I think Jim is gone

Jim Across The Hall was not across the hall all day yesterday. And he's not there today. I think they have re-homed him. I'm going to ask tomorrow. It's so weird to have him just disappear but there is no reason why they should tell us - his neighbors - except to say he's ok. Yesterday, during elbow coffee, the security guard who makes checks* was by and we asked him to check and he came back and said that Jim was fine. He did not, in retrospect, say Jim was there. IF Jim was on his list of People Not Home, then he would say Jim is fine.

Yesterday's and today's newspapers are outside his door and the door has not been opened since Friday.

*The doors have a sensor and if you do not open yours by 10 am, they are alerted and call you or come find your dead body.

I sent the head of Health Services a note just now asking about him. We may never find out a thing. Oh well. He was a nice neighbor to have.

The Mariners lost again last night. It's kind of nostalgic. Like the Mariners of old who rarely won a game.

Today's game is on Peacock which is weird. As basically a non-sports person, I see no reason to sprinkle sports shit on every single airwave. For real sports people, it must be a nightmare. For me, it's just annoying to have to wade through sports shit to get to real TV streaming on every single stream. Get off my lawn.

My Peacock account runs until the end of April and I haven't decided whether or not to renew. But, at least I have today's game. It will be interesting to see if they use local commentators or bring their own.

I do want to get a swim in. And I might want to go to Safeway, but there's nothing on my list that can't wait so I might hold off.

It looks like the sun might come out so I think I'll go swim before it does.

Is there an interesting story behind your username?my username is actually just a JP nickname for my favorite character, Aventurine from honkai star rail! you'll see me mention him a lot hehe

Location and language(s):i live in the USA and speak only english! i am currently learning japanese, though.

Age range (e.g 20s, 30s, etc.):30's

Hot button/deal breaker issues that will likely lead to unfriending:all i ask is that you don't be a jerk or a bigot/etc, that's it really. i'm pretty chill otherwise.

Do you have an "About Me" post new friends can read to get a sense of who you are, the people you talk about regularly, etc.? i DO have a sticky/intro post on my journal that provides a bit more info about me!

Is your profile up-to-date or at all useful?i'd say pretty accurate, yeah!

List a few things you think it's important new friends know about you right away:i love aventurine --

You mostly write about:fandom stuff and personal/irl stuff

You never or very rarely write about:serious/heavy personal stuff. if i do ever write about that, then it will have a proper warning on it.

Is your journal mostly public, locked, or a mix of public and locked?my journal is open to the public!

Do you use filters for certain types of posts (e.g. fandom-related posts, or posts about sex, or mental health issues, etc.)?i do! i make sure to tag my entries appropriately.

Your posting frequency (e.g. daily, every few days, weekly, etc.):i'd say a few times a week

Does your journal frequently include any of the following: memes, linkspams, gifs, photos, videos, etc?the occasional image, but that's not very common.

What do you enjoy most about journaling?opening up, talking about myself more and talking to people!

How often do you read your friends list (e.g. daily, every other day, once a week, etc.)?i try to read at LEAST once a day

You really enjoy reading about:you mean on dreamwidth? just about anything, i'm not picky

You have very little interest in reading about: N/A

Your thoughts on journals that regularly include any of the following: memes, linkspams, gifs, photos, videos, etc?i don't mind them!

When it comes to comments on your posts, what matters more -- quality or quantity?i have no preference. i guess quality?

Do you unfriend people who don't comment much, even if you know they are reading you regularly?
nope! if you can't comment much, then it's all good. i imagine there's a good reason behind it.

What is your approach when it comes to commenting on other journals?i just comment whatever's comes to mind, if that makes any sense. of course it'll be related to the entry's subject matter

When you friend someone, but things don't really click, do you unfriend them without warning, or do you send them a note first? How do you prefer to be unfriended in similar circumstances?i never really had to do this before, so i really don't know how to answer. i'm not an unfriender i suppose, LOL

AND LASTLY

Friending memes often ask people to list their favourite TV shows, movies, books, etc., but more often than not, those aren't things people actually write about in their journal. Do you have any favourite TV shows, movies, books, etc., that you DO often write about -- not necessarily in a fandom sort of way, just in general?i looove talking about anything hoyoverse (genshin/honkai/zenless) and whatever other online/gacha game i'm playing at the time!

Any final thoughts you'd like to share with potential new friends? hello! i hope we can become friends and get to know each other more ^-^ i'm pretty chill i'd say!

