Much goodness! :)
First of all Happy Birthday
fraidycatx3! Hope you have a wonderful day! *hugs*
Then there is this Comic Con report (spoilers for s8), wherein we learn that 'Ripper' will happen! *does happy dance*
The most exciting news of all: Ripper is in effect! Ripper is the long-discussed story of Giles (Anthony Stewart Head) pre-Buffy. Who knows whether or not this plot will stay the same, but Head is on board as is the BBC, which is planning to film the story as one 90 minute TV movie.
Also there is a black-and-white preview of issue 6 of S8. And... if I hadn't read that stupid summary I'd be really excited. Because it looks *great* and - most shocking of all! - Jeanty's Faith looks like Faith. *is stunned*
But - it is Sunday morning and I have children to sort out. Still - it is a *good* morning, because the sky is blue and the sun is shining. It actually looks like summer.
See you all later, and I'll post my (rather shallow) 'Shadow Puppets 2' thoughts tomorrow! :)

It seems to me that after being forced to kill a whole bunch of vampiric toddlers, Faith would be suffering some serious Slayer burnout and be looking forward to "retiring" - if not permanently, at least for a bit.
The bit I liked best was the way she referred to Robin as "her ex". :-) (But was still on friendly terms with him, which is a new experience for her...) Plus it's now actual canon rather than assumption and inference that her mother was an alcoholic.

I'd say it's exactly as much canon as it's been since "Enemies"; it's her abuse of Faith that's still mostly inferred.
"But Mom was so busy, you know, enjoying the drinking-and-passing-out parts of life, that I never really got what I wanted, until now."
But yeah, the first pages look *really* good. Hard-hitting, in character (both personality- and looks-wise) and says a lot with very little. I still say the plot sounds... let's say "unfortunate", but we'll see where it goes.

I'll only believe it when I see it. Maybe when a script has been written and they've started filming it! Until then I'll take it with a pinch of salt. :)

I'm glad I decided not to give up on BtVS season 8 just yet.
Also, according to someone who was at Comic Con, Joss never said that Ripper would be a prequel to BtVS. How could it be with ASH looking so much older?

Yay for summer - hope you get some more :)

And Ripper - I can't believe it's really happening, new Angel, new Buffy, and now this!

I think it might be more a case of being fed of of doing all the 'dirty work' - it seems as though the new slayer organisation is rather rigid ("You don't have a choice", Underground!Buffy), so getting out might be a welcome relief. Hey - she could cross over to Angel! *is insanely hopeful*

Very nicely done. A lot of background info in a v. short space of time.

As if the BBC will pass up a chance to work with Joss... *g*

Seeing is believing. And this is *so* much better than the Buffy stuff...

I did wonder about that... guess we'll have to wait and see.

It will indeed... *is hopeful*

It's been around 9/10 rain so far... ::needs sunshine::

I was very impressed (even though I *like* Wood!). But it does look v. good.
new Angel, new Buffy, and now this
Well it's not happened yet, but I'd say it is a lot more promising than the Spike movie (RIP).

My thoughts exactly. This is much more along the lines of what I was expecting/hoping for, so as long as the story doesn't go wrong... *crosses fingers*
(I already care about this Faith. And I've yet to care about S8 Buffy.)

The weather is co-operating. It's a bright hot sunny day here. What more could a girl ask for?

IOW, meet the new boss, same as the old boss. If Joss would explore that, things might get interesting.

I think that’s reading the statement out of context and over literally. That “You don't get a choice” is true but “there is no truth” and unlike original Buffy she wasn’t sought out by the representative of an organization of non-combatants. She chose to call 1-800-CHOSEN, she chose to go back to fight with the creature-freakys she recruited to the cause. I think the nuance here is that not that you don’t get a choice but that you don’t get to choose who you are. It’s like the ambiguity inherent in the title. A 'Chain' is what binds, the original Slayer was chained to the earth, and a 'Chain' is what connects, this slayer was never alone. Which is why I think it’s crucial to the story that the cavalry does come even if not soon enough to save everyone’s day.

