The End of Star Wars and the Rise of Dune; Archetypal Analysis
^This is really good. (With thanks to Proton <3) Is it depressing that the story we need right now is basically without the possibility of a happy ending (except in the far far distant future)? Yes. But also it feels necessary. The world is bleak. I want hope, but I also want realism. Naive fairy tales with a simplistic happily ever after are inadequate.
Also, the video digs into how the different 'verses look at the causes of evil, which is v interesting.

Life has just... vanished recently. Entirely forgot to post a link when I posted this:
Chapter 20: Life is Just This (Almost 9k. /o\)

And hey, here is a fabulous trio of stories. I had read the first one, but not the two follow ups.
~
ETA: I also meant to say that we have started to watch Stacey Solomon: Sort Your Life Out, which is perfect TV for when you need something not complicated, but nice and uplifting. It's also caused us to finally clear stuff out that we have been meaning to do for YEARS (and which is now more possible with two children moved out for good), so that is a positive.

I love it, but am still... coalescing my thoughts, if that makes sense. I've absorbed a lot of Tumblr posts and will hopefully be able to formulate actual thoughts at some point.
I also need to watch it again.

Never been tempted to go back, and always believed that, since all the stuff that made it interesting at all was in the notes (that were probably far less prevalent than they actually were) I wasn't interested in any onscreen versions.
I'm actually of the opinion that Frank Herbert was over-rated.
Seems perfect for modern cinema audience therefore.
Realised somewhere between the first news of episode eight of STar Wars and the release of episode nine that, despite finding a great deal to like in Star Wars, I had never been a true fan.
There's only three of the movies, and none of the other material, that I am interested in rewatching regularly, or at all really, Rogue One; The Force Awakens and The Empire Strikes Back.
I recall really wanted to see Luke tempted to the dark side; then saved by Leia. I had no interest in Vader being redeemed and believe to this day his and the 'pinhead incel' as I overheard some girl calling whatsisname from the final trilogy 'redemption arcs were horrible and undeserved. Not too dissimilar to the reasons why I hated the fact that Buffy fans, or too many of them, were obsessed with which serial killing handsome vampire she ended up with.
And then would demand Amy's death and forgive Willow at every turn.
Fave SW characters (not in order): Maz Kanata followed by Rey; Jyn Erso; Maze & Chirrut; K2SO; Chewbacca; Rose Tico; General Leia; Jar Jar; Finn; Poe... and I can't think of any others.
There's a wonderful Korean SF movie that I really have to send you one day. Hits everything mainstream Hollywood has been producing out of the park.

'desert vampire' - LOL
Austin Butler was amazing, I hope he gets some recognition after being overlooked when it came to Elvis.
Very much agreed. What a performance.

Ooof. Well, I shall disagree and say that I think the book is complex and interesting, and so are the new movies. The main thing, right now, being that the heart of the story (apart from the worms etc etc) is that it's a warning against charismatic leaders. The story starts like what would seem to be [yet another] white saviour narrative, except the saviour ends up just yet another colonizer. (He tries to fight against it, but that's how the world is set up.) Anyway, it's a good warning.
Apart from that the world building is second to none and these movies do amazing things with cinematography & imagery etc etc.
It's The Lord of the Rings of sci-fi, and it shows. :)

WELL. That means that you are a true fan. ;) (There was this very tongue-in-cheek post that talked about how Star Wars fans didn't like anything about Star Wars, but the idea... the idea they love.)

I can see it. Although it's different with the vampires, what with the souls and so on. Anakin still had his soul when he did all his murdering.
And then would demand Amy's death and forgive Willow at every turn.
Yeah, I hear ya. :(

Good choices!

Looking forward. Sci-fi should be different, not predicable!

Someone once pointed out; they've passed away now, that the only true hero of the story is Sam; remember too little of Dune to know whether it had a 'Sam' but, and I say this not having seen an actual episode, Game of Thrones true hero is a Sam too; Samwell Tarly.
I'd argue there's also the ten year old Lady Mormont; Hodor and even Theon Greyjoy, but then I'd realise the true heros are the ones who lay their lives on the line; survive everything heaven & hell throws at them and then live in the purgatory of the rest of their lives in ordinariness, while the world slowly forgets the sacrifice and why it was needed.
Buffy had a Sam; as much as I didn't like him too well on the show, his name was Xander.

At least, that's the impression I had from watching the film.

I had never thought of it in vampire terms. That is fascinating!

Yes there is a clearer 'break' in the movies than in the book - which makes sense. The movie can't have ten pages of introspection. *g*

I almost mentioned the LotR appendices & extra stories. :)

Oh yes, Sam is definitely the biggest hero. AND manages to fight the lure of the ring. Have only read the first 3 GoT books, but very much agreed on Samwell Tarly. (I have a feeling the name was intentional.)

I wouldn't call it a purgatory. They don't care about glory or about people honouring them. Living in peace is what they want.

Hm. Xander wasn't a Sam. He just sometimes stepped in to fill the role, but he didn't have the steadfast, kind loyalty.

Honestly hadn't thought of that but Martin's stories are much darker and much, much more violent than Tolkien's; and so much more grey morally; I have to had apparently as I haven't read the books either.
* I have to mention my point of dispute; not sure which group of fans with, in that it's only after the 'Battle with the Dead' that everything appears to get ~ I shall say absurd ~ so much utter ridiculousness in those last too episodes. I thought; with a lot more pre-knowledge than actual fans that Daenarys' insanity was much more obvious, and a lot of very smart characters were in denial of it, right from her first scenes. Bran's journey was much more of a journey; but while we may never know who Martin would actually have had sit on that damned ~ it a much more old-fashioned usage of the word ~ throne, the confusion over his arse being there is mine too.
* As an aside the idea of electing your king played a very prominent role in the downfall of Lithuanian / Polish Commonwealth as I recall.
As to Xander; you're right he's not like Samwell or Sam, but he does, kind of, represent that kind character in the Buffyverse; as does Cordelia really. Makes me remember too that, when she got the vision powers, she kind of picked up / put on the ring as Sam did. Xander & Cordelia are almost a mirror of each other, as Bran and Daenarys are in Game of Thrones; as The Fellowship & the Ring Wraiths are in Lord of the Rings.

Game of Thrones draws on the War of the Roses I believe. And yeah, it's a lot less magical. Not that it doesn't have its moments, but it's a different thing.

I have only ever followed from a distance, so I know the fallout. I wonder if/when Martin finishes the books there will be a better/less rushed/arc.

LOL. I'm just glad that Sansa got to be the Queen of the North. She deserved it.

Your history is clearly superior than mine! Although the Swedes did better when picking Bernadotte. (Whom I know of, because Désirée is one of my favourite novels.)

Oh yes, he fills the role. But he lacks the character traits, if that makes sense.

Hm. Yes and no, since she couldn't really misuse the powers. But I get what you mean.

I genuinely don't know what you mean, please explain?
