Spike: Shadow Puppets #2
Not sure how this will turn out - v. scattered thoughts probably. This was another lovely issue, although I did have one (inevitable) problem. But let’s start from the beginning...
Do I need to say anything about Lorne's re-cap? It kinda speaks for itself... Although 'thanks to Numfar for making it all possible' is so tongue-in-cheek as to be almost criminal! *g*
p1. A horsey. And Spike’s therapy group! Including a floating green guy and a woman wearing a black hat w. a veil. Does anyone recognise them?
p3. I find it very interesting that Spike’s worst nightmare is (still!) ridicule. Please discuss if you like.
p6. And then Spike & Lorne get saved. ‘Vampire lemon face’ is such a brilliant turn of phrase that I’m kicking myself for never having thought of it.
p7. Pretty ninja girl likes handsome Spike muchly. Me like too. :) And...
p8. Beck! Wearing a lot more than last time we saw her! (But still with the same breast plate. Nice continuity.) And the cigarette! That Spike takes off her.. if ever anyone doubted the ‘he sees her as a little sister’ this should confirm it. Actually I love what Brian has done with her. In ‘Asylum’ she was emo!teen, and now she’s rebellious!teen (caring rebellious!teen). Which isn’t just nice character development, it also stops the character getting boring (*cough*Dawn*cough*). New issues good!
p9. Betta George! *cheers* Well if he’s going to turn up in ‘After The Fall’ (as is rumoured) he needs to be alive I guess (when *are* these stories set?). Also ‘I’m resurrected is all’ is great - ‘cause well, this is the Jossverse and characters get resurrected all the time. ;) (OK, so it’s totally cheap, but...) And ‘I heard it straight from the horse’s mouth’ is an irresistible line in all its silliness.
Plus it’s neat to see glimpses of the re-vamped asylum... think I missed the ‘Mosaic Rules’ banner on the first 5 read-throughs. But it really does look like a lovely place now - with a gym and everything. :)
p11-12. And the head on her pillow! *snickers* There’s a lot to be said for referencing the classics. And then... oh then we get to what is probably my favourite thing of all - Tok Shinobu. ‘Perchance I can be seduced, but never bought, handsome vampire.’ Also... ‘But you will refrain from any non-coital biting in my presence.’
*does the happy dance*
Now *this* is what I’ve been wanting for Spike. Warrior woman, completely self-contained and self-assured (and a bit bonkers too!), and as upfront about her attraction and sexuality as he. She could really be Spike’s Nina (you know what I mean). All of which is beautifully showcased on p12 in that delightful little knife display... ‘Heh, feel like a school boy.’
Sadly, I think the page is probably nigh on impossible to icon, but it would be *brilliant*. Maybe an animated banner? *muses* Because here we see why Spike’s been so out of luck (see waitress in issue 1) - he just wasn’t trying, since he wasn’t really interested. But now... How much do I fangirl Franco Urru? The shifts in expression are *perfect* and very subtle. Love it. It reminds me Spike & Faith in the basement - two people, fully aware of their power, playing games. So nicely done. Also reminds me of this:
Faith: No way are you prettier than me.
Wood: Little bit.
Since such is also the outcome of the Spike/Tok ‘attraction’ game. :)
(Actually this might be perfect for an icon? Animated of course... *whistles innocently and pushes towards icon makers*)
p14. Strings! And Evil!Pinocchio. Heh.
ETA: p17. Interesting little panel of our evil puppets:
[big alarm goes off]
Marco: Crap, now?
Fauna: Should we hold this off?
Marco: Dammit, we don't have time to "hold off," Fauna. Just do it.
What are they doing??? It looks like open puppet surgery... Hmmmm.
p18. ‘"Sod". Lass has a serious case of anti hero worship.’ Great line. And also stops Beck running around after him ‘making mooneyes’ (although she is obviously crushing on him).
p19-22. Apparently poor Framkin is still around... I hope this will be addressed. Anyway, then it turns into ‘Smile Time’ Take 2 - right down to the boxes - which is necessary, I know, since we need to puppet-ize Spike, but still makes me want to see something new. Ah well, I’m sure next issue will deliver. And this is a wonderful line:
Lorne: ‘I feel as though I should be on a lilly pad with a banjo. Is that weird?’
Actually ‘Gepetto’s workshop’ earlier on was a great shout-out to Lorne carrying an injured Puppet!Angel in his arms (‘Is there a Gepetto in the house?’). And having *two* puppets really is great. I wonder how having someone else to bond with will change things - or not. Spike isn’t the best at bonding.
And there needs to be Puppet!Spike/Puppet!Angel slash. A little time travel or something... very simple. Just have to make sure that they ‘have something going on between the legs’! *g* (Which reminds me of the talking Krusty the Klown doll: ‘I’m anatomically correct! Go on - take a peek!’ If you have not seen that ep. of The Simpsons, then shame on you!)
So... not a lot of non-shippy thoughts, sorry. But then shipping is a perfectly valid way of reading, right? :)
Actually, it kinda ties in with one of the things about writing fanfic - how it's made easier because the writer counts on the reader being familiar with the characters already. See f.ex. I might just borrow Rene from S8 if I ever need to give Xander a girlfriend, because it would be a lot easier than to invent an OC and spend time introducing her. Ditto here with Tok Shinobu - she's perfect for Spike, and if Buffy gets to have The Immortal... Everyone needs an 'orgasm friend', right? *g*

