elisi: Crystal (Crystal)
Time just seems to vanish.

Last week was my birthday and I was totally going to make a birthday post, and then just... didn't.

So, belated thank you's to everyone who sent me birthday wishes. <3

And I got fanart from Lee (for my Seeker 'verse), which is very shiny. Not used to fanart. đŸ„°đŸ„°đŸ„°đŸ„°

Although speaking of fanart, then Promethia and I also had a stunning piece of fanart created for The Song of Rowland, so truly my cup currently overfloweth. (Technically the art work is spoilery, although not hugely.)

And fic-wise, then I posted Chapter 5 of Crystal Gets A Boyfriend on my birthday, and then Chapter 6 the week after! (This will probably never happen again. There is usually a month between any updates.)

But enough about me... Have a few links:

elisi: Oh SHOW. (Dead Boy Detectives)
Promethia and I finished our big Payneland fic!

rest-blessed-rest.jpeg
^the above image being an accurate representation of how we are currently feeling.

The Song of Rowland 23k, 2/2, Teen
Summary:

Most ghosts didn’t celebrate their birthdays.

But Charles Rowland wasn’t ‘most ghosts’.

Indeed, Charles’ birthday was a high point of the year, a guaranteed day of fun for himself and Edwin. The fun always helped to push down the unvoiced emotions below: the loss, the unresolved pain of his death, the feelings of failure and inadequacy. Charles saw no reason why this state of affairs shouldn’t continue forever.

But then he turned fifty.

Or:

How a medieval poem changed Charles’ afterlife forever.

If you like Dead Boy Detectives and you feel like a big fic visiting every ship cliché (and with a ton of meta under the surface, of course), please check it out! ^_^
elisi: Smile and the world smiles back (Charles)
How is it already Wednesday? /rhetorical question

On Saturday we watched the new Superman, and it is as delightful and uplifting as everyone promised. Also very silly, which is important I think. We need silliness to help ward off the horrors. ETA: It's already out on streaming, which made it a lot easier!

Promethia and I also posted the first chapter of a new Dead Boy Detectives fic:

The Song of Rowland, 10k

(Only 2 chapters in all, amazingly not everything I write turns into an endless WIP!)

I truly am terrible at posting updates. However I have been lost in fic-writing world (a nice place to hide from the horrors), and have actually managed to post something!

Crystal Gets A Boyfriend, Chapter 4: The Living Boy and the Dead Girl

Lalalalala, Dead Boy Detectives still rule my heart. 💜

~

And to keep this post full of nice things, I will add this music video as well. Recently Dimash's younger sister, Raushan, got married, and Dimash (and his brother Mansur) wrote and performed a song for her. This is the official music video, 'When My Swallow Built Her Nest':

It's such a pretty tune, and such a lovely video. <3

elisi: Edwin with book (Book Joy)
Promethia and I posted the final chapter of In the Sight of Angels (and Ghosts), our Good Omens/Dead Boy Detectives crossover. :)

Summary: The story of how Edwin Payne, Dead Boy Detective, met and befriended Aziraphale, Angel and Bookseller. And how that friendship flourished despite initial set-backs.
22k, 6/6

Also, if you wonder why AO3 was down the other day the explanation is better than you could ever hope for.

I posted Chapter 3 of my Crystal fic: Show and Tell
Just under 5k

Realised that it's been a month since chapter 2. /o\ Anyway, I'm having fun. Plz head over to AO3 & leave a kudos or a comment if you like it? <3

~

In other news then we started watching 'Only Murders in the Building' (since we got Disney+ anyway). This show is really rather good. Not in a fannish sense, just in a wildly entertaining and funny and well-written way. Recommended.
elisi: Crystal (Crystal)
Posted the second chapter of my Crystal fic:

Chapter 2: A Dramatic Morning with Detective Interruptions.

Would you believe it, but Crystal has a lot of unresolved issues...
elisi: Crystal (Crystal)
So, week before last (17-21 April) Darcy and I went to Barcelona on a mini-break - our first holiday without 'children' for 25 years... It was truly lovely, and Barcelona is so utterly gorgeous! (I hadn't been since I went there on a school trip when I was 18.) We went to both Park Guell and Sagrada Familia, the latter which is properly awe-inspiring.

And then we got home and I had to go back to work and just be a normal person again, instead of wandering through narrow European streets filled with tourist shops. Boo.

~

However I have managed to write fic (Dead Boy Detectives of course...). Chapter 1 of many:

Crystal Gets A Boyfriend

Summary:

“You okay?” a voice asked, and Crystal turned to find a boy next to her, looking at her with concern.

For a brief moment she wondered what it might be like to be the sort of girl who could let herself get chatted up by a cute boy. To be a regular seventeen year old who could have a fun little fling, maybe even indulge in the kind of fluffy relationship that you saw in teen dramas

Except she had never been that sort of girl. The last boy she had kissed had been a ghost. The one before that, a demon.

