I don't have time to reply to comments (yet), but having skimmed the thread for AOQ's review of 'Lessons' I discovered that there are people who don't think Crazy!Spike is drop dead gorgeous. So I felt compelled to make a poll.

I was honestly stunned to hear OBS say that, I mean, sure he's male (at least I think he is, but still...)

Definitely male. And sometimes the male brain is just *weird* - I mean there's some of the posters who felt cheated when Willow went evil. They had hoped for half a season of Mistress!of!Pain!Willow, all in leather and riding ponies like people... and they think we're strange!

Gorgeous! I almost passed out when I first saw his hair. It was nice to have something diferent, I can't believe Joss wanted to return to the bleached blond helmet of 6 seasons so soon.

It could have been used as an Angel/Angelus thing for Spike. Instead of a name change, we could refer to bleached hair Spike as soulless Spike :P

lol, I was shocked when I read that about his hair. That's probably about my most favorite Spike hair ever - and it didn't last too long :((

I've been meaning to ask you. Did you read most of the Grave discussion? I had to stop reading S6 stuff early this week (coz I couldn't do it a.n.y.m.o.r.e) and only read the 1st 40 posts or so, but if you did, do you remember what AOQ's and OBS' stand was on Spike going for his soul.

Were they in the camp that believed that's what he was going for or the camp that insists he was going to get his chip out and everything's just a retcon?

AOQ seems to be in the camp that believes Spike went for the soul, I think OBS did too.

OBS is (obviously) in the 'Spike went to get his soul' camp. He also had some very insightful thoughts on the rants against the chip (because it was the chip that curbed his vampire nature to such an extent that he can't go back).

Anyway, here's one of AOQ's replies:

Exactly. I can see why OBS keeps mentioning how easy it is to forget,
but *the chip doesn't work on Buffy*. He can be himself with her, as
he proved in "Seeing Red." Spike frames his choice as being about
Buffy, not just about himself. Only the soul can change the way things
are between them. (Also, he's wanted the chip out for a long time, so
why not face the trials sooner?)

Ah yes. Burt had gone off on some bizarre rant about the angry Spike fans and Joss trying to launch Firefly and therefore he ret-conned Spike's story. This was AOQ's reply:

Back when I was new at this, I made the mistake of making an
unsupported blanket statement about writer motivations, and Mike Zeares
responded that "this is the kind of criticism that I don't have time
for." I know where he's coming from. Not only is this pure
speculation based on pretty much nothing, but the "retconned" story is
all there, clunky misdirect and all, starting with "Seeing Red."

Maybe I'm missing secret feminine visual cues here but doesn't the ranting and disconnected "crazy" blather bore anyone else? I have a strong preference for characters who can reason, plan, and carry on at least simple conversations.

Plus, that blue shirt with half sleeves? Eeew.

Oh we're only talking about the Spike on the picture - not Crazy!Spike in general. It's the look more than anything: The curls tipped with blonde, the half open shirt, the cuts (not in a 'cuts are sexy' particularly, but because they show just how desperate and crushed he is)... it's just something that hits (most women) in *all* the right places. A general *guh* that can't be rationalised.

Crazy Spike is damn hot. I remember when I first watched Lessons and Beneath You, I couldn't get past how angsty and crazy poor Spike was. Who'd have thought that watching a character stalk a rat could be so darn sexy. :p
