*huddles and rocks* Nothing makes sense any more. Nothing makes sense any more.

How can a River fan never have seen any James Bond, Star Wars, OR Indiana Jones??!?! This is like a fan of living having never experienced oxygen.

*rocks some more*

I'm sorry, I'm so sorry please forgive me

As a kid I was too busy watching Watership Down and Allegro Non Troppo to keep up with the cool kids.

*deep breath* Forgiven, of course--not your fault. *squares shoulders*

Right. We can fix this. I shall reapply myself to watching Press Gang and you shall take a crash course in River Song antecedents. I'd say take a taste of all three so you at least know what each is about and then you can decide if you want to go any deeper.

James Bond: Casino Royale (a bit unusual for a Bond film in that it's an origins story, but the whole feel and attitude of it is exactly right)

Star Wars: Episode IV, A New Hope (River's Pandorica/Big Bang outfit is a hybrid of Han and Leia's styles in the SW movies, so say the costume designers.)

Indiana Jones: The Last Crusade (technically the last of the original trilogy, but it's by far the best and you'll catch on fine)

As a kid I was too busy watching Watership Down and Allegro Non Troppo to keep up with the cool kids.
Well, I'm not sure if they're any of them "cool" per se. They are OTT campy pop culture, though, and that's far more fun *nod* That Italian thing sounds interesting, though (googled).

Alright, I'm making a trip to Civic Video and getting ALL of these. And a lot of popcorn.

Allegro Non Troppo is wonderful, it's basically Fantasia [which is itself amazing] but with the added bonus of social commentary and some really moving scenes.
Watership Down is... bunny rabbits living in a brutal communist-style dictatorship. Like Animal Farm. But bloodier and scarier. Excellent movie to inflict on someone's childhood.

Yay! I mean, basically River either is all of these characters, or she's playing dress up and pretending to be them in the great big sandbox known as the universe. You're gonna immediately recognize the source material.

I'll admit I have mixed feelings on Fantasia (I get bored in parts *shrug*), but I may give that a shot--Wikipedia said it bordered on parody?

Lol! I had to read the book in middle school and hated it. Did make for some entertaining complaining, though, and I'll admit that's worth a lot to me.

>>Wikipedia said it bordered on parody?

Yeah, it pokes fun at Disney's commercialism in parts. But some of it is also quite sad.

>>Lol! I had to read the book in middle school and hated it.

Reaaally? I loved it, but I grew up watching the movie. Why it's ever in the kid's section at Civic I don't know. BUNNY MASSACRES :(

The book is, like, 500 pages and pretty dull, and I think most of the social commentary was lost on me. And you're gonna start hating me if I admit I renamed all the rabbits things like Angora and Hossenfeffer, aren't you? So let's say I didn't do that. Yeah. *whistles*

I am like that with many things. Well, and I know plenty of people who like it too, including other people who read it in school with me.

Yeah, the book kind of gets misclassified as a kids book too. I think it's that there are talking rabbits.

Yeah, it's a lot more affecting when it's graphically depicted as opposed to just text.

>>And you're gonna start hating me if I admit I renamed all the rabbits things like Angora and Hossenfeffer, aren't you?

that's actually pretty funny

>>Yeah, the book kind of gets misclassified as a kids book too. I think it's that there are talking rabbits.

Talking rabbits overrides political allegory I see.

...What we were talking about here in the first place? Oh right...Daniel Craig in drag.

Daniel Craig in drag ----> communist rabbits.

I do enjoy these conversations.

Yeah, I'd certainly recommend anyone watch it at least once (and I have watched it many, many times). But if I were watching it today there would be a lot of parts I'd just plain skip.

I'm still in shock . . .

Oh, and I was just this morning thinking that there needs to be a River vid to 'Tomorrow Never Dies'! ('Darling I'm killed...')
'How you tease, how you leave me to burn . . .' with, say, a shot of the TARDIS exploding? Oh yes! You could probably make a decent River vid out of most of the Bond songs, come to think of it.

Like "Live and Let Die"?

Heck, the song from Casino Royale is called "You Know My Name"! And includes the line "I've seen angels fall from blinding heights / But you yourself are nothing so divine . . ."

ETA2: NOTHING! D:
Wow, vidders. Wow. At least there's the "World is Not Enough" one and the "Nobody Does It Better" one. Surely sooner or later people will catch on, and we can have a whole collection. Perhaps come the new season.
