How far we've come...

OK, I am going to let this go, but my Star Wars comparison stayed with me and reminded me of something that happened years ago...

Before we start, I'd just like to point out how much I loved Gwen being the one to save the world. Her whole 'Yes you are going to let Esther die, because we are talking about THE WHOLE BLOODY WORLD here, and that's more important than one person' was made of pure win. Generally women on Torchwood are pretty brilliant, being people in their own right rather than just accessories to the men. Rusty gets full props for that.

ANYWAY.

Back when S1 of DW was airing, Darcy and I went to see Revenge of the Sith. My full review/post is here for anyone who might be interested, but I'll just pull out the relevant parts.

Speaking of hilariously bad, but also unintentionally funny, the scene where Darth Vader found out that Padme was dead has had me chuckling ever since I saw it. I mean: "Nooooooooooooo!"?????? If there could be a more cliched way of shooting that, I can't think of it. Just - fabulous. It'll make me laugh for years (which I'm sure I shouldn't, but - hey - I was reminded of anything from Principal Skinner to Andrew!). (And did Padme die of a broken heart? WTF?)

When we came home from the cinema, we realised that Dr Who was repeated at 10:55, so we happily sat down for some proper acting (and humour and angst!). Can I just say that I *love* Captain Jack? Because I do. He's just so utterly confident in himself and his abilities that I'm all won over. He's like a tall, handsome, charming Tom Cruise. (Sorry, but I never understood the fuss about Tom Cruise btw. Don't mean to offend anyone). And the way he flirts with everything that moves (including robots)? Priceless.

But of course the most wonderful scene was Rose's death. And The Doctors reaction. His face just killed me. I swear this is the closest anything has ever got to BtVS in terms of depth of feeling. And she turned to dust! I mean - *dust*!!! Oh, happy sigh. I never particularly wanted a Dr Who icon before, but now I want one. It has to be animated though - one shot of him picking up her dust, the other shot of his face. *sigh*

Now Doctor Who is still the same. The climax of The Girl Who Waited (to grab the nearest example) is all about the characters, without any kind of special effects, and it was heartbreaking.

But Miracle Day... the Big Final Sacrifice Thing with Rex and Jack was preposterous. Murray Gold's big, stirring score fell completely flat for me - it belonged in a show where I didn't snigger at what I was watching. It couldn't be more different from the ending of CoE which I only re-watched once (because Darcy was away when it was broadcast, so when he returned we watched it together) and which I still find difficult to process (brutal, but incredible). MD's finale actually reminds me a fair bit of the S1 finale with Abaddon stomping around in Cardiff and Jack SACRIFICING HIMSELF whilst eating ALL THE SCENERY, and it was daft and stupid and completely over the top and really quite affecting, because there was no way the people making it weren't aware how it came across.

Was I supposed to take MD seriously? I think I was. Although if it was all meant as a joke, I'd actually be fine with it. But all the Serious Points about the Monstrousness of Humanity makes me think that RTD wanted us to watch it with a straight face. And quite frankly, Turn Left was the same thing, but far far better. (It still had anvils, but I cared about the characters and Donna's sacrifice was incredible.) And that's my problem with MD - I didn't care, nor was I given any reason to. All I was left with was Gwen being awesome, Jack being pretty and a boatload full of stupid. It wasn't enough. And trust me, I'm easy to please. (I liked Tinkerbell!Doctor.)

Disabling comments, since I mostly wrote this for myself. Although if you want to talk, just go to one of the other posts.

ETA: Just to give this post SOME content beyond grousing: Speculation on RTD's new project. Hilarious.