Also, I think there won't be two puppets but three. George was in the line of fire as well.
And I loved Spike's, "Give me that!" when Beck lights a cigarette. It was so season 5 Spike/Dawn-ish.

SQUEE! [more dancing]
It was so season 5 Spike/Dawn-ish.
My thoughts exactly. Although at least Tok isn't as clueless as Buffy was... *g*
Oh it's so *nice* to have something fun to read. :)

I was all squeed out with excitement over Angel: After the Fall all weekend. Then I got worried because of what Joss said at the Comics Con about Illyria being his favourite character in AtS and the best thing to happen in season 5.
It just reminded me all over again how different his priorities and mine are. Now I have horrid visions of Illyria taking over After the Fall, like she'd have taken over that Spike movie if it had ever happened.
Hopefully, however, someone will offer Joss lots of money to make his Goners film and he'll be too busy with that to oversee After the Fall and Brian can be left in peace.

Hmmm... well I'd certainly not mind exploring her character more, since she was only in so few episodes. Just look at what
"I must say, I'm writing who or what the story needs. It's not about favorites at all, it's about telling the best story we can."
Which is a v. good sign! :)
And yes, it sounds like Joss has an awful lot on his plate...

Yeah, I'm clinging to that.

Do you have any idea why Uro dressed the folks in the bar like Angel and Wes. I know this is in a post NFA world (hence Wes is dead), and I didn't even notice it until I saw someone complaining about Angel in this issue. I was all WTF until I noticed the clothes on the two guys on that page. Have you seen commentary/ explanation of that anywhere.
I actually loved Spike's commentary at the end. He's making all these statements about the puppets, Smile Time and Angel while the reader is actually 'in the know'. Then:"I guess Angel did have to deal with the giant laser egg" Why yes, Spike, yes he did. *snicker*
Puppet slash...yeah, 5am is too early to ponder that except to giggle. And now I am off to work. Have a good one.
no subject
Brian has explained that he asked Franco to draw Angel as a handsome high-school jock - the type who'd kick sand in your face etc - because that was how Spike was imagining him (ie. distorted).
no subject
I went back and looked and yes, all three of them were in the line of fire... ::much glee:: (And I would *totally* buy a Betta George puppet for my toddler. And one for me! *g*)
Have you seen commentary/ explanation of that anywhere.
I recognised them straight away, but from Mr Lynch's own mouth (speaking of Urru's work):
"So far I've only see a quick appearance of Angel, Wes and Illyria in SPIKE:SHADOW PUPPETS #2, and they weren't really Angel and company, they were all in Spike's version of them. Angel was dashing and young and high school jockish, Wesley was kinda nebbish and Illyria was...playing in the background."
(from this interview)
Why yes, Spike, yes he did. *snicker*
Yup, great line. :)
Puppet slash...yeah, 5am is too early to ponder that except to giggle.
Well at least Spike will be able to tell us if he's got any equipment...
Have a lovely day! :)