It's been another homebody weekend, which I don't regret in the slightest. I did go out on Friday night to an event at the tiny local museum, which was a launch of sorts for its latest temporary exhibition. The museum is so small that the temporary exhibitions are housed in a single room about the size of my kitchen; this one was about the history of beer-making, and so the launch event involved talks and tasters from a trio of local breweries. We followed this up with a drink in our favourite cafe/bar, which was heaving with customers — always a good sign on a Friday night.

Other than that, it's been spring cleaning — I cleaned all the external windows and windowsills, including clambering onto the kitchen roof in order to get at our upper floor bedroom windows — classes and swimming at the gym, and batch-cooking. Matthias and I also spent half an hour or so this morning planting wildflower seeds in the front and back garden raised beds, plus beetroot seeds in the vegetable beds. The other seeds that I started off in the growhouse — chives, cucumbers, rocket, salad greens, and spring onions — are coming along nicely, even though it's been cold.

Other good things: Pretty Lethal, the ridiculous black comedy/luridly violent action thriller involving a troupe of American ballet dancers stranded in a Hungarian forest en route to a competition in Budapest, and swept up into a deadly showdown between two rival gangs of goons who want to kill them, one of which is headed up by bitter ex-ballet dancer Uma Thurman (sporting an indeterminate Eastern European accent). The soundtrack is all scores from famous ballets, and all the action scenes involve a sort of intersection of martial arts and ballet. It's as silly as it sounds, and made for a great Saturday night film.

I finished up my Earthsea reread over lunch with The Other Wind, which I think I've only ever read once or twice, but which remains achingly beautiful, like a dragon's half-remembered flight across a sunset sky. I think the peak of the series is probably Tehanu, though, which always renders me awestruck. I have read the Earthsea short story collections at some point, but I don't own copies, so those will have to wait if I want the reread to be fully complete. For now, though, I plan to turn to one of the books from my stack of five from the public library, or possibly Amal El-Mohtar's new short story collection, which I'd preordered and was delivered to me last week.

I hope you've all been having similarly cosy weekends.

First off, I missed doing a check in last week so to catch up, I was 196.4 last week and 195.9 this week. Yes, it's going down but I'm tracking calories and weighing things and it should be at at least a pound or more per week at the deficit that I'm eating. Ah well. I have another month of the 2.5 dose and since the effectiveness is wearing off and the weight is on the verge of completely stalling, I'll let the doc know that it's time to go up a level for the month after that. The side effects are lessening so it's time. I probably could have bumped up already but I'll just exercise willpower for a month.

I am going to experiment with not tracking calories this week and see how it goes. I know mentally I'll be doing the math which is fine and I'll be aware of making good food choices. I'm also going to take off a couple of random days this week since I need to start slowly chewing up vacation days as not to lose any at the end of June and also since Bossdude Josh is off this week taking his daughter to colleges so it's an ideal time. I'll do some filming on those days as well as will get to the Y.

I won't be taking tomorrow off, though it's tempting because I got to see my girl Noor and also be there for the PIPING HOT TEA. That post I made last week about Lindsay? Well, there is NEWS. Girl put in her NOTICE! WOO HOO! Luckily for Elaine and Josh, the head of the business office is going to let them list the position since he knows that having more staff is a dire need in our office. Not that any of the help is going to be for me but I digress.

Anyway, on Friday, Elaine was annoying the SHIT out of me with her woe is me crap and how she's so busyyyyy with no hellllp. Bitch, shut UP. You are finally getting rid of the dead weight to get a new and better person so suck it up.

Now there IS going to be more drama because Lindsay wants to take her I think they said 60 sick days. Uh...unless you're getting a doctor to write you out with some form of dire illness, you can't do that. So it'll be interesting to see how THAT goes.

Also, Emily's right hand gal Alicia will be applying for the job and Noor is going to help me push having her get it since she would be a fantastic and well qualified person. It would suck for Emily to lose her but their center is slowly dying so it's time for people to jump ship. Emily's looking and not getting bites but fortunately as long as she makes it to August without the center going tits up, she'll be at her 25 years and can retire with full benefits and look for non-RU, non-State jobs

So this week should be interesting, eh?

Can't believe it's Holy Week already except that that was definitely Palm Sunday last night. The weather's been oscillating between "too warm for the start of spring" and "too cold for the start of spring", which is relatively normal, but on Wednesday we had rain, sleet, hail, and snow, which actually stuck on the ground for a bit! And the Wednesday before was 17C. It is, however, definitely spring now and not late winter. Friday was the first day I got tricked by the lengthening days into not realising that it was later evening than I thought, and the clocks hadn't even changed then! We're into BST now, though.

