Happy Birthday
[livejournal.com profile] madam_rptr

I hope you have a wonderful day with lots of presents and naked vampires a happy family. :)

So, what’s been happening? Not an awful lot. Darcy’s paternity leave is nearly finished and tomorrow my parents arrive for the weekend. *sigh* This is the downside of being an only child I guess - there is only me providing them with grandchildren. But I suppose I can cope with a weekend...

One of the more bothersome aspects of having a baby is all the health professionals who keep visiting. Of course it’s good that they look after you and make sure that everything is fine, but...

(Oh, I should probably mention that this are just my impressions, based on the people I’ve been in contact with. I don’t want to offend anyone!)

As already mentioned, midwives are very encouraging! Which I guess is part of the job, I just wish they wouldn’t keep doing it 10 days after the baby arrived.

But that’s not what I want to talk about. Since the girls are so big, I’d almost forgotten about Health Visitors. Their speciality is concern! The one I had when we lived in York was particularly bad. Every visit she would ask me (with accompanying *look*) if everything was OK? (Translation: Husband beating you up? Children running amok? Are you depressed? Don’t worry! You can tell me!) I know that she was just doing her job, but I began to get really annoyed by the fact that she appeared to assume that everyone had problems. I can’t count the times I’d say “I’m fine!” with what I hoped was a sincere smile on my face as I silently begged her to stop. If I *had* had any problems I certainly wouldn’t have told her!

OK, mini-rant over. I guess it’s just all those privacy issues coming up again.

Baby E is growing and being sweet and I’m sure she smiled back last night! :) (I know she’s only 14 days old, but you weren’t there! I smiled and she smiled back! Too cute for words.) I promise a pic spam as soon as we get some photos developed - she has tiny curls! ::tries to curb the squeeing::

Thankfully Darcy is as happy/excited/adoring as I am. Although he is slightly conflicted. His two main reactions are: ‘OMG cute baby!!! Lets have 5 more!’ and ‘OMG sexy slim wife!!! You should never be pregnant again!’ Heee! ;)

Hmm, I’m sure there were lots of things I meant to talk about and now I can’t remember any. So I guess I’ll say something about tv.

Watched ‘House’ last night, which was entertaining as always, although the whole Vogler business was a tad on the simplistic side. I wish they’d fleshed out the character a bit more, because he was just such a grade A bastard all round. Not that the dream at the beginning didn’t amuse me no end (and - surprise, surprise - brought back instant recollections of Parker with flowers and a tub of ice cream! Heh.).

Also very happy to see the return of QI. If it was possible I’d love to have little miniature versions of Alan Davies and Stephen Fry. *sigh* Stephen Fry attempting to explain the odd qualities of custard (you can walk on it) and sounding more dirty with every attempt was just priceless! :)

I was going to write something about ‘Supernanny’, but it’ll have to wait until another time. For now all I’ll say is, that how come some people appear to have no common sense? I was only 22 when I had Little Miss M, and I’d never had anything to do with babies or children (except for a bit of baby sitting, but putting a 3-year old to bed is hardly a parenting course). I’m far from a perfect mother, but my children are happy and mostly well-behaved. It’s hard work sometimes, but I can’t remember ever being completely clueless.

Anyway, it’s getting late, and I’ve spent a couple of days writing this, so I really ought to post!

Interesting - we have no health care visitors here, as a general rule. If you have a normal delivery, they just send you home the next day like you really know what you're doing. ;-) On one hand, it would be nice to have someone checking in - on the other, it would really bug me, too.

I like to watch Supernanny because after I feel like the wisest parent in the world. ;-)

Glad everything is still going so well!

Although he is slightly conflicted. His two main reactions are: ‘OMG cute baby!!! Lets have 5 more!’ and ‘OMG sexy slim wife!!! You should never be pregnant again!’ Heee! ;) Poor Darcy. The need to reproduce versus Hot Mamma - the eternal male conflict.
although the whole Vogler business was a tad on the simplistic side. I wish they’d fleshed out the character a bit more, because he was just such a grade A bastard all round. Trust me, when he leaves the show gets much better.

We demand photos!!
Glad to hear everyone is doing well despite pesky Health Visitors. We don't have those - they toss you out of the hospital asap and you're on your own to visit the Dr. for post-natal business.