But doesn't Shadow Puppets take place after Auld Lang Syne which takes place after Asylum which takes place after NFA?? So wouldn't Wes be, you know, dead?
This makes my brain hurt. I think I liked my original idea of two random people in a bar with Illyria lurking behind them better. Because I don't care for that idea of how Spike views Angel at all. It seems to run contrary to everything else Spike has said about how he views himself in relation to Angel.
Or maybe I am thinking too hard, but dammit it's Angel. *pouts*
no subject
Heh. Read this thread. I *thought* it was all post-NFA, but apparently it's not. To quote Brian himself:
Spike’s got a whole other life that viewers of ANGEL didn’t know about. While we’re not clear as to when SHADOW PUPPETS takes place, I thought it would be fun to establish that he’s got these series of adventures going on that no one else in the ANGEL world is aware of.
So, it's squishes into S5 somewhere. Which does make a lot more sense, characterwise.
As for how Spike views Angel, then Spike would find it hysterically funny if Angel died by ninja puppet dog-pile. Sad, yes, but he'd still find it funny. Ergo, he thinks that's what Angel would think of *him*.
no subject
Seriously? Huh. Now I'm confused. I mean, I'd been assuming post-NFA too. If it's during S5 ... well, my first question would be when was there time for all this to happen, but I guess there's conceivably a months-long gap between some episodes. But then, why is Lorne off doing his own thing instead of hanging out at W&H?
no subject
That really is the biggest question I think. Maybe he took a holiday? Anyway, once you get used to the idea it almost-sorta works.
Also of course they're only comic books and therefore not canon. Look on them as FitBs that add to Spike's growth in S5, and they fit rather neatly. (See that's always what it comes down to for me - if it works *emotionally* I have no problem with ret-cons and stuff like that.)
As for time, then *Spike* was often not around all that much in S5, and Asylum f.ex. didn't actually take all that long timewise.
no subject

Yes, after I posted my comment I read the rest of the discussion to the post, and it does almost makes sense; Lorne's Vegas gig is the stickiest point, I think.
if it works *emotionally* I have no problem with ret-cons and stuff like that.
I'm just a bit more narrow-minded, I guess, about timelines—though in the end, for the emotional payoff, I'll accept it. :)
no subject
You make me feel so knowledgable! (I had to ask too, back when I first came across it) 'Fill-in-the-Blank' - story that slots into canon, rather than AU.

It is. But that is why fanwank exists... *g*

Well I'm not about to think that Spike actually had another flat and double life next time I watch S5 - but it certainly makes for fun reading. Comics shiny - me happy! :)

Hee! Well I've loved comics ever since I was little, so for me the surprise comes more from enjoying offical Buffy tie-ins. And I still doubt I'll ever buy a tie-in novel.

Clearly after Illyria and his team-up with Angel to help Fred. Because we get a picture of Fred as Illyria and a mention of the big vampire team-up.
My guess? Sometime after Underneath and before Girl in Question. Aslym took place four months ago - so it may have been before Smile Time.
And Shadow Puppets takes after Underneath. That's my guess.
Agree - this issue was kick-ass. Am loving the Brian Lynch/Urru Spike comics. Can't wait to see what they do with Angel S6 - with Whedon overseeing.
no subject
Those are good, but it still kinda jars. I always saw them as post-NFA stories, but now I think they just occupy some sort of murky grey area between 'in-show' and 'completely AU'. If they get ret-conned to canon status in 'After The Fall' it'll be an awkward fit... but then considering what Joss has done with S8, it's really not that bad!
Agree - this issue was kick-ass.
It didn't blow me away on first read-through, but the more I re-read, the more I liked. :)
Can't wait to see what they do with Angel S6
Same here!

