First of all, I love this season for giving me something I’ve not had since BtVS and AtS went off air: A TV show not just rich, but so saturated with meta, layers, themes, parallels, foreshadowing, symbolism, mirroring, etc. etc. that I hardly know where to start. Hence the fact that this is a long, rambly and somewhat incoherent stab at three million different lines of thought. (Really, this might be the best look inside my head that you’ll ever get. It should come with a warning.) At some point I'll write something better, promise. For now, I just wanted this done.
Now it’s not that RTD doesn’t do meta, but it’s of a very different sort. SJA has metaphors so obvious they’re pretty much colour coded and Torchwood suffered from an overdose of crack and angst until ‘Children of Earth’ which - imho - moved it beyond TV and into the realm of art, which is an entirely different thing. His DW era hovered between these two extremes, and was thus a very different beast in meta-terms.
Also I need to put a disclaimer here. I’ve loved S5 like few things before, but when I point out that something or other is good, or that I like how something developed from the way it was before, this doesn’t mean that I all of a sudden dislike the Rusty era. It’s just that in many cases I love where we’ve ended up, and I like the fact that the Doctor has recovered from his traumas/is once more written more like he used to be (See this post). So no bashing please. (And this post of mine: My Doctor, explains how I feel about Ten Vs. Eleven.)
Oh and sorry about stuff being repeated. I’m too tired to make it more coherent.
( Endless spoilers for all of S5 of DW )

DW 5.12. The Pandorica Opens.
24 June 2010 09:55 amSo, before the episode aired, my thoughts were pretty much the same as
promethia_tenk’s, in
doctoreleven’s Official Squee Reaction Post:
RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER! RIVER!
And after the episode, my thoughts echoed this tweet by James Moran:
OMG TEH THING WITH THE THING AND THE THINGS AND WHEN THAT THING OMG TEH DOCTOR AND THING AND OMGGGGGG
(This started out as a review, then turned into meta and then became a love letter to Eleven... I don’t even know. It was late when I wrote it.)

DW 5.11. The Lodger.
16 June 2010 11:26 amFirst of all - I adored this episode to itty bitty tiny pieces. If you didn’t, that’s fine, but take your not-adoration elsewhere, pretty please? Because this ep was my Squishy, and I shall hug it and pet it and call it my Squishy, and whenever I am sad it shall cheer me up. (Only
adoxerella will get the ‘Squishy’ reference, but I thought it appropriate! *g*)
Also, just need to point out the hilarious awesomeness that is this icon. (Made by
dashafeather, post here.)

Ten’s hair had the wonderful quality of reflecting his state of mind (the more agitated he was, the madder the hair), but Eleven’s seems to have a mind of his own (much like the rest of his body - I ♥ Eleven’s gangly, awkward self thiiiiis much). :)
( Spoilers will frazzle you )

Hello! I am returned. :)
13 June 2010 09:15 pmWill catch up on my flist/answer comments tomorrow. For now, I just need to put down my reaction to this week's Doctor Who (The Lodger) which can pretty much be summed up as:
♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
(It was like seeing fic made real. It was the most fabulous, brilliant, ridiculous and joyful thing, and whenever I feel sad I shall sit down and watch it and it will cheer me up. Honestly, I could watch Eleven forever, just being his wonderful, bonkers, Eleven-y self! Matt Smith in this interview [ETA: youtube here] describes the Doctor as being 'completely, unconsciously himself, without any compromise', and that is it, perfectly. Did I mention about the ♥?)
Had a brilliant time in Scotland btw. Saturday was gorgeously sunny, and we managed a trip to the beach, a walk in the forest and my s-i-l's birthday party, all in one day! Have I mentioned how much I love my in-laws? For they are wonderful indeed! :)

DW 5.10. Vincent and the Doctor.
10 June 2010 12:09 pmFirst off all, some links. My two favourite 'reviews' that deal with the depression aspects are
This one by
lefaym and
This one by
copperbadge.
(I have no personal experience with depression, but my maternal grandmother was bi-polar and committed suicide when my mother was 15, so it's something I've been aware of for most of my life.)
And then
skipthedemon has some excellent meta, focusing mostly on the Doctor and how he's developed.
ETA:
curriejean has a beautiful vid: Happy for Deep People, focusing mostly Amy (and Amy/Rory and Amy/Vincent - and the Doctor, of course).
My own thoughts are somewhat random and rambly, but meta heavy rather than review-y.
( Spoilers are not invisible )
