Made this little graphic for Mark Watches, and thought I might as well post it here too, because the juxtaposition is rather beautiful. (Apologies for aspect ratio fail, this is not my fault, and I couldn't be bothered to work out a way to fix it.)
Except, keep in mind..Mark's background. He's had abusive boyfriends and stalkers. So he'll possibly react to both episodes differently than someone who hasn't had this experience. ie. I could be wrong about this, but it appears Spike much like Xander did in S1-2, triggers Mark.
It'll be interesting to see where he falls in the Spuffy stakes in S6... Will he identify with Buffy and her depression, or with Spike and the way he gets used? Mmmmm S6.
I don't think he hates Spike, but the show is hammering home how disturbing soulless vampire love is, and where the show goes, Mark follows. Just wait for Intervention.
Also look how much he likes Xander at the moment, when Xander is inherently likeable. Just watch him swing back round in S6 he becomes a jerk again...
(This is part of the reason I can't read his Moffat era Who reviews. He likes complexity, but can't see the layers, and I quite simply can't understand someone who can't see layers. I can cope with Buffy, but it requires patience.)
