The most amusing thing of this whole 'SHINY NEW DOCTOR EVERYONE IS EXCITED' is scrolling through Twitter and seeing all the people deciding they want to get back to the show, but have heard it's rubbish now, and receiving endless reassurances that 'RTD Is Coming Back, Everything Is Going To Be Amazing Again' and just...
*hands*
I REMEMBER LAST TIME. Fandom hated him. Moffat might as well have been the Second Coming. I wonder how long it'll take for things to turn again. (Not that he cares. *g*)
~~~
ANYWAY. If anyone is missing Moffat Who, and timey-wimey shenanigans, they should watch Russian Doll. We finished S2 last week and I'm beginning to recover. Darcy described it as 'Catharsis in a Rubik's Cube', which is absolutely spot-on and genius.
Stay far far away from spoilers, just jump in. It's clever and smart and has awesome female characters and there is zero hand holding.
Oh and S2 might make you cry. It might not seem like it, because there is a LOT going on, but once you realise what it's actually doing it's packs a punch (softly, beautifully).
Warning: The whole thing is basically about trauma (childhood/inter-generational), so please be aware in case that's a trigger. ♥
~~~
ETA: Tumblr is reading Dracula (it's a thing where you get emailed a bit every day? Because the book is mostly in a diary format). It's hilarious! Tumblr + Dracula = pure delight

Gah.
I mean, I was hoping for another woman, but this guy has acting street cred, as I understand it, and I love that he's yet another Scottish guy in the role. Scottish by way of Rwanda, but still ... Scottish.

Clearly you hang out in different spaces to me. Or the tones changed after I logged off...
Eh, let them moan. RTD will laugh at them.

Oh yeah, greeeeeeat choice. Love him in Sex Education, can absolutely see why they chose him!

Do you mean that there hasn't been blowback in your neck of the Internet fandom woods? That would be cool. I wasn't hanging out anywhere; just figuring that the usual white boy panic would explode into full-fledged "the world is ending" anti-woke misery.

Re. the wider fandom, then I don't go near Gallifrey Base or anything like that. However I spent WAY too long scrolling through Twitter, and the response was overwhelmingly positive, which was nice.

You and me both!
I should check Twitter; it might prove a less fraught journey than my usual Twitter routes (American politics and the abortion fight).
My Twitter is... hm. Politics (both UK and US) and Trans issues. So yeah, this is far less fraught!
Positive Twitter? That would be a relief!
It was crazy! If you go to my previous post and follow the announcement tweet, you can scroll for days and it's like... 96% positive (ditto the re-tweets). Or at least it was when I looked.

I presume they are mostly Millennials who grew up RTD's Who, so have it in the 'fond childhood memories' box, and did not know anything about all the fandom kerfuffles. :)

Tumblr is reading Dracula?!?! Geez, step away from the internet for a few years and all the good stuff happens.

They've only just started! All the posts are about Jonathan being oblivious to all of the red flags, hilarity at Dracula running around doing all the house work, and everyone loves Mina. They also ship her with Lucy AND Jonathan and envisage a happy poly future. (Presuming nothing bad happens... *g*)
It's HUGELY entertaining.
It's funny, cause I mentioned it to the Cherub in passing, and she rolled her eyes as hard as only a 16 year old can, because it's ALL OVER TUMBLR, and apparently Miss M has signed up to have the installments sent... I am very amused.
Currently having slightly more time but still not enough
(Anonymous) 2022-05-10 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)My one reservation about RTD coming back, is that well, this time we’ll probably have no Moffat afterwards to come do a soft reboot and save us. So if he breaks down Doctor again, if he makes him too miserable, we're doomed! Or at least the narrative is. What shall we do!
Re: Currently having slightly more time but still not enough
He's in Sex Education where he is absolutely delightful. I can definitely believe that he blew them all away in his audition. But yeah, young and mostly unknown. :)

LOL! My counter point is that RTD2 will undoubtedly be very different from back then. There is a theory (and I've been meaning to write something about it too), that he has for the past... 20 odd years been trying to deal with the AIDS pandemic through his work. (His Doctor was a lone figure, everyone else had died, and the only other survivor had gone crazy. If you know what to look for, it's pretty obvious.) However, what with It's A Sin, it seems he might finally have exorcised the demons from back then, so what comes next should be hugely interesting.

(Anonymous) 2022-05-10 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)I don't know, he's a nihilist drama queen, he can be self-indulgent, he does enjoy beating the audience with a stick, and I think he's got some weird, dumb views; but gosh darn it, his heart is in the right place, there will be meta, and he can write, so.
I mean, hopefully he *will* be different. Also, okay, other writers apart from Moffat can save us afterwards if he can't resist his old style, lol.
Re: Currently having slightly more time but still not enough
Oh I am SURE of it. But different stuff. I have no idea how it will manifest.

*laughs* I want to frame this description.

You never know, we might be a FEMALE show runner... :O

S2 is... also clever, but more everything. I can't describe it without giving out spoilers.

I read it before Moffat's Dracula aired, to know the material, and it's rather dry (not sure that's the right word? Religious?) in places. I am curious at how Tumblr will cope with later developments.
Dracula has a serious claim to be the first Modern Horror Novel and there's a reason it's never gone out of print.
Oh yes. It's easy to see why it became popular.
Although I do get kind of tired with everyone mocking Jonathan but that's just Tumblr.
Eh, soon all their hearts will be broken, so...

It takes a while to get going, sure. But once it does, whooo!

Not Well.

To be fair, the old man at the very beginning, in Whitby, complaining* about the tourists, is possibly my favourite. Nothing has changed!
Not Well.
Well there seems to be plenty of Knowledgeable People around, being Sensible, so let's hope they manage to calm people down.

And all the Dracula reading is hilarious. Especially all the "Being a young solicitor" takes

I think the second one is better, which seems impossible. And yet, here we are.

IKR? I am just so entertained. :D

Ahhh, the asses coming crawling out to spoil everyone's fun. *Sigh* Typical.

Then there are also those who (hilariously) say that RTD will stop all this 'woke' nonsense. I hope they've already learned better. >:)
