Two must-read CoE recs.

Firstly, THIS FIC! (Title is spoilery.) It goes places I'd not thought possible, and does it without sentimentality, or any kind of fix-it. Incredible writing.

Second, THIS ESSAY. Children of Earth - Ethics, narrative structure, and [spoiler]. This is pretty much *exactly* the essay I would have written if I'd been able to get my thoughts into order.

And that's all for now. Summer holidays are TOO LONG!

I haven't seen Selenack's fic. Linkage??

I don't think loving a child and being a terrible parent are mutually exclusive things. I love jack to bits, but he would be a terrible father! Children need consistently, and they need security and those are two things Jack isn't capable of. Well, not at this point in his development anyway.

Thanks for the link; that story rocked. I already liked Alice (oddly enough the way she clearly doesn't trust jack hooked me) but this really fleshes her out.

We know jack/Face of Boe has children, but we don't know that he's a good father. I'd like to think he's grown and matured and become a better person than the grifter from season one of DW, but I'm not totally sure that the core of his personality has really changed. He's still ruthless, isn't he? He staves strangers in New New York, but I'll bet he'd still make the same choice and sacrifice his children. Very Isaak like, now that I think about it. I wonder if the biblical parallel is intentional? Or if I'm just reading too much into the story!