I feel like I've been busy but I couldn't say with what. The big testing thing at work is now into week seven of two, and is certainly not going to be done before Easter (...admittedly part of this is because the team in charge have had to go away and make some decisions about how things are going to function in the new set-up, because apparently it didn't occur to anyone that they needed to agree basic processes before they went into UAT...). Choir has been a contributor, as ever, and I'm off shortly for a double Sunday rehearsal. I have done a little bit of socialising, but not as much as I would like.

However, today's big achievement is that I finally! managed to de-DRM my Kindle books, and am now putting them into my ebook reader at LAST. A triumph.

Kang Han "We Do Not Part" (Penguin)

This is a tragic tale of South Korean history. It is revealed through the friendship of two women, Inseon and Kyungha. Inseon has had a horrifying accident while engaging in carpentry and is in the hospital suffering terrible torment as her injury is being treated. She asks her friend to come to the hospital immediately and then begs her to travel to her home to care for her beloved bird. Kyungha agrees when she realizes that Ami has no other means of survival and will surely die if she does not go. However, she must leave immediately and the journey is harrowing as she is forced to travel there in the midst of a dangerous snowstorm. Once she arrives, she is haunted by memories, dreams and visions. Through these revelations the reader learns of a gruesome period of time that has been covered up and hidden.
Inseon had been researching a tragedy that had directly affected her own family, a mass murder that had resulted in thousands upon thousands of deaths throughout the country, but she concentrated her research on Jeju Island where she lived. The slaughter had been justified by the imperative to stamp out Communism. Suspected citizens and their families, the elderly and the infants, who were thought to be connected in any way to Communism, were arrested, murdered and tortured. The methods used were absolutely barbaric. One of the most difficult reveals for me was the insinuation that the United States was complicit in this horror.
The visual images of bloodstained snow juxtaposed over its feathery beauty is painful. The details of the suffering are truly distressing, and I found it to be a difficult book read. The message is dark, but it is important because it reveals a little-known part of history as it shines a light on a massacre that took place on Jeju Island, in the mid-20th century. It took place in the time of the Korean War and is a story that should see the light of day.

This novel was also about friendship and the nature of the love between a husband and wife and a parent and child. How has the horror of that massacre traveled from generation to generation? How have the survivors been able to cope with and handle the tragedy? What was it that drove Inseon to research the massacre so intensely?

There were paranormal, mystical scenes that were totally otherworldly. The movement of the story was also sometimes confusing, but the lyrical quality of the narrative made it compelling, just the same. I listened to the audio along with the print read of the book, and the narrator made it spellbinding. However, I think most readers will have to research the real back story of the Bodo League massacre, in Korea, to understand why it occurred and why there were long-term effects on society and the world.

Welcome back!

Most of today’s edition comes with new releases! I think these are all 2026 release, if memory serves from when I put them in the SBTB repo. There are two romances and two non-fiction titles.

Want to pass along any recommendations? Leave them in the comments!

A Woman’s Work

If you are at all interested in the history of midwifery or how pregnancy has evolved over time, this is the book for you. I will not that “mothering” is a bit of a misclassification, as the content skews more toward birthing rather than parenthood.

From the author of Unwell Women comes a powerful and groundbreaking new narrative history of motherhood and mothering.

Mothers make history. But what it has meant for mothers to do the physical and emotional work of mothering has, for centuries, been neglected in the stories of the past. Patriarchal control of motherhood has relegated the acts of growing, birthing, nurturing, and loving to the sidelines, and deemed it unimportant, women’s work. Now, through the voices of women themselves, Elinor Cleghorn reclaims and retells the history of motherhood, showcasing the mothers, othermothers, midwives, activists, community leaders, and more who have shaped the course of history.

Beginning in the ancient world, we encounter a figurine made for a childbirth ritual over three thousand years ago. We meet extraordinary writers and poets, like Anne Bradstreet and Elizabeth Jocelin, who were expressing their innermost feelings about motherhood. During the seventeenth century, in the streets of London, we encounter unmarried mothers struggling against stigma and shame, and the women who strove to help them. Later, pioneers like Mary Wollstonecraft laid the intellectual foundation for the liberation of motherhood from male control, and the abhorrent treatment of enslaved mothers was brought to public attention by courageous activists like Sojourner Truth. These and many other brave characters lobbied for mothers of all classes and circumstances to be valued, respected, and supported–not as reproductive vessels, but as people.

