What I am watching tonight...

HappyPoldarkDay

Poldark returns from the American War of Independence to his beloved Cornwall to find his world in ruins: his father dead, his house wrecked and his sweetheart engaged.

I'm generally not one for historical dramas. But. I shall be watching this one, for the almost same reasons I watched Casanova (David Tennant) and The Devil's Whore (John Simm). In this case, it's Aidan Turner...

More info here.

Tonight, BBC1, 9pm. :) (And oh, is my mood theme ever appropriate or what?)

ETA: I had never heard of Poldark until Friday, when work colleagues brought it up. So I have no baggage. It's v. interesting to hear all the stories of people loving the original.

Hehe! I'd say that is as good a reason as any ;) Who knows, you might learn something. Oh the things I have watched! Shark Attack III because of one John Barrowman, or Chainsaw Massacre because of one Matt Bomer...

And Casanova was awesome! I really liked it. I even started to read his biography (12 books!) afterwards, to find out which things were real and which were made up. Turns out, the lottery was real! So, I learnt something.

He is also kinda attached to my homecity Dresden, he has been here and his brother was a professor at the art academy and is buried at a cemetary here, and his mother was a singer at our opera.

Is this like a British thing of which I am not aware?

LOL - I might not be watching because I loved the original.

I'm very torn - he is sooooo pretty, but I loved original Poldark, and I know I'm going to be comparing the new Demelza and Elizabeth and Warleggan to the 70s versions.

But it does look stunning from the trailers, and Aiden Turner is always worth watching, so I'll probably record it to watch later in the week. Tonight at 9.00 is Darts for Comic Relief (I don't even watch darts, but somehow seem to have watched all 6 games on catch up over the weekend!!).

Enjoy your Poldark :)

The 70s version was quite good - I remember watching it with my mother, she adored it and the actor portraying Poldark. Interesting they've decided to remake it.

This would explain the sudden requests for Poldark novels in the bookshop..

I'm so torn; it looks very pretty & there are reasons for re-dramatising it, but a bit of my heart is breaking because who needs anyone other than Robin Ellis and Angharad Rees in those roles?

(If you need a place to squee, mind, there's [livejournal.com profile] poldarks.) :-)

I grew up reading Poldark, but only saw (some of) the 70s series recently, when I was absolutely old enough to think 'that's not quite how I imagined it' and 'oh it's really quite dated now, that's a shame'. So I'm a bit overexcited about tonight (although the look on Mr Bloke's face already says 'I love you, but that's what iPlayer is for' ;)

Mmmm. Aidan Turner...could make a very nice Ross Poldark! Not sure about the new Demelza though. Now you've got me trying to remember who played the doctor in the old version - I totally had the hots for him!

Like [livejournal.com profile] bogwitch's mother, I was obsessed with Poldark back in the late 70s, early 80s when it hit this side of the pond via PBS.

I can't watch the new one, as I really can't go through all that drama again - and unfortunately, it's really hard for me to imagine anyone other than angharad reese as demelza. (Though, truth to tell, despite how well Robin Ellis played Poldark, I can imagine someone else playing the part.)

I used to have a poldark otp icon; if I can dig it up, I'll come back and post it here. You can have it, if you'd like.

See icon. Snag icon. Have icon. :-)

I can remember the original - although I was not an avid fan. I really can see Aidan Turner as Ross though - and plan to give it a try.

Although as S2C is watching one lot of darts and recording another, my plan is to watch it on the TV on the iPlayer tomorrow so I can see it on the proper sized screen.

Due to the memories of the original series I can read anything anyone says about it in the meantime as I can't really be spoilered!

I've watched a lot of things because Fav!Actor (hell, I've watched things on a regular and got surprise!Actor and been thrilled to pieces). There are definitely worse things you could watch to get a marvelous actor. Case in point, Betty White, Lake Placid...(btw, she practically the only one worth watching that travesty for).

The bonus of being born in the 80s - never saw the original, have no baggage. Doubt that anyone who did see the original will like this, but oh well!

Just wanted to say that I watched this now! I also have never heard of it before, don't know the original, so it is all new for me. Interesting start! If I had to guess I'd say he'll fall in love with the girl ;)
