I just can't stand seeing the characters abused that way. There is something to be said for the thoroughness with which they're making sure that no one gets away unscathed.
Superman gets stoned on silver cryptonite is a recent favorite. It had no bearing on the rest of the storyline of that arc. It was fabulous. Wow. Sounds brilliant! :)
And I hope you enjoy A:AtF when you get there. I thought it was brilliant (except for most of the artwork).