Eat Your Heart Out

I was hunting around for some new dark romances and I came across this novella. I immediately added it to my TBR pile. It’s showing up as $2.99 right now, so I may just buy a digital copy because it sounds wild.

I didn’t eat people. Just men. First of all, I’d like to set the record straight. I wasn’t a cannibal, ʼkay?

I didn’t eat people. Just men. I ate their hearts out before they ever saw me coming. Figuratively, of course. Most of the time.

Sometimes a girl had to do what a girl had to do. And sometimes what I had to do was fry those suckers up with a little bit of buttermilk and enough shortening to give ya coronary.

I wouldn’t ever apologize for it.

Which was something else you should know about me. I was unapologetic. Then again, so was he. Else the hotshot with a blade bigger than his d*ck wouldn’t have barged his way into my little apartment without so much as a “my bad, sorry for disturbing you, ma’am.”

And I wouldn’t have been forced to tie him to a chair and teach him some manners. But here we are, ain’t we?

Just a sweet little Southern girl and the big bad pickle-diddler who thought he was about to get his rocks off.

Guess it wasn’t his lucky day. Sure was mine, though.

Eat Your Heart Out is a dark standalone novella with a HEA. Please heed the trigger warnings at the beginning of the book.

Law Maker

Big shoutout to C and Deborah, whose discussion on a previous Whatcha Reading, made me add this to my personal TBR pile. I love finding new reads from y’all!

Clara
Invisibility has been my go-to survival skill since childhood. So I hide behind my thick glasses and heavy fringe, working as a teaching assistant at the exclusive Molton Prep, happy with my seven-year-old pupils and studiously avoiding their posh parents. My one secret indulgence? Watching the gorgeous but wildly intimidating Lord Sterling sweep into school to collect his son.

I’m ridiculous. Not only is Rafe completely terrifying, but he’s a high-profile barrister destined to be the UK’s youngest ever judge. A girl with a background like mine should stay out of his way.

Rafe
How dare the school insist that I can’t meet the Miss Clara, who told my son his brain “works differently”? Nobody refuses a meeting with me. But when I bulldoze my way past the school rules to confront her, I’m shocked by how much this shy woman affects me. She might be too scared to make eye contact, but when it comes to defending my son, she’s surprisingly fierce. And after I convince her to work as my son’s tutor and she gradually stops flinching in my presence, my obsession with her only grows.

As a rule, I get what I want, and after seeing glimpses of her humour, kind heart and surprising strength, I want Clara Morris with an intensity I’ve never felt before. But I should be careful what I wish for, because Clara Morris is not who she says she is.

In my arrogance, I push her away, not realising that her fear runs deeper than simple shyness, not seeing the danger she’s in until it’s too late…

LAW MAKER is an opposites attract, billionaire, single father, contemporary romance, perfect for fans of intense, protective heroes and heroines overcoming trauma to find their happily ever after.

Content warning: this book features scenes of domestic violence.

Rebel of the Regency

I’ve enjoyed Foster’s Vulgar History Podcast, and I’m so happy to see she got herself a book deal from all of her hard and very entertaining work!

The dramatic, absolutely outrageous story of Caroline of Brunswick, a beloved icon of the Regency era, who uplifted the voice of the public and unabashedly defied society’s expectations, yet was shockingly robbed of her crown, from the host of the Vulgar History podcast.

Caroline Amelia Elizabeth, Princess of Brunswick, was born in the northern German town of Braunschweig. Her mother and father, the duke and duchess, instantly knew one there was something irrefutably untamable about their daughter. She grew up a wild child, sequestered from others to protect her family’s reputation—a Regency-era Rapunzel.

She was freed from this gilded cage by an unexpected marriage proposal from George Augustus Frederick, Prince of Wales and the eldest son of George III and Queen Charlotte. Caroline was entirely unprepared for the backstabbing mean girls of the royal court. Always staying true to herself, she stepped into her role of queen-to-be without compromising her character, showing off her affinity for fashion, her many eccentric hobbies, and ultimately, her infallible spirit, despite being ostracized as an outsider by her in-laws.

And so Caroline became the unlikely figurehead of the anti-monarchists, aided by the just-emerging tabloid press. Yet, despite her status as a revolutionary heroine, Caroline’s name faded away following her death. Until now.

For fans of Normal Women, Ann Foster brings us the riveting story of Caroline of Brunswick, Britain’s uncrowned queen, through an empowering examination of womanhood and autonomy that feels just as relevant today.
