Links.

We’re losing all our Strong Female Characters to Trinity Syndrome.
Bringing in a Strong Female Character™ isn’t actually a feminist statement, or an inclusionary statement, or even a basic equality statement, if the character doesn’t have any reason to be in the story except to let filmmakers point at her on the poster and say “See? This film totally respects strong women!”

Why I'm Finally Speaking Up About What Terry Richardson Did to Me
I would keep being the girl who could shrug it off and joke about it; no one can feel sorry for the girl who’s laughing. That is, unless no one else is laughing along with you.

Why does sexism persist in the video games industry?
The issue arose after James Therien, technical director at European gamemaker Ubisoft, told trade publication VideoGamer that the latest instalment of Ubisoft hit Assassin's Creed would not feature any playable female characters because it would have "doubled the work".

Also - does anyone know of a Clara moodtheme? I've googled, but can't find one. :(

ETA: And some good news: Sudan death sentence woman freed.

Thank you for the articles - they're all an interesting read :)

I'm on a "Stargate SG-1" rewatch at the moment, and Sam definitely was important for the story there.

Sorry, that anonymous was me. I didn't realize I was not logged in.

True. Lois in "Lois & Clark" definitely also was a strong woman - even though she needed rescuing once in a while, often she also managed to get out of trouble by herself, when hubby was busy otherwise.

Both shows are highly recommended, if you never watched them!

Ooh! I read the first article the other day and loved it, and thanks for the third article because it directly relates to my research!

What good news about Meriam Ibrahim.

Oh good grief! It gives me the urge to insist the UK should immediately arrest everyone who has converted to Islam. She didn't even convert as she was never a muslim anyway, as far as I can tell, the whole thing is based on the fact that her father was muslim and so she must have been...

[identity profile] curiouswombat.livejournal.com 2014-06-24 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
As long as he was muslim, she counts too.

Which is why I almost want someone to round up all the Muslim converts and then point out that, by Sudanese definitions, they are all apostate as their fathers were clearly Christian! (Even if the fathers never went to church at all, the chances are they were baptised... And even if they weren't I reckon they would still have put CofE on their census forms!)

I've actually already read a couple of these, you have good article taste! The games one is new though, as is the news about that poor Sudanese woman. Really good news there though!

Oh, damn. Sad but not too surprising. That poor family!

I know, right? On the one hand I really admire her for sticking to her convictions. But with her life and her children's lives hanging in the balance... I don't know what I'd do!

What a crazy world.
