Made this little graphic for Mark Watches, and thought I might as well post it here too, because the juxtaposition is rather beautiful. (Apologies for aspect ratio fail, this is not my fault, and I couldn't be bothered to work out a way to fix it.)
I HATE the second part of Buffy's Season Two (NOT REALLY. IT'S AN AMAZING STORY-ARC.) Buffy suffers so much! ç___ç I hated the fact that the things she tries to free herself from Angelus are vain, like in Passion: she closes the door but he can still hurt her by killing Jenny. Aaaahhh! I hate it! Hate it! I read Mark Watches' posts about Season Five and I think that they are really nice. In "Crush", Spike absolutely deserves a smack down. ù_ù
When reading Mark Watches? Keep in mind that the poor dear was spoiled on one thing - while reviewing the Twilight books, he was told that Spike raped Buffy, but not when, why or how. (Also apparently not told that it was attempted rape not "rape", nor was he told what happened next.) So he's basically waiting for the rape...and has been watching each episode with that in the back of his mind.
It's bound to color his view of Intervention. [Sigh. He's so unprepared for the Willow/Tara angst/fall-out that occurs in Seeing Red, which is bound to bug him more.)
Keep in mind that the poor dear was spoiled on one thing - while reviewing the Twilight books, he was told that Spike raped Buffy, but not when, why or how. This is certainly not of the good. Although whilst it'll certainly colour his view, otoh it'll be interesting to see how he reacts to the thing itself. I remember talking to someone [on LJ] whose first experience of BtVS was Seeing Red, not knowing anything about the show. And she was deeply intrigued by Spike...
Although I suspect you're right - Tara/Willow will probably overshadow things. Which could be good. I mean, if that's where his anger gets directed. (Apparently Tara's death still haunts Joss!)
Except, keep in mind..Mark's background. He's had abusive boyfriends and stalkers. So he'll possibly react to both episodes differently than someone who hasn't had this experience. ie. I could be wrong about this, but it appears Spike much like Xander did in S1-2, triggers Mark.
It'll be interesting to see where he falls in the Spuffy stakes in S6... Will he identify with Buffy and her depression, or with Spike and the way he gets used? Mmmmm S6.
I don't think he hates Spike, but the show is hammering home how disturbing soulless vampire love is, and where the show goes, Mark follows. Just wait for Intervention.
Also look how much he likes Xander at the moment, when Xander is inherently likeable. Just watch him swing back round in S6 he becomes a jerk again...
(This is part of the reason I can't read his Moffat era Who reviews. He likes complexity, but can't see the layers, and I quite simply can't understand someone who can't see layers. I can cope with Buffy, but it requires patience.)
ANYWAY - HELLO YOU! Where have you been hiding? *many hugs*
Actually, it reminded me of how bad Angelus was. ;-) I meant more generally... Mark falls prey to it completely. I mean: He judges Spike by human standards. (But then so does Buffy... Which is what makes him so fascinating. He might be a monster, but he's so very human.)
Although I definitely know what you mean, and that's what at the heart of my my sudden need to match up the caps - Angelus is angry about being shut out, yet (as you say) confident that he'll still be able to hurt her. Whereas Spike's focus is making Buffy like him, and this with one fell swoop destroys years worth of unspoken trust... BLESS HIM! *hugs Spike*

And yeah, Mark is lovely. Bit predictable, but he gets the basics right. ;)

Spike has remorse and pain on his face.
Angelus has confidence and a sort fiendish smile on his.