So yeah, the likelihood of a cute teen romance was basically nil.

~

OR: Crystal deserves good things, so I decided to give her a boyfriend. However, what started out as a single, fun idea became a sprawling story, delving into all her issues and then some
And she does get that teen romance, it’s just a bit more unusual.
elisi: Elrond agonising (from The Rings of Power) (Elrond)
The parents have been visiting for the past week (it was my mother's 75th on Sunday), so I have barely looked at the internet for... days.

I realised that I never posted here about posting Chapters 4 and 5 of In the Sight of Angels (and Ghosts), mine and [personal profile] promethia_tenk's Good Omens/Dead Boy Detectives cross-over.

(There were only supposed to be 5 chapters, but we split the last chapter because it became unwieldy...)
elisi: (Shiny! Kaylee by eyesthatslay)
I forget what I have mentioned, but I have been watching a few shows over the past months...

- The Rings of Power. Keep meaning to do a proper post about this (I'll get there). Worth watching, and does interesting things with the lore. I think my favourite thing was the Elrond/Durin friendship. <3

- Black Doves (Netflix). Fun, Christmassy spy thriller with Keira Knightly and Ben Whishaw (they're BFFs). 2nd season has been green-lit as far as I know. ETA: You should watch it! I think it was selenak who said that it could become a Christmas staple. :)

- KAOS (Netflix). Modern Day take on Greek Mythology with captive (and sometimes unexpected) story lines, incredibly inclusive casting, ridiculously queer, Jeff Goldblum as Zeus! (It was cancelled of course. Because we can't have nice things.) SO good. SO SO good.

~

I also wrote fic:

I Kissed A Cat And I liked It
Summary:

i met a scholar once who said that tragedies aren’t about a silly “flaw” or anything, it’s about having a hero who’s just in the wrong goddamn story

if hamlet swapped places with othello he wouldn’t be duped by any of iago’s shit, he’d sit down & have a good think & actually examine the facts before taking action. meanwhile in denmark, othello would have killed claudius before act 2 could even start. but instead nope, they’re both in situations where their greatest strengths are totally useless and now we’ve got all these bodies to bury.

(x)

Or: What if a very different 16 year old boy ended up in Port Townsend and met the Cat King?

Dead Boy Detectives fic, but crossed over with Doctor Who (specifically my own Seeker 'verse). Can be read with little to no knowledge of Doctor Who (or indeed my 'verse), but you must have watched at least the first two episodes of DBDA. (Why yes it's stupidly niche... Have you met me?)
elisi: my heart <3 (Light in the dark)
I also wrote fic. I had the idea literally a few days ago and basically wrote this over the weekend. Dead Boy Detectives of course, because they are relevant to everything. This one is... emotional. (Spoilers obvs. Go watch the show! <3)

We Will Remember Them
Words: 2,345
Summary: Charles wondered what it would be like knowing that war was your future. That as soon as you were old enough, you’d be shipped off to the Western Front to fight and probably get killed.

It seemed utterly outlandish, and yet this had been Edwin’s reality.

~

Or: Edwin’s first Remembrance Day and how he, in his own way, comes to terms with the legacy of the Great War.

In Save Dead Boy Detectives news, fandom has gotten a billboard. <3 <3 <3

I also keep forgetting to mention that Promethia & I are writing fic (just posted the 3rd chapter):

In the Sight of Angels (and Ghosts)
Summary: The story of how Edwin Payne, Dead Boy Detective, met and befriended Aziraphale, Angel and Bookseller. And how that friendship flourished despite initial set-backs.

I also wrote a Catwin oneshot: talk dirty to me, which is fic-of-fic...

No idea how many fans are on my flist (except for the 2 I already know of), but hey ho, here's why I am so absent. There is nothing like being in love with a show. 💜💜

~

Secondly, then I just came across the most AMAZING post on Tumblr, delving into 73 Yards, the latest Doctor Who episode. If you have seen it, you will know why you will want to read about what it all meant. (No really.) (I'm being very careful not to spoil anything, because it helps to go in blind! If you haven't watched yet, stay away from spoilers!)

~

Council of Geeks loved the episode (without any of the insights offered by the post above!) and has a video review here.

~

And in case anyone has ever wanted to watch the show in chronological order [of when the stories take place], then fandom has provided a google doc. :)

The End of Star Wars and the Rise of Dune; Archetypal Analysis

^This is really good. (With thanks to Proton <3) Is it depressing that the story we need right now is basically without the possibility of a happy ending (except in the far far distant future)? Yes. But also it feels necessary. The world is bleak. I want hope, but I also want realism. Naive fairy tales with a simplistic happily ever after are inadequate.

Also, the video digs into how the different 'verses look at the causes of evil, which is v interesting.
