This is spreading across LJ like wildfire:

Fox readying U.S. version of 'Torchwood'.

Mostly I just can't get my head around RTD + FOX...

(As long as they keep their grubby mitts off Doctor Who, I'm willing to sit back and see just *how* Fox'll deal with an omnisexual Time Agent. And how Rusty will deal with being told 'no'. Repeatedly. *passes popcorn round*)

ETA: Just forget all my theories. Torchwood USA is a contradiction in terms. Let's hope it all dies before it even begins.

There was an odd reference to a reboot of
Dr Who
for the American market - they probably don't get that DW is very much
NOT
RTD's property!

I really can't see it working - Fox would insist they remove all that nasty sexual ambiguity for starters. Oh well. It will be interesting to watch. From afar.

It's a train wreak waiting to happem. *ducks*

Did you miss this part?

[Jane]Tranter [another BBC vet, now exec VP programming and production at BBC Worldwide Prods. in the U.S.] might try to reboot “Doctor Who” for U.S. audiences while departing “Doctor Who” star David Tennant stars in NBC’s pilot “Rex Is Not Your Lawyer.”

Whatever. If they do try either one, they'll no doubt be canceled after 3 episodes anyway. *g*

Actually, I was referring to your comment about them keeping their mitts off DW, and the statement in the article that Jane Tranter wants to "reboot" that in the US as well. I don't know why DT's name is even mentioned as it has nothing to do with the rest of the sentence. Who edits these articles, anyway?

I hope DT's show does well - I'll certainly check it out.

Pretty much that. I can't imagine how this would not result in Jack having to take a sharp 180 degree turn towards the heterosexual side of omnisexual. Not counting Battlestar Galactica, because that's kind of like Dumbledore, is there even an USian SF show with a gay male character, however minor?

And I'm not sure if I want a Torchwood that isn't British...

[identity profile] solitary-summer.livejournal.com 2010-01-19 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'll watch it. But I think I'd prefer either a whole new cast, or, like you said, a future setting.

Ironically some of the reactions out of the former TW fandom corner make me suddenly a lot more inclined to like it. *still fuming*

Fox is an EVIL entity and most everything they touch turns to ashes. I wouldn't expect this to work at all. I love me some TW, but would refuse to watch an Americanized version. I swear, at least 3/4 of the reason the show works is because it is British. British tv is so different from US tv. US tv plays down to the lowest common denominator and ruins a good storyline much more often than not.

I've read something about it (some days ago?), didn't think it was new. I've got a German link today, added your English one to it.
I thought they would make a new season, not a new pilot. *is a bit confused*

The very idea of this and an American version of Being Human is making the Baby Jesus weep. I just cannot imagine Captain Jack being told that he can't make out with hot guys.

really? Fox? a network that's pretty much become notorious for canceling shows early on? I give it 6 episodes.

Really, I see TW working much better on a cable network like FX or something. Fox is gonna have issues with the whole omnisexual bit, plus a ton of other stuff. It'll be way too restrictive here in the US.

Sheez. Given that FOX had problems with sexuality in Joss' Dollhouse, I can't imagine it's going to be anything near the same. Given the hodgepodge of access to cable networks in the U.S. there are certainly many people who couldn't see the original versions on BBC America. But still, why not just rebroadcast them on SyFy?

[identity profile] adoxerella.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
I am much afeared about the numerous ways Fox can screw up Torchwood.

As a network, they seem to afraid to take the chances needed to get a sci-fi show started (i.e. letting the writers write without interference, and giving the show time to develop an audience, allowing actors and writers to take chances). Plus the network is so notoriously conservative that a lot of the basic tenants of the 'Whoniverse' won't fly, even if you take out our favorite intergalactic man-whore.

I think the estimate of 6 episodes is optimistic, and predict Fox won't pick it up once they see the pilot.

[identity profile] adoxerella.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I did manage to think of one possible advantage of them shooting Torchwood over here. See we've go the out of work actor over here who just happened to play opposite JB before.

And I don't have an appropriate icon.

[identity profile] adoxerella.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, see we already know JB and JM can do they eye@!#$ like there is no tomorrow. With RTD writing them, they might manage to give the censors a fit. Imagine the conversations.

Fox censors: We keep telling you not to do the gay stuff.
RTD: Buh?
Fox: That scene in the hub.
RTD: They were arguing.
JM: You know they used to say the same thing when Dave and I used to get in fights on Angel. Or when Mike and I had scenes together on Smallville. Don't know where they got that idea from.
JB: *does a horrible job of looking innocent*

But they already found Torchwood 4 - it was the one in India.

I am so horrified by the idea of an American Torchwood I'm just sticking my fingers in my ears and going lah lah lah.

[identity profile] kateydidnt.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
"ETA: I KNOW! Torchwood 4 (the one that's missing, remember?) will turn up in America! ::feels clever:: (It was the one in India. I am stoopid.)"

Actually from everything I have seen, Torchwood 4 is distinct from Torchwood India. Especially since Jack helped shut down Torchwood India, and of Torchwood four he says it is lost but they'll find it someday. From that I don't see how they can be the same.

Though, my pet theory is that Torchwood Four was/is in Ireland. The reason being, Torchwood 1 is in Britain, 2 is in Scotland, 3 is in Wales, that leaves 4 for Ireland.

This can never happen! (US TW)

[identity profile] buffyprof.livejournal.com 2010-01-29 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Unless cable. I know why Joss bothered with the network (Eliza) but I don't know why anyone else interested in sexuality would.
