This does seem a bit different. Jenny, Vastra and Jack are all definitely queer but were not full time companions. Clara was full time, but they never (AFAIK) showed her in a relationship with another woman. This. And Clara's f/f relationship was apparently with Jane Austen - which was a delightful touch, but all off-screen.
(Obviously she'll still be queer regardless of whether or not she's in any sort of relationship, but from a representation/visibility perspective I would like to see that.) Same here. And Clara got an immortal girlfriend and a TARDIS, so hopefully Bill will get a happy ending too. :)
Anyway, props to Moffat for this, and for his efforts in laying ground for a female Doctor. It's not up to him to cast Thirteen, but here's to hoping Chibnall picks up the torch!!
