DW Drabble
So, life is sort-of kind-of back to normal. And... I wrote a drabble! Maybe it should have been a ficlet, because 100 words restricts everything, but I think it just about works. And I don't have time for anything more...
Title: A Promise Kept.
Summary: Amy and the Doctor talk about River.
Characters: Amy, Eleven.
Rating: U
Length: 100 words precisely in Appleworks.
Setting: Some time post-A Good Man Goes To War, hence SPOILERS!
A Promise Kept.
“Doctor. About River...”
He stops fiddling, slowly meets her eyes.
“She’s... she’s my little Melody. And she grows up to... marry you. Or near enough. Plus she’s in prison and...”
Her voices catches.
“They stole her once. And life with you - you’re so dangerous. And I-”
He reaches out, cradles her cheek, and in his eyes are dark, painful shadows - just like those that show up whenever he talks of his people.
But when he speaks it is with absolute conviction.
“Amy, listen. I promise you this: I will always be there to catch her. Always.”
She nods.
“You’d better.”

Heh. I consider 5000 words *short*...
but this is just perfect.
Aw, thank you.
I can see them having a big hug-fest after.
:)
YAY META
Sh! I'm not supposed to be here...

This was heartbreaking and gorgeaus, like the promise he made to protect her in AGMGTW:)

ETA: Btw, the 'Oh please' above was meant in a 'oh please do!' rather than a weird backwards dismissive way. Darn all this typing where you can't catch inflections. /o\

Aw, thank you. But this promise is one he knows that he keeps. ♥ (Oh River, why so beautiful and tragic? Um - at some point I will manage to carve out time to write a big review/meta/essay on S6 and Moffat Who so far... There's just so much there.)

An essay would be interesting to read, because as you say there is so much to write on Season 6 :)

And I love that you used Amy for this. Everybody's been writing scenes like this with Rory, but . . . Amy! I miss their relationship, and I feel like there's all sorts of extra layers and weight between them that you don't have between the Doctor and Rory.

Yes, those were my feelings too. I would have liked 50 or so more words, but I managed. :)
You've reminded me of that delicious shock that came with ToA, when you first sat down and really worked through the implications of that opening sequence.
Which was indeed the inspiration!

It really had to be Amy. (Fishfingers and custard.) Rory, in this instance, is the outsider, the confidant, but Amy is the one at the heart - the one who was a little girl, let down by the Doctor, and who chose Rory. But River, so very clearly, chooses the Doctor, always, and Amy must want to make sure that he'll not let her down. (And now I'm thinking of Rose, and the possibility of Amy having heard her story, and not wanting a similar fate for River...)

You know, I don't think I've ever written a proper drabble? the HIMYM community was supremely unconcerned with the technicalities, so "drabble" to me still mostly means "short fic." But then I don't really need any encouragement to write tersely ; )

Mmmm, well put.

Huh--you know, I think I could see that? I mean, apparently Eleven's been fairly chatty about the Time War, so I could see Rose coming up and him actually talking about her in a fairly straightforward way.

Funny how that works. The Buffy fandom tends towards '100 words PRECISELY!!!'
But then I don't really need any encouragement to write tersely ; )
No. I wouldn't say so. ;)

Now I want to read that fic. Plus, a fair number of companions end up dead or worse. I think Amy must worry...

nice to see that you can write drabbles. Until I wrote that first one; immediately prior to joining lj, IIRC, I didn't think I could write anything that didn't threaten to make War and Peace look like an office memo :-)
I think Rory would just stare him in the eye and the Doctor would know everything he needed to know about his fate re: Rory is the Beast gif, I sent you :-)
Like it, btw.
Long Live Wee!Amelia and her Raggedy Men,

Heee! I'm good at that too! :)

Yes, rather. Although the female of the species is more deadly...

♥ Thank you.
TBH I was very disappointed by the finale, plot-wise, but the emotional notes were good and this drabble touched on the parts of the episode that really resonated with me.
I am planning on writing a big meta post at some point (I've got notes, but no time yet), so we can talk then! :)

I love them so much it is RIDICULOUS!

Then again, it probably wouldn't have worked as well if Melody had found out about "River Song" any other time than when she first met the Doctor.
Either way, yes, River/Doctor is pretty awesome. And it feels a lot less forced than Rose did. >_>;;

LKH was rushed, but it did work, so... I'm not complaining. What I want, actually, is for the Master to come back, just so River can run rings around him.

Well Rose was that head-over-heels love-at-first-sight kinda love (which did develop, credit where credit's due), but it's very different from the kind of long term love/hate/married thing the Doctor & River have going on. Like I said in my meta, River is a combination of Rose & the Master, and it's like cryptonite for our dear Doctor...

TBH I would like to see how Moffat handles the Master. After seeing Delgado's performance, I didn't much like the way RTD wrote him.
The way I see it, Rose was more that teenage/high school romance. Like "I love you and this is gonna last forever!" and then she moves away to college and they never see each other again. I think that's why so many younger fans identify with it and swear by Rose/Doctor, because it feels like the romance they see in movies and in school and all over their lives, instead of a more in-depth, long-term "adult" romance like Doctor/River.

Nope. Not in a million years. Sorry. :)

... This is obviously a personal thing, but I could totally spend forever watching John Simm and David Tennant flirting. *cough* (This is even funnier now we have River...)

You've seen Sandcastles in the Sand, right?
