Because my muse is refusing to co-operate, you get recs.

[livejournal.com profile] rm talks about why warning for slash is offensive.

Fic:

Just For Fun. Donna, Shaun, Eleven. Donna finds a way to make people (and herself) happy.

Minor Temporal Paradoxes. Eleven/River. The Doctor and River have a nice fireside chat and don't destroy the universe, well done them.

Various 'Amy's Choice' reviews that I liked:

5 excellent points/observations by [livejournal.com profile] cryptile (one of which made me laugh out loud).

Three thruths by [livejournal.com profile] honorh.

Excellent thoughts by [livejournal.com profile] selenak.

Happy thoughts by [livejournal.com profile] calapine.

Vid:

Half Life - Amy vid by [livejournal.com profile] big_n_happy. Dark, dense and multi-layered, and manages to be both a character vid and simultaneously deal with the themes of the season. Also, gorgeously made.

Personally, I think [livejournal.com profile] rm is wrong, although I think the word "warning" is a little extreme. I prefer "advisory."

When I read fic rated NC-17, I'm doing so *for the porn*. Ergo, I like to read fic that fits my kink. Slash, for whatever reason, does not float my boat, pitch my tent, turn me on, whatever euphemism one chooses. Not even IRL. I know this because I've tried.

So I strongly appreciate when an author advises me, in advance, whether or not their story is going to serve the purpose I like my NC-17 fic to serve.

I completely misunderstood her point, then, because I thought she was referring to "Spike/Angel" as being the warning.

I take it all back.

((Aaaaaaaghghgh!!! *makes sign to ward off evol eye* Out! Out! Damned Songfic!))

Heh. There was a huge discussion on [livejournal.com profile] fanficrants a while back about warning for slash - those who were in favour claimed that just because you used the word "warning" didn't mean you thought there was a negative connotation at all, that it's just a completely objective way of pointing out what's in the story that nobody should feel offended by in the least.

So someone replied "OK, fine, let's test that theory. If 'warning' doesn't have a negative connotation, I'm going to write Ianto/Lisa, warn for interracial relationship, and see if everyone agrees that it's just descriptive."

It took about 2 hours before people who hadn't seen the original thread were on [livejournal.com profile] fanficrants screaming for the writer's blood...

I see the author of the slash rant's point, but I think I disagree. I appreciate knowing that a fic is slash in advance to decide if I want to read. I'm not much of a slasher; it just doesn't do anything for me. I adore reading about say, Spike and Angel bickering. I really don't enjoy reading about them just having sex. And I love the Spike and Xander friendship fics I've read, but I'd rather claw my eyes out with a dull spoon than read spander. Even non graphically it's just a hyoooge squick. For the record that's not just an exclusively slash thing for me. I feel the same way about Buffy/Giles. Eww! And it saves time to know in advance; I can just avoid those stories!

I get the impression that it's more the value judgement implicit in the phrase "warning" that the author finds objectionable. Would calling it something other than "warning" solve that problem?
