An actual update
I suck at RL updates, but since stuff has actually been happening - here you go! :)
First of all, the second eldest (Impish Girl, just turned 18) got into drama school! She'd been going to lots of auditions and managed to get on the waiting list for *one* uni, so had resigned herself to just taking a year out and working, but no! Someone dropped out and the place is hers! She is very excited (and somewhat stunned), but come September she'll be off. She has a friend studying there already, which will be a massive help, since she'll have someone to show her around.
Moving on, the eldest (Miss M, 20) got a place at Cambridge two years ago to study Philosophy. She started autumn 2017, but returned after a single term. It was very much not the place for her. She then began volunteering with a conservation charity, planting trees and laying paths and building fences and such (and getting involved with the Climate Change marches), and enjoying wood crafts, whittling little figures and generally just taking a break. But maybe her little sister's sudden move (they're very close) prompted a change, because she decided that she'd like to study art. (Which she has always loved, much like me, except her GCSE teacher was truly awful and put her off for a long time.) So I suggested a Foundation Art course (a one year course where you try lots of different things and which prepares you for university study - I did one back in the day and we spent last Monday night going through my old port folio to see what sort of stuff was involved) - especially as we run one at the college where I work. And since I work there, and sorting out applications is literally my job, in less than a week she has had an interview, been offered and now has a place to start in September. :) She is now busy starting her Summer Homework, having carried off a large pile of our art books to her bedroom this morning.
So as not to leave the 'little one' out of it (The Cherub, 13), she has just done her grade 3 on her violin and will be doing Triple Science for her GCSEs. They're all very creative, but she's the one with the maths-genes. ;)
That's all for now, I need to get some breakfast.

(And your new hair sounds fab, in case I never find that comment again . . . )

Yes, I realised I should probably do a quick summary, since education differs so much from country to country.
Very exciting--congratulations to everyone!
Thank you! And all of it in under a week. It's a whirlwind, but a nice one. :)
I knew you'd studied art--did you do that in university too, or just the foundation course?
Well, I did the Foundation Course *at* a university, but then had Miss M and never got round to doing an actual degree. And now... I'd probably study literature, if I were to study again.
(And your new hair sounds fab, in case I never find that comment again . . . )
Oh thank you! Yes, I'd forgotten that I'd mentioned the hair - I think it was on my massive Reply To All The Things day.

(And given that my own little one is 11 now, I guess this shouldn't surprise me, but: omg they are so big, when did that happen?!)

And ELEVEN?? Why do other people's children grow so fast?

And GCSEs are... Well, they're the subjects/exams you take before starting the-English-equivalent to High School. So, when they're 16.

Clearly the key to happy children is to spend most of your life on the internet, writing fic...

Thank you! :) And yes, we're all crazy creative. (Darcy being a film maker as you probably know. And very musical. Our house is overrun with instruments, we have shelves full of books on art and philosophy - including philosophy of art! - and we all love writing too.)
It's so lovely to read things like this - positive updates and wonderful news amidst everything...else...you read on the internet these days.
You're very welcome. ♥ And yes, I know exactly what you mean. It's wonderful to have something good to focus on.

Congratulations on having such wonderful kids! it's a joy to read about them. I am glad to learn they are all doing well each on her path.
hope your breakfast was good, too. ;)

Well, I was 22 when I had her, so... yeah, I hear ya.

Thank you. :) And yes, it's lovely that they're doing things they want and are happy with.
hope your breakfast was good, too. ;)
I think it was? At least I presume so. ;)

Sadly, that doesn't surprise me...
It maybe a good thing she’s now found a new passion. Congrats to them all!
Thank you! And yes, art is a far more versatile subject. :)

I'm a big believer in that if university is not for you, you should not feel ashamed to leave. I'm glad Miss M has re-discovered her passion in Art and will be going to the same place you do so she has that family connection and feels supported.
Gosh, Triple Science for GSCEs! I hope she finds a particular subject that really interests her. :)

East 15 - so Southend. Although she applied all over - Glasgow, the Old Vic (Bristol) etc.

More that specific university - Cambridge is very posh (in all sense of the word) and she didn't fit in at all. Everyone was very nice, but it was not her sort of environment. Plus, although she's always been very academic, it was too dry for her. So yeah, she up and left.
I'm glad Miss M has re-discovered her passion in Art and will be going to the same place you do so she has that family connection and feels supported.
She said the other day that she is genuinely looking forward to starting - and can't really remember the last time she properly looked forward to something. <3

So do we! ;) She likes... maths, science, music, P.E., art/creativity/crafting, and any number of other subjects...

It's better to decide early on that university is not for you than leave it too late. We had one person on my intercollegiate (London not Oxbridge) special essay course who left two weeks before finals!
Good grief. D:
One of my nieces was going to do Philosophy but switched to Midwifery, which was a bit different!
Yes, quite a shift. I remember one lad (in our college) who swapped from construction to performing arts.
Glad Miss M has found something she wants to do now and many congrats to Impish Girl for getting in to drama school. Now that's hard!
Thank you! And yes, the chances of getting in are tiny. So we're all very proud!

They're SO BIG!! /o\
At least now the Cherub is on a grade 3, there shouldn't be too many cats being strangled (one of my brothers learnt violin!)
Much to our relief, she was always in tune, right from the start. I don't know if that's down to her, or her teacher at the time, but we never suffered like we expected.

Glad M has rediscovered her love for art and is looking forward to exploring it.

It's wonderful to see. And there's plenty of academic work also, so she gets to use both sides of her brain.
