HOW HAVE I NOT HEARD ABOUT THIS BEFORE??

So, all European (EU) friends:

(If you’re European, in a couple of weeks you will be denied any and all access to fandom contents on Tumblr and everywhere else on the internet. Here’s why.
From this Tumblr post <- obviously the internet won't DISAPPEAR. However, it could be the very slow start...)

More info:

Why You Need to act NOW! To save the internet.

I hate 2018. There's never a 'Surely it's not that bad' option. :( I mean, maybe everything will be fine, but WHAT IF?

(As an EU citizen living in the UK, my rights are already questionable.)

ETA: Bless the OTW (with thanks to my flist): EU Copyright Developments and Fans

And they say basically the same as the links above: Contact your MEP! Make your voice heard!

Because from what I can gather, this seems to in fact be scaremongering. The measure is real, but it's up to individual countries to administer and shouldn't make much difference. (If you follow that tumblr post long enough, if it's the same one, you'll see the input from a few legal people who seem to be making sense. Thankfully!!)

I know!

Best to double check for yourself, but certainly when I've followed links and tumblr posts about it, the people with legal expertise who aren't worried sound sensible to me. (Certainly, even if it went through, it would take a long time to have an effect, would chiefly affect big companies like Google - who may in part be behind the 'scaremongering' and would be patchy by country, like YouTube blocking is currently, and that it may actually be a good thing in many ways.)

But obviously I'm just going by who seemed the most informed online, and it's not always easy to tell who's right!

It is scaremongering. And the scaremongering campaign is being pushed by American libertarians because blah blah Big Government Bad and what have you.

That was what I had heard, but obviously it's not easy to be 100% sure of which side is right!

I mean. It's not really a GOOD thing. But what it basically amounts to is more red tape headaches and possibly more operating expense for websites like Ao3, which is why they are right to oppose it. It's not censorship in any respect though and it's not The Death of Fandom.

I'd be more cautious about people claiming it's somehow possible and likely that a directive [it's not even a law...] can block access to any and all fandom content across the entire European Union in a matter of days. It's an absurd thing to claim.

The Organization for Transformative Works has presented to the European Commission on this topic: http://www.transformativeworks.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/EvalModFrameworkEnfIPR_INTERMEDIARIES_b52beec9-c8c0-4236-a483-ec56b477e161.pdf

You could always email them to ask for an update. They might be able to provide a more reasoned perspective on where things currently stand. http://www.transformativeworks.org/contact_us/

The OTW just posted about this with some information about what fans in the EU can do (short version: contact your MEP): http://www.transformativeworks.org/eu-copyright-developments-and-fans/

Because it was done all hush-hush, I think. I also discovered it last week, very recently considering the issue. Already signed the petition and I'm sharing the article everywhere (Although not here! I forgot!) I hope that fuckery will not stand.

Gondor calls for aid! And the lurkers will answer!

(endless internal screaming)

I haven't got time for this Mickey Mouse bullshit.

Fuck this. Fuck my life. Fuck everything.

I don't even know if this will affect Deviantart, but I'm sharing it there too. I've got one hundred watchers, goddammit. Do we know if it will? Livejournal? (Yes, I'm a worst case scenario kind of person).

On a happier note, I've sent you the thing, I hope it was the right email.

(is even more anxious than usual, which is saying something)

Well, I'm still gonnna copy-paste and download all the things, or at least try to, just in case. Those I don't already have, that is. Fortune favours the prepared.

Yep, that's the one. I've probably gotten the spam treatment again. It's "Êl síla erin lû e-govaned vîn!", a Sindarin greeting. Because when you're as pretentious as I am, you either go big, or you go home.

Well, damn.

It says you didn't get it, because your email system/service/whatever does not accept connections with mine...? I use Outlook (hotmail). And that your administrator may be able to correct this.

But the fault is most probably at my end. There *is* something wrong, but it just looks like a bunch of complicated crap, I understand nothing. So I'm just going to ignore it for noe.

Fortunately, I have another email. I'll try that one.

It's not QUITE that bad

This is a directive, meaning (unlike the GDPR) that it leaves the goals of the directive open to somewhat free implementation by member states, as long as the basic goals of the directive are met on time. As such, it will be years before we actually see any binding legislation as a result of this directive, and how member states choose to implement it will vary on the state in question.

Oh yes, I agree that we need to be vigilant (constant vigilance!) but it's not the same as Congress trying to end Net Neutrality.

Yes, the weather is beautiful, I just wish people would stop wasting water. :/

Agreed on the hose pipe ban. Sometimes the only way to stop people abusing their privilege is to take it away. *sigh* I have switched my shower to its Eco setting and am trying cut down on washing up and laundry but I live by myself so I don't use all that much any way.