How?
There's two brief bits. The first is Lorne - Spike easily finds him in Vegas, which would not have happened post NFA, nor do I believe that Lorne would have helped him. But you can argue against that.
The second bit? Wesely is clearly still alive when Shadow Puppets takes place. Spike imagines Angel and Wesely and Illyria making fun of him.
Post NFA - he would not have imagined that.
And finally? IDW has said that they do not have permission to do any post NFA stories right now. So all the Spike stories and Angel ones must take place pre-NFA. Odd, considering Angel/Spike Old Lyne Syne felt like it happened post NFA, but that's what everyone working on the comics keeps saying.
Oh - Lynch also stated in an interview that Shadow Puppets takes place prior to NFA. Not that it is canon from his perspective. (Personally I don't think it is possible for a comic to share the same canon as a tv series...but that's my own opinion.)
So - it takes place before. Also makes more sense that it does in a way.
There's a few things in the comic that hit at that - Spike's second apartment that he has told no one about - and is in LA. His Angel Cards - that he clearly got the idea from Lindsey. And he appears to be in an emotional place that is different from where he's at in NFA - it's almost as if Lynch is filling in some of the gaps in Spike's arc and doing a brilliant job of it.
no subject
Both excellent points, and ones that I have considered myself. Although when Lorne would have found time in his busy schedule to run off to Vegas to do three shows a day I don't know. But it can be fanwanked, I'm sure... also unlikely is Spike setting up a detective agency and extra flat without anyone at W&H noticing, but it would explain what kept him occupied.
And finally? IDW has said that they do not have permission to do any post NFA stories right now.
Huh.
And he appears to be in an emotional place that is different from where he's at in NFA - it's almost as if Lynch is filling in some of the gaps in Spike's arc and doing a brilliant job of it.
This is definitely the most compelling argument for me - if something *feels* right and really, truly works, I'll happily fanwank/ret-con any and everything that might need it. FitBs they shall become.
Personally I don't think it is possible for a comic to share the same canon as a tv series...but that's my own opinion.
Oh we're on the same page there. Comics are like extra shiny fanfic in my world. But canon is what's on screen, end of story. What comics *do* give people though, is added material for fanfic, which is never a bad thing. :)

(Anonymous) 2007-07-30 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)Apparently - IDW and Dark Horse were told by FOx,ME and Whedon that they could do whatever they wanted with the characters prior to the episodes "Chosen" and "Not Fade Away" but were not permitted to write any stories about them post that period without flying them by Whedon first.
The reason was simple - Whedon gets first crack at whatever happens after those two episodes. From their perspective the comics could be considered canon and could influence the universe, I guess. Never really understood the restriction. But I knew all the IDW Angel comics were more or less pre-Not Fade Away because of it.
There may be a few that were let out - but only with the strict caveat that they are NOT canon or AU. Anything prior? Could be considered canon by these guys.
I agree with you - where Spike found the time to get locked up in Mosaic and Lorne found the time to do Vegas...I don't know. But Angel S5 was never very clear on when stuff was taking place either. Girl in Question appears to have taken place at least a month or two before Powerplay, but I'm not certain.
And like you said - you can fanwank it without too much trouble. Makes more sense to me that Shadow Puppets and Asylm took place prior to NFA than after, both character arc wise and action wise. Lynch may tell us in Angel After the Fall - whether they did and if they should be considered "comics canon" in the series.
(I'm calling it "comics canon" since it separates it from tv canon.)
The most telling argument for me is that Wesley is still alive in Spike's nightmare vision. That just isn't a possibility after NFA. Also they are chatting at WRH in the vision.
no subject
Makes sense. They're allowed to go sideways, but not forward. *g*
Girl in Question appears to have taken place at least a month or two before Powerplay, but I'm not certain.
Yes, there's a big gap there. Or post-'Time Bomb' at least. TGiQ kinda lives in its own little bubble.
Makes more sense to me that Shadow Puppets and Asylm took place prior to NFA than after, both character arc wise and action wise.
Same here. So although it makes it a little awkward to squish them in, I can do it without too much trouble. It's sorta the opposite problem to S8 - rather than being told 'Oh btw Dawn sees Willow as a mom even though there was never a hint of it on the show', we have an awful lot of extra stuff that was never referenced. And - as you say - it might be 'comics canon', which is different from tv canon.

