I tried to find this hymn yesterday, but it's quite obscure. (It's the version by Peter Jones.) The best I've been able to do is this, which only contains the first verse. However it's so beautiful that I wanted to share:

The Reproaches (“O my people, what have I done to offend you so?”)

Funeral for transgendered person at pope's church.

(The article gets the pronouns wrong, but apparently the priest got it right during the service.)

Boy Wanders Onto Stage To Hang Out With Pope Francis. (Pope doesn’t seem to mind the company.)

ETA: Now there's a video: From BBC News!

A Big Heart Open to God.

This is very good. I'd pull out quotes, except I'd end up quoting the whole thing. And it 10,000+ words...

(Was at in-laws all of yesterday. Hence the lateness of this post.)

I also wanted to share this story: Catholic High School Allows Male Couple to Attend Dance.

And the BBC has a lovely Easter slideshow.

The pope's first press conference - NY Times here, BBC here.

If it continues like this...

Welcome Pope Francis

(A Jesuit from Argentina, who prefers the bus to a limo and chooses the name Francis... I am hopeful.)

At about the same time I found LJ, I came across this resource for Lent:

Praying Lent, an Online Ministry of Creighton University

(Catholic, but please don't let that put you off. <3)

I especially liked Beyond Giving Up Chocolate: Going Deeper in Lent.

ETA: DIY SOS is the perfect viewing... The level of generosity and kindness is just amazing. As is the commitment and love of the people they help, who have to carry burdens I can't imagine.

ETA2: Andrew Sullivan's Quote For Ash Wednesday.

I've yet to write about the Christmas Special. Partly because I've not quite got my head together, and partly because other people have contributed vast and wonderful metas that you should all read. I have assembled a list:

The Memory of Snow: The Snowmen. by [livejournal.com profile] lonewytch

The Frozen Mirror by [livejournal.com profile] janie_aire

Shameless speculation on Clara by [livejournal.com profile] 10littlebullets

Eyes Front, Soldier by [livejournal.com profile] janie_aire

And finally this one (title is spoilery) by [livejournal.com profile] ibishtar which goes into another side of things.

For now I mostly want to pull out this snippet, from the beginning of [livejournal.com profile] janie_aire first essay, because I think it's pretty spot-on, and very much how I see the show:

The first thing to keep in mind is the intent and purpose of Doctor Who at this point in time. I maintain that it's positioning itself as mythology. The functions of mythology are to supply the symbols that represent the collective psyche of a society, to transmit a set of values if not a philosophy pointing the way to a life lived well, and to identify the pitfalls and fantasies that get in the way of our wholeness, if not our happiness -- especially the problems posed by suffering and death.

Most of all, mythology permits a sideways communication between the conscious mind and the subconscious mind. Inscribed upon the Temple of Apollo in Delphi of Ancient Greece were two words: Know Thyself. In the current Revival, there is a question to answer: it's more easily recognized as "Doctor who?" but it is, in fact, "Who are you?" So this is what defines the show's current orientation.

Now this (to me) very much ties in with this amazing quote about the symbols used in religion and language:

Notes on Poetry and Religion

Hopefully at some point I'll manage to turn all this into writing, but for now, this is a glimpse into where my head's at. (My header also gives a good indication... *g*)

This.

Otis Moss, III Challenges Fellow Black Clergy On Marriage Equality For Gays And Lesbians.

Money quote:

The question I believe we should pose to our congregations is, “Should all Americans have the same civil rights?” This is a radically different question than the one you raised with the ministers, “Does the church have the right to perform or not perform certain religious rites.” There is difference between rights and rites. We should never misconstrue rights designed to protect diverse individuals in a pluralistic society versus religious rites designed by faith communities to communicate a theological or doctrinal perspective.

Read the whole thing, it's beautiful.

Somehow this perfectly captures Christianity. Even in the middle of the most mundane of ordinary life, there is joy and beauty. Because there is more than this. More than what we can see and touch. Beauty and joy and truth - these things are eternal. And so are we.

Happy Easter! (Again. *g*)
