Here is something for a Friday night:

My Way - Domingo x Carreras x Dimash x HAUSER | Virtuosos 2025

Someone in a comment on youtube said that Carreras and Domingo have never performed with another tenor since Pavarotti died. I have no idea if this is correct, however when trying to verify it I came across this article from 2017: CARRERAS AND DOMINGO VIRTUALLY RECREATED THE THREE TENORS' ATMOSPHERE WITH "MY WAY" AT THE ARENA DI VERONA. And to then use that specific song that with Dimash is clearly a huge honour. <3

I should probably also mention that to sing with them is literally Dimash's childhood dream, he had a VHS with The Three Tenors that he would watch, and that helped inspire him to become a singer.

Also, I doubt they had much time to rehearse - this performance was during The Virtuosos ('a classical music talent show with a unique format, focusing on discovering young classical talent and then giving the talented youngsters a chance to develop and progress in a way that few others have'), they'll all have been v busy. ^_^

David Tennant Does a Podcast With… Georgia Tennant
^This is actually a misnomer, because it's Georgia interviewing David. Just the loveliest people, it's difficult to overstate.

And then I recently came across this Will Young song, and it's my new favourite:

(It's a cover of a Bats for Lashes song, original here)

The song is from the album 'Crying on the Bathroom Floor', which is an album where he covered songs from female artists. "This is not a covers album as such, well certainly not in the standard way. I wanted to bring songs from female artists who I admire into a new arena."

I say 'new'... the video (mini-movie) was released 7 hours ago, but there is a recording of him singing it from 2017... (I posted that version back in 2021.) So he's been working on it for a long time.

When the music started I went 'Hang on, I know this!' The tune is very distinctive.

The song was created by an international team led by two-time Grammy Award-winning producer and composer Walter Afanasieff. It was written specifically for Dimash's unique voice by French songwriters Flavien Compagnon, Dominique Bourse, and lyricist Devon Graves.

ETA: Meant to add this yesterday, but was tired... He released a teaser a week ago, but it appears to actually be set after the story of the MV:

So, I fell into the rabbit hole of Kendrick Lamar's superbowl halftime show. (Disclaimer: I have never watched the superbowl - or the halftime show - ever before, and could not have named a single Lamar song before this. My interest is cultural rather than musical.)

That said, I have watched a number of Josh Johnson sets about the Lamar and Drake feud, so I had some background knowledge. However the performance itself turned out to be this dense and complex thing, full of symbolism, and well. That's my jam. ^_^

ETA: Outside the cut. Here is Josh Johnson talking about Kendrick, where he came from and why he does what he does. As always, starts as a fun set and then... digs into stuff far deeper than you would expect:

Videos under the cut )

Now the thing is that Kendrick Lamar is obviously coming from this from within his own culture, the struggle of his own community. And I think this is why it resonates? If you speak your own truth, others will recognise it.

And I think all of it ties in with this Black History Month thread about The Black Panthers.

Snippet:

To this day, if you find a white trades person over the age of 50, and ask them what "It's not race, it's class" means, many can tell you. If you ask them "Who is Fred Hampton" many can tell you. If you ask them what a "rainbow coalition" was, many can tell you.

Why does an old, white, union steel worker in Detroit know who Fred Hampton is?

I'm rubbish at updating, sorry. Not much has happened, but we are watching 'Ellis' - new detective show starring Sharon D Clarke, and it's properly good. Channel 5, but like, BBC production levels of writing & production.

We are also watching the new season of 'Shetland' - Darcy always loved the show, and I got caught up in the new season. The new female lead also really helps - the two main characters are now women. <3

(I have to suspend disbelief of course, because I have been to Shetland, and nothing ever happens - a stolen bicycle is front page news - but the look of it draws on all the 'British crime drama' vocabulary, so I can let it go. *g*)

ETA: Have a song by Zhou Shen. His voice is... out of this world.

I found an article. Have a snippet (lightly edited):

Zhou Shen sang the theme song "People Are _" for the movie "The Wandering Earth 2" in which human beings are not afraid of crisis, the spirit of facing fate, not being a trapped beast that is bound, not being a race that is easily defined, even if the light is faint, we still move forward.

ETA2: What the hell, have Big Fish as well. Because we all need beauty right now and this song is beauty that I wish to share with everyone.

Two videos of the same song - one a performance, the other a lyric video (because the lyrics are beautiful).

elisi: Dimash singing (Dimash)
A traditional Kazakh song, Eki Jiren. This recording is from 2016 and has three singers: Moldir Auyelbekova, Malika Smagulova and Dimash Kudaibergen. It's just the loveliest tune, I have been listening to it on repeat for days. Also he is baby (with terrible, terrible hair <3). He was like 21-22 when this was recorded.

I also came across a different version, which cuts out the first two singers and only keeps the last verse that Dimash sings, but then adds on a dombra solo. (Possibly Renat Gaisin, but the video of him playing that is used is from 'River of Love'.)

Oh the wonders of Friday evening with a G&T. <3

Dimash just released this new song, very mellow and autumn-y:

Dimash Qudaibergen - Ризамын тағдырға | Grateful to Fate (Mood Video)

From the blurb on youtube:

Dimash performed the song "Rizamyn Tagdyrga" ("Grateful to Fate") on October 15, 2024, at the Opening Ceremony of the Almaty Open ATP 250 tennis tournament in Almaty. The composition was written by Kaiyrgali Kozhanbaev with lyrics by Alua Zhaimambetova back in 1993. The song was first performed by Dimash's mentor, Marat Aitimov.

Apparently he and his friends filmed the video a few days ago in a local park.

And it made Sir Hairless cry! <3 (He is one of my favourite reactors.)

This one might be my favourite, it's just... an unusual structure? Not sure how else to describe it.

Glass Animals - It’s All So Incredibly Loud (Official Video)

And then this song is probably the most perfect Doctor/Master creation I have ever heard. Vidders, I'm begging you, do your thing.

Glass Animals :: Wonderful Nothing [Lyric Video]

Just look at the lyrics (and they just get better):

Wonderful nothing
You just want something nice
You just want substance
I just wanna cut out both your eyes
Wonderful nothing
You just want something kind
I want corruption
I think I'm the devil in disguise
Here's my state of mind
Give me destruction
Tell me I'm scrumptious
I'm a fucking delight

A Ten/Simm!Master vid plays in mind every time. <3