Also I can't say how much I loved Beck in this issue. What a great character development, I agree. And she's not just a rebellious!teen, she's also copying Spike in everything - from the coat to a cigarette to the language. She's playing it tough, but that detail also shows her sweet and screwed up side. She's crushing on Spike and that's cute and funny, but that also helps her to rediscover zest for life, to make peace with her demon side. I dig her new clothes so much - especially when we compare them to clothes Buffy and Co are wearing. Her clothes show a girl enjoying life, proud of her powers. Buffy's clothes show a woman who doesn't care much about that stuff anymore.
Didn't care much for Tok - yet. I thought she was too perfectly engineered to be a fit for Spike, and too forced as a new romantic interest. Reminded me of Riley a bit. But I'm ready to like her more in the next issues.
As for where those stories fit - they didn't feel post-NFA for me from the beginning, because by NFA Spike had outgrown those Angel/confidence issues. Asylum would be a great fit into Lindsey period: couple of weeks passed between Soul Purpose and Damage when Spike was doing hero stuff we knew nothing about. This one is harder to place - but I'd put it btw Underneath and Time Bomb. As Gunn is absent. And I doubt Spike would be having such thoughts about Angel after Angel saved Spike in Time Bomb. It does seem like Angel-5 AU, and that grates me some. It would take so little to fit it into canon properly - like take Illyria out in #2 and that would fit much better btw Smile Time and Hole in the World.

I remember something about bonding, yes. That could be *great*! :)
As for whatever goes between his wee puppet legs - I'm afraid it's nothing.
Heh. There are a lot of 'no's, it's true. *g*
But I think we'll find out soon enough, when Tok gets her hands on wee puppet him. :)
I can't wait!!!!
And she's not just a rebellious!teen, she's also copying Spike in everything - from the coat to a cigarette to the language.
It's *fabulous*! And unlike Andrew, whom Spike of course can't stand, Beck is someone Spike cares about, and seeing himself thus reflected might make him think. I approve!
She's crushing on Spike and that's cute and funny, but that also helps her to rediscover zest for life, to make peace with her demon side.
::much nodding::
I dig her new clothes so much - especially when we compare them to clothes Buffy and Co are wearing.
Oh yes! And for some reason I adore the fact that her coat is apparently quilted on the inside. Such a lovely little touch, and stops it being a total clone of Spike's.
I thought she was too perfectly engineered to be a fit for Spike, and too forced as a new romantic interest.
Oh I know, but still... I just loved their dynamic far too much to care. I think the difference from say Riley is that she isn't *perfect* - she's perfect for Spike. Right down to being a bit insane. Also I like the fact that her clothes are simple and practical, yet flattering. And don't show an ounce of flesh. (We'll probably get the gratuitous naked bath scene in the next issue, but hey - we had plenty of nekkid!Spike in Asylum, so I'm not about to complain.)
And I doubt Spike would be having such thoughts about Angel after Angel saved Spike in Time Bomb.
But did Spike realise what happened in 'Time Bomb'? Anyway, it's just a comic book...
no subject
Me too! Franco's a genius, as genius is in the detail. You can tell she's having fun with her coat. :) And I love how Beck hangs out with Tok - you can feel she's excited to hang out with such a cool chick as an equal. And when Spike and Lorne join in - they all are such an endearing group of misfits, again.
Tok - yeah, she's such a fanfic character but I'm still glad that Spike is getting some love. And yay for puppet petting which is to come (I hope) :)
As for Time Bomb - hmm, things were happening fast there, but still - Spike was pushed out of the way by Angel and then Illyria tried to stake Angel, and Spike saw all of that. Spike maybe didn't realize that he was about to be dusted. But he did realize that Angel was protecting him.
no subject
Indeed. I did one read-through where all I did was look at the backgrounds/details. 'Cause I knew there was stuff to be found.
You can tell she's having fun with her coat. :)
Oh yes! And she got the same boots w. straps and jeans tucked inside that Spike used to wear. It's wonderful!
you can feel she's excited to hang out with such a cool chick as an equal.
Oh yes - and much more fun than all the potentials - so far anyway.
And yay for puppet petting which is to come (I hope) :)
I am praying for a way that could happen. And he still has fangs...
But he did realize that Angel was protecting him.
That is true. Anyway, it's all hypothetical...

