). I swear, it was the most delightful breath of fresh air EVER:

ETA: Actually, I've often said that Joss and RTD are very, very similar, and never has this rung more true. If we take Children of Earth and Serenity as Big Proper Standalone Sci-Fi Projects, which were genuinely good and had a relevant message and were entertaining too, then at at the other end of the scale we have s8 and MD. Now s8 is undoubtedly worse than MD (at least everyone is in character in MD, and Strong Women aren't blamed for the world going to hell etc.), but then it's only a comic and no one outside the hardcore fandom even knows it exists. MD otoh was a big shiny production, so I expected significantly more. Not CoE levels of brilliance, but something that didn't remind me of s8 levels of stupid. (OK, going now. I HATE being negative, but damn. SO much wasted potential. I feel like this!)

Although, s8 is pretty impressive in its commitment to wtf-ness. MD's problem is that it took itself too seriously.

elisi: Edwin and Charles (Gwen pwns everything)
Bullet points because I'm too tired to write proper thoughts.

- *headdesk repeatedly*

- Gwen was awesome and Jack was pretty (and even had a good Jack-moment)

- (No headdesking over those points)

- So SLOW

- *headdesk repeatedly*

- So RIDICULOUS (and not in a good way)

- *headdesk repeatedly*

- HOW - considering that he INVENTED IT - can RTD NOT UNDERSTAND how Jack's immortality works???

- *headdesk so many times there's a dent in my head. And in my desk*

- At the end, Darcy and I agreed that it'd be more interesting if everyone had turned into doughnuts (apart from Jack - he'd be a cream puff).

- Miracle Day: The Whoniverse equivalent of the Star Wars prequels. And for the same reasons. (And yes, I know some people love them. I am sure there are good points, they - and MD - just didn't work for me.)

ETA: Personal canon: The crack ate Miracle Day.

I'd rather leave this to a later time, but I realised that it's Thursday and there'll be more tonight, so I better get this down.

First of all - this episode felt as if it was beamed in from a completely different show, something like 'The Life and Times of Captain Jack Harkness'. It still wasn't Torchwood, but at least it was interesting.

Spoilers and such )

Torchwood was always Jack's story. (And the story of Jack's people.)

Miracle Day isn't. It's just a story that happens to have Jack in it.

(He might be pivotal to events, but so far? It's not his story. Not even close. And hey, that's fair enough, it's Rusty's show, he can do what he wants. Although it does please me how (as always) I can see him as a mirror to Buffy: 'Oh, poor little lost girl boy. She He doesn't fit in anywhere. She's He's got no one to love.')
