...
This is spreading across LJ like wildfire:
Fox readying U.S. version of 'Torchwood'.
Mostly I just can't get my head around RTD + FOX...
(As long as they keep their grubby mitts off Doctor Who, I'm willing to sit back and see just *how* Fox'll deal with an omnisexual Time Agent. And how Rusty will deal with being told 'no'. Repeatedly. *passes popcorn round*)
ETA: Just forget all my theories. Torchwood USA is a contradiction in terms. Let's hope it all dies before it even begins.

I really can't see it working - Fox would insist they remove all that nasty sexual ambiguity for starters. Oh well. It will be interesting to watch. From afar.

You know, RTD and DT joked about this in a podcast/interview/similar thing, where RTD said something about people saying they wanted him to make an American DW, and DT saying 'Hey! I can do an American accent!' And then they laughed a lot. :)

Yup. And if it goes completely belly-up, CoE always felt like a very proper ending!

[Jane]Tranter [another BBC vet, now exec VP programming and production at BBC Worldwide Prods. in the U.S.] might try to reboot “Doctor Who” for U.S. audiences while departing “Doctor Who” star David Tennant stars in NBC’s pilot “Rex Is Not Your Lawyer.”
Whatever. If they do try either one, they'll no doubt be canceled after 3 episodes anyway. *g*

I hope DT's show does well - I'll certainly check it out.

You know, RTD and DT actually talked about this in a podcast or something - the fact that RTD had been approached about making a US version of DW. And then DT said "Oooh, I can do an American accent!" And then they both laughed uproariously!

Well checking out DT is hardly a chore, is it now. ;)

Pretty much that. I can't imagine how this would not result in Jack having to take a sharp 180 degree turn towards the heterosexual side of omnisexual. Not counting Battlestar Galactica, because that's kind of like Dumbledore, is there even an USian SF show with a gay male character, however minor?
And I'm not sure if I want a Torchwood that isn't British...

It'll be interesting to see if RTD is as flexible as Joss...

Don't ask me. Of course there is Kirk/Spock, but that's just all subtexty. And RTD doesn't really do subtext. *g*
And I'm not sure if I want a Torchwood that isn't British...
As I said in another reply, this is where the finality of CoE is very handy. I'd be curious about a non-British TW. Not sure I'd *like* it, but if not, nevermind. Maybe it'll be set in the future?

Ironically some of the reactions out of the former TW fandom corner make me suddenly a lot more inclined to like it. *still fuming*

That's be nice. Not that I'd mind Jack being there, to be honest, because he can make the leap - presuming they don't tone him down.

Yeah, this is why I stay the hell away!

Not sure how RTD thinks he'll fare, considering how they treated Joss, but hey - it's his funeral. He might come running back home and kiss the ground! *g*

I thought they would make a new season, not a new pilot. *is a bit confused*

I read something about possibly having American actors in it, but it was all very maybe-possibly-we-don't-know - having it produced by FOX is something entirely different!
I thought they would make a new season, not a new pilot. *is a bit confused*
I think *everyone* is confused right now...

I am blocking out the Being Human thing. Does not compute!
I just cannot imagine Captain Jack being told that he can't make out with hot guys.
Same here. And I'm sure JB would walk out in disgust! ;)

Really, I see TW working much better on a cable network like FX or something. Fox is gonna have issues with the whole omnisexual bit, plus a ton of other stuff. It'll be way too restrictive here in the US.

Yeah. WHO gave Rusty some Kool-Aid to drink?

*nods* Cable networks make good TV!

Also it is evil... *g*

yeah, riiiiiight. And it'll be just like the British TW. :-\

It will all end in tears, mark my words! (RTD always wanted to be Joss I think. He could have taken a less painful road though.)

I know, it's hysterical. I can just imagine it:
RTD: "So - I was thinking that Jack'd show up with Alonso and Capt John..."
Fox: "His partners."
RTD: "Oh absolutely. A little three-some thing going on there, I thought that'd be nice."
Fox: "Argh!"
RTD: "Why have you gone that colour?"
But still, why not just rebroadcast them on SyFy?
Guess you've not made it in America until you've been screwed by Fox...

As a network, they seem to afraid to take the chances needed to get a sci-fi show started (i.e. letting the writers write without interference, and giving the show time to develop an audience, allowing actors and writers to take chances). Plus the network is so notoriously conservative that a lot of the basic tenants of the 'Whoniverse' won't fly, even if you take out our favorite intergalactic man-whore.
I think the estimate of 6 episodes is optimistic, and predict Fox won't pick it up once they see the pilot.

The list is endless... And as you say, they are way, way too conservative and interfering. ("You're not in Wales anymore...")

Yeah. But RTD obviously wants the genuine Hollywood experience.

And I don't have an appropriate icon.

Fox censors: We keep telling you not to do the gay stuff.
RTD: Buh?
Fox: That scene in the hub.
RTD: They were arguing.
JM: You know they used to say the same thing when Dave and I used to get in fights on Angel. Or when Mike and I had scenes together on Smallville. Don't know where they got that idea from.
JB: *does a horrible job of looking innocent*

Not to mention the nudity... And the innuendos... And the flirting... And the sexy aliens...
*hugs crack-tastic Torchwood tightly*

I am so horrified by the idea of an American Torchwood I'm just sticking my fingers in my ears and going lah lah lah.

*headdesk* You are so right!

It will never work! RTD will get screwed, just like Joss has been, and then he'll go do something else.

Actually from everything I have seen, Torchwood 4 is distinct from Torchwood India. Especially since Jack helped shut down Torchwood India, and of Torchwood four he says it is lost but they'll find it someday. From that I don't see how they can be the same.
Though, my pet theory is that Torchwood Four was/is in Ireland. The reason being, Torchwood 1 is in Britain, 2 is in Scotland, 3 is in Wales, that leaves 4 for Ireland.

Yeah, this has been pointed out to me elsewhere. I ought to edit the post really.

*Northern* Ireland. But yes, that's a good theory. And Torchwood USA is a contradiction in terms. Personally I think it could work if it was set in the future. And there could be lots of Time Agents! :)
This can never happen! (US TW)
Re: This can never happen! (US TW)
*shakes head* It's bizarre. Ah well, popcorn is nice...
