I'm sure you've all heard about LJs latest round of fail. How do they do it? I mean, every single time, they get things just *spectacularly* wrong. ::shakes head:: ETA: [livejournal.com profile] news post here, if you want to know what's going on/complain. (I like the pingback thing though. That seems nifty.)

I guess it's fitting that #36 of s8 comes out today. Wtf-ery seeks wtf-ery. Am currently v. pleased that I never got a Facebook or signed up for Twitter.

Oh, and I almost forgot - if anyone wants a Dreamwidth invite, I've got a handful. (Not that I'm about to migrate, but...)

Yeah, today seems to be the DAY OF FAIL, where everyone is mad about everything.

I'm glad I finished up my manifesto because I could still do it without my squee being tainted. *sigh* My advice to everyone is to go read all the fics I recced! :D It'll make you feel better--I promise!

[identity profile] penny-lane-42.livejournal.com 2010-09-01 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I understand. But you're right--DW is nothing but happy right now! I am so glad I'm not a one-fandom kind of girl; I'd probably be endlessly depressed.

I know, right? Every decision they make seems designed to piss off their users. I don't get it.

I've reached the disengaged point (FINALLY!) and it feels great.

I haven't! But I'll have to check it out!

I look forward to the day when the critical mass is just right and everyone flees to Dreamwidth. It seems great to me, I just haven't gone over yet because I feel like there aren't quite enough people on the other side...

There's also sentimental value mixed up in there somewhere. I've had this account since 2004, and there are some very old entries locked to just me with glimpses of my obnoxious past self I can't let go of.

I'm afraid I've missed something--what is this evil that LJ hath wrought?

[identity profile] ladymercury-10.livejournal.com 2010-09-01 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I did see the news post, I just wasn't sure what about it was troublesome. Why anyone would want to cross-post comments is beyond me, and since I don't cross-post or lock posts (so far), I don't understand the mechanism by which it violates privacy. Thanks for the link, though. And yes, pingbacks are very nice!

I can see that...I guess I just don't understand the reason why this would be a good feature at all...maybe Twitter-izing LJ? Which seems like quite a bad idea indeed....

[identity profile] velara.livejournal.com 2010-09-01 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Seems a lil silly, all the kerfuffle. I looked at the settings. You still have to actually add your twitter and facebook info. Just cause you have them doesn't automatically connect it all. Alot of hoohah for nothing that big a deal imo.

There's a Greasemonkey script that'll get rid of it.

I go on vacation for A COUPLE OF DAYS and come back and have no idea what the heck is going on!

Am currently v. pleased that I never got a Facebook or signed up for Twitter.

I have yet to make a post on LJ that would fit on Twitter, so... I do actually have an account there but I haven't used it for anything other than reading a friend's posts a few times.

I do get the usefulness of duplicating a post. There are even a number of fandom folks who have an "offline friends" LJ who could find it handy to post both here and at Facebook. It is funny though, that now that Facebook use is actually ebbing away in their desired demographic they make it easier to post there!

But the comment thing? What sense does that make? And yes, it opens up a whopping big can of worms.

Oh, and I almost forgot - if anyone wants a Dreamwidth invite, I've got a handful. (Not that I'm about to migrate, but...)

I'll raise you by 20 on the invite front. All I can say is that LJ is obviously never thinking of fandom users when they do a lot of these things.

I do, however, also like the Pingbot idea. Especially because I tend to rec things well after I read or view them, I would welcome a way to notify all those recced that I've done so without having to go back and leave a message to that effect. I don't know of any fan creator who doesn't like knowing how people are coming across their work. What I don't understand is what happened to Pingbacks the "first" time -- why are they being brought back now?

Heh, even my comments are usually too wordy!

And tons of people crosspost from Dreamwidth (because you can't from LJ), why didn't they work on that?

Money, I'm sure. DW is a miniscule site compared to LJ (much less Facebook) and there's already a healthy number of people who use both sites. Yet I'd be willing to bet that in a random poll of LJ users maybe 1 out of 10 has heard of DW and maybe a quarter of those has gone so far as to look at it. Plus, as DW does not run ads there's no possible revenue to share there.

::nods a lot::

I know that one of the SPN rec communities has a policy of notifying individuals that they've been included in a post, but so far as I've seen they're the only ones. I can't help thinking that new LJ fandom people could also start tying into communities and other users more quickly by being able to follow how information gets distributed, though that probably won't happen because the notices are screened. It's hardly a new idea though, as most every blog out there has a trackback system which often links to other similar discussions.

I've left a complaint. What idiot ever thought it a good idea to allow crossposting of comments from a locked journal? Bloody stupid.

I am on DW and many more bits of f*ckwittery like this and I'll move there permanently.

[identity profile] poshcat.livejournal.com 2010-09-01 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Madness, I tell you! And all they would have had to do was not allow cross-posting on locked posts. Or just cross-posting on their own posts, not comments at all. So easy to fix. SIGH.

I wonder what the meeting was like where they came up with this "great" idea. All of them sitting around wondering how to make LJ users' lives "easier."

It's called privacy, people! Why does this concept escape you?