Have you by any chance ever seen
Personally, I'm waiting for someone to write me some puppet!Spike/puppet!Lorne. And George can watch if he wants ;)
(also, have you seen the preview pages for the next issue? - I haven't been a huge fan of Urru before, but O.M.G. puppet!Spike is so cute!)
And I'm enjoying reading your reviews. Before the first issue of Shadows Puppets came out, I made a decision that I would be fair and write similar reviews of every issue that I've been writing of S8, because I do have some minor quarrels with both Asylum and Puppets. But then every time I try to write something, all I can come up is "Wheeee!" because the damn things are just so much fun.
Speaking of S8, I'm still trying to decide if I liked issue 5 or not - I really want to like it, but... Augh!
no subject
OMG!!!!! I knew she'd made puppets and seen a few images around (I have a puppet!spangel banner in a folder somewhere), but somehow have managed not to see those pictures before. Too brilliant! *loves*
also, have you seen the preview pages for the next issue?
Nope. I am spoiler free! *polishes halo* (But I believe you - easily!)
But then every time I try to write something, all I can come up is "Wheeee!" because the damn things are just so much fun.
Also they don't have pretensions of canonicity... save your reviews for 'After The Fall'. :)

Heh. Did you see my post the other day? I thought it was perfectly nice and good, but unless underground!Buffy's story somehow impacts on the main story, it strikes me as kinda superflous. A little reflection upon Slayerness... *shrugs* What I *did* like however was the preview for issue 6. I already care more about Faith than anything else s8 has done! ::is cautiously optimistic::

"Oh man, I messed up the timeline a bit. See, Trots came right after Spike left Mosaic, not right before. Yikes. Let's just assume Lorne was getting it wrong, and ASYLUM took place 6 months before SHADOW PUPPETS."
I couldn't find his quote about both Asylum and Shadow Puppets being before NFA, but I definitely remember reading it... And now we know the two stories are set 6 months apart.

PAGE 12 Panel 4: I just want to point out that before the dialog was added, this panel looked really homoerotic. Sporne fanfiction, anyone?

I don't really - I never got the hang of forums, and I can barely keep up with LJ. So I count on other people to point me in the direction of the interesting stuff. :)

From other comments on this thread it would seem that it is definitely set during S5 sometime - it's a bit of an awkward fit, but then characterwise it makes a lot more sense. And hey - it's just a comic.

Ooooh thank you! I knew he did these for Asylum, and was wondering about SP. Brilliant. Loved it - esp. the bit about the cards.

I have great faith in Brian as a writer, even more then Joss these days, sadly. So to know he's one of the people working on Angel season 6, makes me feel a little happier. Well happier then if it had just been Joss on his own!

As I keep saying, it is like extra shiny fic. And that there can not be enough of! (And having just seen your puppet pictures, I must express my profound love and admiration!)

Same here! I am very excited about it, so it'd better be good! *prays*