I agree. Like I said on my own journal to beer_good_foamy, saying "you don't get a choice" isn't a statement on the rigidity (or otherwise) of the Slayer network, it's a reprise of this from 'Becoming 1':
"Bottom line is even if you see 'em coming, you're not ready for the big moments. No one asks for their life to change, not really. But it does.
"So, what, are we helpless? Puppets? No. The big moments are gonna come, can't help that. It's what you do afterwards that counts. That's when you find out who you are."
The heroine of this episode chose to go on her mission - Rona was describing it in the conditional tense ("you'd have to", not "you'll have to"). She could have walked away any time she wanted, assuming she could have lived with her conscience afterwards.

Heh. I was waiting for someone to say something! And yes, that statement was re. 'becoming a slayer', not the work...
But, I think the topic was Faith's 'retirement' and the fact that being used to do all the dirty work might be getting to her. (Because that's the impression we get from those few pages, as well as the 'she has to kill a Slayer'.) The Watchers as manipulative bastards is something I wouldn't mind exploring... and then Faith could go work with Angel instead. He ought to understand how she feels. (See? I'm talking myself into liking it!)

Can't think of anything - it sounds wonderful! *hugs*

I just can't see Faith deciding that she is 'redeemed' after a few years of doing good work. It's a day-by-day thing, like being an alcoholic...
the Watchers and other Slayers taking that self-projection at face value.
Yes, but is she really *like* that any more? From what I remember of her in AtS s4/S7, she was a lot more mature and calm. Up for a good time if necessary, but nowhere near her wild days in S3...
bonding with Angel over Daddy's manpain are places they've been to so many times,
Oh but Angel has been doing exactly what Giles might be planning - using people ruthlessly. Having Lorne kill Lindsey f.ex. So it might be a lot more complex...
They could both be learning something.
Here's to hoping!

As pointed out at the time, killing demons with her bare hands isn’t the only type of good work Faith is capable of, as metaphors go, she doesn’t have to get a day-by-day job in a bar.
Up for a good time if necessary, but nowhere near her wild days in S3...
I think the issues she has now are more class related. The lack of education, which came up before anything else did on her first night with Robin, and the tendency to see herself as hard as in “well ‘ard.” Street-hardened, able to take on the dirty jobs the young and innocent balk at because she’s already soiled goods, been there done that, can’t be fazed. She has trouble believing she can be ‘the good Slayer’ and she’s still scared of letting people down should they ever get the notion that she’s worth looking up to.
Oh but Angel has been doing exactly what Giles might be planning - using people ruthlessly. Having Lorne kill Lindsey f.ex. So it might be a lot more complex...
Or all about Angel. Again. I’m sorry but it would take an awful lot to get me interested in the Angel and/or Spike show. I’m just hoping Joss’s interest in Illyria and possibly Dead!Wesley can save the book.

Very true. Guess we'll have to wait and see though...

I see what you mean. Well I'm impressed with the preview, so maybe it'll turn out OK...
Or all about Angel. Again.
Well duh - it's his show! ;) Anyway, I sincerely doubt she'll cross over, so it's all just wild speculation.
I’m just hoping Joss’s interest in Illyria and possibly Dead!Wesley can save the book.
'Save it'? Oooh, we're right at opposite ends. Not that I wouldn't *adore* seeing Wes or Illyria (or Gunn or Lorne or Spike etc.) explored, but it *ought* to be Angel's story, first and foremost. Or to quote Brian himself, talking about ATS:
BL: What I love most about the show is it's a big epic good-vs-evil adventure, but it's told in a way that's highly personal. The action is great and mythology is staggeringly thought-out and impressive, but strip all that away and it's a very tightly constructed, pitch-perfect character story. Actually, it's five or six character stories, as each lead in ANGEL has so much going on they could carry their own series.
That's what I'm expecting, but obviously somewhat lessened because of the format.
