So, I have 4 fics and two essays vying for attention in my head. This is rather tiring. So this morning I shall point you towards two good things, and chat a little about a third.

1) Short fic rec: How Xander Got Fired From That Phone Sex Line by gabrielleabelle. Hilarious!

2) Vid rec: Bachelorette by obsessive24. Absolutely *brilliant* vid looking at gender roles on Buffy.

3) Con reports. *flaily hands* kalichan and rm have notes from GDL's panels (One, Two and Three. Spoilers for COE obviously.)

Darn I wish I could go to these things:

GDL talking about the evolution of the Ianto/Jack relations. "Didn't know I was going to be the leading man's man until probably about episode 5 or 6." "Amazing, I'm going to be kissing the leading man, you have to give me more lines!"

Just a swift post to say that we'll soon be setting off for a few days at the seaside. (We have friends who have a cottage that we're borrowing.) Have a fun time without me - not that I'm around much anyway - and see you Friday or Saturday.

Hands Held High by erin_giles. Without a doubt the best gen Children of Earth vid I've come across! (Also, this is the CoE that I watched. I still can barely believe that my beloved, cracktastic show did that!)

Firstly, THIS FIC! (Title is spoilery.) It goes places I'd not thought possible, and does it without sentimentality, or any kind of fix-it. Incredible writing.

Second, THIS ESSAY. Children of Earth - Ethics, narrative structure, and [spoiler]. This is pretty much *exactly* the essay I would have written if I'd been able to get my thoughts into order.

And that's all for now. Summer holidays are TOO LONG!

I know I've not posted anything about Paris yet, and that I'm way behind on everything (if anything happened, do tell me), but this is just a truly wonderful and beautiful fic:

I am here, obviously, to tell you to watch ‘Children of Earth’.

Now part of me wants to just wave my arms and go “It’s AWESOME!” and witter on about the writing and directing and cinematography and acting (did you know JB can do subtle? Well he can. And how). Shiny show is SHINY!

Another part of me wants to talk about how this is pretty much a new show - how this is finally ‘Adult Doctor Who’. To quote kraken_wakes: The difference between DW and CoE is that in the former, it is the characters (most commonly, but not exclusively the Doctor) who are challenged on the issue of morality and ethics. In the latter, it is the audience. It's show not tell.

A third part wants to talk about the fabulousness of Jack/Ianto and Gwen/Rhys and the tiny little bits of crack they did leave in. *hearts*

But fourthly, because I *know* you, flist, my final attempt at getting you to watch this (even if it’s not your cup of tea) is... the women. This story is crammed full of real, fully realised and 3-dimensional women, all integral to the plot, all important in their own right. RTD could create a series 4 of Torchwood entirely from the women in CoE, if he wanted. (Bechdel Test? It *flies* through. Also, because this is the BBC, they look like actual, normal women, not toned actresses.)

In conclusion, this thing is awesome. And DARK. Really, really really dark. Harrowing even. But awesome. Watch it. (If you want to come yell at me once it’s finished, that’s fine. I can perfectly understand those who hated it.)

Someone ought to make a 'Children of Earth' vid to Jars of Clay's 'Hero'. (Song on Youtube here, lyrics here.) Don't you think? I was listening to it today, and it just suddenly hit me...