Health Visitors - the midwife is legally responsible for the well-being of both mother and child until the baby is ten days old, then the responsibility passes to the HV.

Usually this means the midwife visits every day until ten days, and the HV arrives on her heels for her first visit. They usually visit weekly for a month or so, then tail off - once the baby is about a year they usually now only do two developmentals as long as there are no problems.

Problems the HV helps with usually are nothing to do with husbands beating you up etc. - their main area of expertise is child development - so they really would expect 'problems' to be 'she isn't feeding well', 'I think she has colic', 'is this normal poo?' 'Is she gaining wieght at the right weight?' at this age, followed by 'When should I think about weaning?' 'Should she be sleeping through the night?' 'I'm worried about her hearing - she doesn't respond to my voice the way the others did' or whatever. They also are required to do a number of developmental tests between ten-days and school starting age at four.

Unless the law has changed, they have a legal right to see the child, but no legal right of entry - so you can insist on them standing outside your gate whilst you show them the baby!

Although there are times when the mother is being abused, or is obviously suffering from post-natal depression, and theHV will be able to help them get whatever other aid they need.

They really should check with her that she has no pelvic floor problems when she does the baby's six week developmental check, because although the doctor usually does an internal at six weeks, they don't always ask the obvious question 'Do you leak urine at all, and have you got normal bowel sensation?' They often just expect that you would mention it unprompted if you had a problem.

So - here endeth the lesson on the role of the Health Visitor - of which, I hasten to add, I am not one!

Oh how I love QI - we watched episode one on 2, then episode 2 on 4 last week, and am currently watching 2 on 2 again, and then we'll watch 3 on 4!!!! I love Stephen Fry's scottish accents!

Watched ‘House’ last night, which was entertaining as always, although the whole Vogler business was a tad on the simplistic side.

Yes, what is his motivation?? I *love* House but it's really entirely due to Hugh Laurie. They could build an entire episode out of him snarking and I really wouldn't care, but the other characters do need a bit of motivation.

Glad to hear that Baby E is so sweet, smiling already (I won't even try and disillusion you *g*) and everything is going well.

I was afraid that I'd rather hijacked your journal when I saw how long that was!!

the new one just happened to have a touch of that 'Are you alright?' 'Are you sure?' that the old one did.

They do tend to be a bit intense sometimes don't they? I think the more practical nurses who want to work in the community do their District Nurse training - the ones who don't really like getting their hands dirty train as HVs!! (Hope none of them are reading this!)

Yes, found this quite interesting as well. It's very much "fend for yourself" here. In fact it's very rare to get home visits of any kind from health care workers although it's sometimes done with the elderly.

Glad to hear you and baby E are doing well - she's such a clever baby, smiling at you already.

Did you have to fill in the 'Are you Suicidal' questionnaire?

I overdosed on Alan Davies last night (I think he's lovely), as The Brief was back on ITV and he was also on QI, which I had to tape for later viewing. Stephen Fry is someone I'd like to invite to a dinner party, just to listen to him talk. I loved the custard thing, but think they should have explained that you can't walk on cooked custard - it has to be the custard powder/water suspension. Still, sinking in a big vat of custard would be quite nice, as long as I got to eat some of it.

Got this week's House taped, too, so have that to look forward to.

I occasionally watch Supernanny, and other programmes of the same ilk, just to make myself feel better about how my two behave and that I am really not that bad a mother.

*hugs*

Cindy just said basically everything I was going to say--down to the Supernanny watching reasons. :)

I so envy you for being slim again already! You can't beat good genes.

We do have "public health nurses" in my state; my sister was one for a couple of years. There pretty much has to be something wrong though for their services to be required; Shelly worked with pregnant and parenting teenagers for example. Mostly they work in clinics though and do things like vacinations and making sure kids are growing...

Look! Hot Spuffy icon :)
It's interesting how you're feeling overwhelmed by the people who are only there to help. I expect if you just sit back and say 'It'll all be over soon' maybe that will help.
Good luck with the parental invasion - I hope it goes ok and they take lots of long walks...

Got this week's House taped
I hope I didn't spoil you - although I tried to be as vague as possible.

No you didn't, and I don't mind being spoiled anyway. :D
