How is that POSSIBLE?
I mean, I grew up without a TV, and even I had seen a fair few by the time I left home.

The original ones are worth your while.

Banter. You like banter? Han/Leia is the gold standard by which I judge all shippy banter.

I'm intrigued

I'm convinced half the reason the prequels suck is that they don't have any of their snipping. All the joy and humor is GONE.

Tell me you've seen Indiana Jones.

How can a River fan never have seen any James Bond, Star Wars, OR Indiana Jones??!?! This is like a fan of living having never experienced oxygen.
*rocks some more*

As a kid I was too busy watching Watership Down and Allegro Non Troppo to keep up with the cool kids.

Right. We can fix this. I shall reapply myself to watching Press Gang and you shall take a crash course in River Song antecedents. I'd say take a taste of all three so you at least know what each is about and then you can decide if you want to go any deeper.
James Bond: Casino Royale (a bit unusual for a Bond film in that it's an origins story, but the whole feel and attitude of it is exactly right)
Star Wars: Episode IV, A New Hope (River's Pandorica/Big Bang outfit is a hybrid of Han and Leia's styles in the SW movies, so say the costume designers.)
Indiana Jones: The Last Crusade (technically the last of the original trilogy, but it's by far the best and you'll catch on fine)
As a kid I was too busy watching Watership Down and Allegro Non Troppo to keep up with the cool kids.
Well, I'm not sure if they're any of them "cool" per se. They are OTT campy pop culture, though, and that's far more fun *nod* That Italian thing sounds interesting, though (googled).

Allegro Non Troppo is wonderful, it's basically Fantasia [which is itself amazing] but with the added bonus of social commentary and some really moving scenes.
Watership Down is... bunny rabbits living in a brutal communist-style dictatorship. Like Animal Farm. But bloodier and scarier. Excellent movie to inflict on someone's childhood.

I'll admit I have mixed feelings on Fantasia (I get bored in parts *shrug*), but I may give that a shot--Wikipedia said it bordered on parody?

Lol! I had to read the book in middle school and hated it. Did make for some entertaining complaining, though, and I'll admit that's worth a lot to me.

ETA: Oh, and I was just this morning thinking that there needs to be a River vid to 'Tomorrow Never Dies'! ('Darling I'm killed...')
*goes looking round youtube*
ETA2: NOTHING! D:

That would be AWESOME! (I love her stuff SO MUCH!)
Although maybe you should wait until S6 starts and we'll have more footage. *is canny*

Oh, and I was just this morning thinking that there needs to be a River vid to 'Tomorrow Never Dies'! ('Darling I'm killed...')
'How you tease, how you leave me to burn . . .' with, say, a shot of the TARDIS exploding? Oh yes! You could probably make a decent River vid out of most of the Bond songs, come to think of it.
Like "Live and Let Die"?
Heck, the song from Casino Royale is called "You Know My Name"! And includes the line "I've seen angels fall from blinding heights / But you yourself are nothing so divine . . ."
ETA2: NOTHING! D:
Wow, vidders. Wow. At least there's the "World is Not Enough" one and the "Nobody Does It Better" one. Surely sooner or later people will catch on, and we can have a whole collection. Perhaps come the new season.

Ok, for the purposes of cultural literacy you mostly just need to know the James Bond cliches, which I think are embedded in people's brains at birth anymore. Most of the franchise is just campy fun and explosions and you could watch a handful of them and get what it's all about. But, seriously, Casino Royale . . . *guh*
Go! Watch! It transcends its action movie origins. The jump in quality from earlier stuff is astounding. I would seriously consider putting it on my list of top ten favorite films.

oh you know how much i love camp
aight, I'll watch Casino Royale tonight
no subject
Indeed. You do very much need to go into them in that mindset, though, camp and explosions being pretty much the whole point, rather than a nice garnish.
aight, I'll watch Casino Royale tonight
\o/ Maybe I will too, come to that . . .

Bond is like the Doctor... One man, many faces. :)

(See how this relates to DW? *g*)
So, you ought to watch Classic!Bond too. I've talked this over with Darcy, and we point you towards either Dr No (the one that started it all), From Russia With Love (just a brilliant detective yarn) or - if you want to be as Bond-ish as you can get - Goldfinger. Mmmmm, Connery.
