This was written many months ago, back when I was collating my thoughts (or lack thereof) on S11. Am posting it now because [personal profile] sea_thoughts asked very nicely indeed, but please be aware that my head is full of Good Omens (it’s like a couple of seasons of Moffat Who crammed into six episodes, and it GLOWS with warmth and happiness and everything is beautiful and there are layeers upon layers and metaphors and mirrors and the fic is as fluffy as clouds...). This episode is the opposite of that and made me very cross. (Hence posting it flocked and it may be a long time before I reply to comments. We’ll see, I just wanted to warn you.)

So, what is Chibnall Who like, judged by its first season? Well, it’s nice. Fine, really. Bit pedestrian, with a few flashes of greatness and one massive clusterfuck. (Or, as some people have said, safe.) The thing is, if it hadn’t been for Kerblam! really pissing me off I might not be writing anything at all, because I have precious little to say. If this hadn’t been Doctor Who I’d probably just have drifted away the way I do when something doesn’t really capture me. Doesn’t mean it’s bad — lots of people have come back to the show, so it’s obviously working for others — just that it’s not what I’m looking for in a TV show. (What that something is, isn’t easy to pin down, so I shan’t try. *g*) Anyway, this is all very weird for me, cause I'm a Pollyanna and just being mostly meh isn't like me. :(

This post is just me going through the episodes, mostly just so I can point towards it and say ‘These are my thoughts on S11’. I sort of group the episodes together in my head, so will do them in groups (or individually) as necessary. More or less keeping to the order they appeared in, skipping Kerblam! since that one gets a whole section of its own.

So, tonight (at 7pm) we'll get the only Doctor Who of the whole of 2019.

I am trying very hard not to be negative, so here is a very positive review of The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos (and S11 in general).

However, when I started thinking about tonight's ep I figured the older girls will probably ask what happened in S11 (they only watched the first two episodes) and my answer will be: Nothing much, really.

Of course Doctor Who is by nature very accessible, you can hop on board pretty much anywhere, but the biggest development of S11 was Ryan calling Graham 'grandad'.

ETA: Knew I was forgetting something. My summary of S11:

S11Moral5

And to go with that, I bring you something silly. From the comments of a post about Resolution (even the link is spoilery! Don't hover over!), here is a 'Leaked script extract':

SPOILERS FOR VILLAIN )

It's possible there was something else I meant to say, but I am 3/4 of the way through a Fifth Doctor story and would like to see how it ends. :) (I am watching Classic Who backwards. I saw the movie years ago and most of Seven. I have now watched the rest of Seven, all of Six (♥) and have now started on Five. It's all been far more engaging than S11. (Go on Chibnall. Prove me wrong!)

TIBERIAN THOUGHTS – Sheffield Steel, or a Subjective Look at the Thirteenth Doctor #7: “Kerblam!”

This might be the most indepth take so so far. And the most... brutal, I think. The conclusion *burns*.

The thing is, I am easy to please. It takes a lot to genuinely offend me (when it comes to TV), and Kerblam! managed it.

In happier news, I watched 'The Twin Dilemma' this afternoon and it was DELIGHTFUL. <3 (Haters to the left.) All the love for Six. Gimme a Doctor who is arrogant, doesn't give a crap about niceties and is happy to destroy the bad guys, it's like balm to my soul. :D

(I am really REALLY hoping the S11 finale does something drastic. Otherwise I am going to seriously doubt my commitment to Sparkle Motion.)

Promethia found this wordpress. I have only started to poke around, but there are two sets of reviews - one lot delving into the meta, and another that's group reviews, with lots of fascinating insights:

https://downtime2017.wordpress.com/

They're all thoughtful and smart, without any of the 'I didn't like it, therefore it is rubbish' or 'Thank goodness Moffat's gone!' that you may get elsewhere.

If anyone is curious, here is a trailer for The Man Who Fell to Earth, the 1976 movie about an alien who fell to earth, starring David Bowie. As a title it’s a very clever pun, and thankfully the episode is nothing at all like the movie, except for the titular alien. (Not that it isn't a fascinating film, but um, not really suitable for children.)

But onto my thoughts, such as they are this early on.
