How is Albus and Scorpius being friends queerbaiting, though? They have a passionate, devoted friendship and that's important. Aside from that, bisexuality is a thing: just because both boys show an interest in someone female, doesn't mean they can't also be attracted to someone male. I'm really confused about this.
I think it's the lack of queer characters, and the fact that Albus & Scorpius fit so well, that is the problem. Harry & Ron are close friends, but no one could read anything into it as such. Unlike Remus & Lupin f.ex.
Dunno, I think the article does a pretty good job of laying out its argument.
Maybe but however you read them, no blatant promises were made about Albus & Scorpius's relationship being romantic. Whether or not JKR had an ethical responsibliity to make them textually gay is a different story but it doesn't constitute queerbaiting in my opinion.
I guess it's the frustration at the overall lack of gay characters which wells over. Why aren't there any? And if there were, what would they look like? All we have is Dumbledore and I-forget-his-name (who were apparently in love) and had a very very close friendship... How would a gay love story about young boys look (in its beginning), except as a very close friendship?
It's not to say that they need to be gay (I've not read it, I don't know any specifics and can't make a personal judgement), but why shouldn't they be? Maybe she was worried that her story would be overshadowed by 'OMG THEY'RE GAY!!!' But why not add some other gay characters?
I thought it was an interesting article, and a different spin than the usual Tumblr posts criticising Harry's parenting etc.
I understand it's frustrating, I just don't get why everyone is expecting this particular story to fix that. I guess it was yet another story that *didn't* fix it...
ETA: Additional thought (and I'm sure you know all this, I'm dragging it out because it struck me) - Moffat did not include any gay characters in S5. It wasn't deliberate, it just didn't strike him. But when it was pointed out to him, he immediately rectified it in S6, including several great gay characters, none of whom were defined by their sexuality.
How come JK Rowling (who apparently has very diverse casts in her adult novels) hasn't done anything like the same? It's disappointing.
That is a very good point about Moff as opposed to JKR (but oh my God, can you imagine the flames that would occur if you pointed it out?)
The article was interesting; I just get fed up of people throwing around the term "queerbaiting" because that's a very specific thing (especially when it comes to Remus and Tonks). I do understand that the continued lack of official gay characters in the HP universe is disappointing and also puzzling given JKR's other works.

I just get fed up of people throwing around the term "queerbaiting" because that's a very specific thing See I can't even comment, because I haven't seen it. It's all relying on other people's interpretations. (Although I can't see why Remus couldn't be bi??? That just strikes me as churlish.)
I do understand that the continued lack of official gay characters in the HP universe is disappointing and also puzzling given JKR's other works. I'm a little like Moffat - back when I was reading them, I didn't notice what wasn't there. So I'm as guilty as anyone. Here's to improving!

He could certainly be bi. Tonks could be bi. Tonks could even be pansexual! I see so much bi-phoba and bi-erasure when it comes to Remus & Tonks's marriage. So bisexuals never have long-term relationships with members of the opposite sex? Excuse me while I roll my eyes so hard they fall out of my head. Bringing up Sirius and Remus's relationship really weakened the argument for me as there is so little canon evidence for that pairing. God knows it was popular, God knows people really wanted it to be canon, but it's not. Albus/Scorpius has far, far more basis than Remus/Sirius.

I haven't read or seen the play (so can't comment on whether Albus & Scorpius constitute gueerbaiting), but the general lack of gay characters equates to many missed opportunities.
Well, I was more talking about the lack of gay characters in general, as I don't really ship H/D nor their sons (That's my ship - R/S - in my icon). But I agree it would have been neat for a variety of reasons!
Well, I was more talking about the lack of gay characters in general Oh yes - I just dragged out Harry/Draco as one of THOSE ships. (I was never into HP, so all I know of the fandom I know by osmosis.)

It's easy to shout on the internet, far more difficult to change the systems no one questions.
