Jack was *omnisexual* which is... a somewhat wider umbrella. Also he was only the companion for a short while. (Of course on Torchwood NO ONE was straight, but that's a whole different ballgame. *g*)
I think this is different because it's very straightforward, simple representation. :)
ETA: Also we have of course had Jenny & Vastra as happily married [inter-species] lesbians and both River & Clara were bi (River possible pan or omni or whatever)... So you know, plenty of representation, but this still feels quite different.
So this guarantees that the next Doctor will be a woman JUST so people can ship them :P I'M KIDDING!!!!!!! (sorta...my first thought was "hurray, they won't be trying to make her flirt with him all the time" and then that was my second thought...)
Apparently it's 'revealed' pretty much straight away, not some sort of convoluted 'Well, she seems to have a lot of chemistry with all the girls' and then it's confirmed after ten episodes of speculation. :)
Hi! Mind if I friend you? I'm a late-into-the-fandom Doctor Who and Torchwood fan, and while I'm still awfully behind in that I've only started watching Eleventh Doctor era, I'm so super-excited about Bill that I'm going to start watching the new series as soon as it airs. I would love to have more fans on my friends list and looks like we share a lot of interests and such. I remember looking at your journal before, but back then I was even more woefully behind on the show than I am now, so I figured I'd get back later. :-)

It should also be noted that this is a big deal because Bill is a gay woman of colour. That's an unprecedented amount of forward movement for Who tbh.

And yes, it's all happening! :D
