I have *no* idea! It's all [livejournal.com profile] scarlettgirl's fault!

fandom_wank is Teh Crack. [livejournal.com profile] jennyo was talking about how all most TV shows are racist (not enough black people!!!), including Torchwood... which is of course set in *Wales*, not downtown NY. And the Welsh are probably grateful that there's someone beside Daffyd representing them on TV. Except Jenny doesn't care about people who've been oppressed if they're white: "I must honestly admit I don't give a shit about Welsh people, and that I will probably from now on hope that the Welsh are, in fact, further oppressed." Dude, you couldn't make it up! Aaaaanyway, read all about it here. *happy sigh* That's some quality wank! If nothing else it proves that the Torchwood fandom is completely bonkers and absolutely marvellous! To quote one of the comments, which might be my favourite ever:

"It involves alien-hunting and a cyborg fighting a pterodactyl, and I am quite, quite certain that every single pairing is canon. Just watch an episode, pick any two of the main characters, and I can pretty much assure you that it's either canon or will be canon in the near future. It's just a fanfic-writer's dream."

And also this, which also mentions the drawbacks:

"I think it has everything it needs to be able to make a really good show, once it finds its groove and figures out its characters and the writers get over their "OMG SEX! Tee-hee!" phase, but I really don't think that's going to happen in the first season. So far, the quality oscillates even more than New Who does, which is really kinda not good. Like, at all.

But in the meantime we have canon mpreg and hands in jars and pterodactyls getting punched in the face, not to mention the RAMPANT HO-YAY OMG YES, so hopefully that will keep us going until the quality evens out a bit. Well, that and the fanfic. XD"

This is a show to watch for the fandom! :)

That was truly tasty wank. I think every new fandom needs a dose of jennyo to get it jump started.

My friend [livejournal.com profile] lim summed it up neatly - Basically, JennyNo said that Torchwood was racist for not accurately portraying the ethnic diversity of South California.

I thought you might appreciate that!

Ha, ha, bigotry is all right if she does it?

I always think of people's attitudes as a big circle. At one point are those who have empathy for others and directly opposite are the fanatics, whose only distinguishing characteristics are what they are fanatically about. Like Wm. Gibson says, "Indeed, I believe that the spectrum forms a full circle, with right and left merging, as they meet at their respective extremes, into luminous batshit evil."

Bwahaha... but I doubt that [livejournal.com profile] jennyo has encountered Daffyd, which is rather a shame really. Now I have to decide whether to break my self-imposed rule of [livejournal.com profile] jennyo avoidance, or go and have a good giggle. Decisions, decisions...

Umm...thanks for introducing me to that slice of fandom. I think. :)

Though to be fair, in its original context that line about not giving a shit about Welsh people was clearly supposed to be ironic, replying to someone else's sarcastic comment...

Unlike usenet, where (as far as I can tell) people will argue over *one* detail ad nauseam, the fandom arguments around here tend to be wider, and revolve around bigger issues.

It could be that the format of Usenet, with automatic interspersed posting, makes that kind of nitpicking easier... or just that the sort of people who would still be reading Usenet newsgroups about a TV show that finished four years ago have a tendency towards obsessive behaviour anyway. :) Maybe it's even a gender-bias thing?

Oh, and just to settle a sort-of argument re. the cuteness of babies (I presume you saw it?) here's a link to some photos that should hopefully prove that my baby *is* as cute as Connor (I think cuter of course, but I'm after an impartial opinion here! *g*).

She seemed cute. Was she cute? I mean, I'm not a great judge, but I think she seemed cute...

And I've just seen that argument... sometimes posting on atbvs feels like throwing raw meat to a pack of wolves; especially since I was making what I thought was an interesting observation, and at least one person took it as a personal criticism...

I mean, you almost have to hand it to jennyo. She just keeps dragging along that same old mantra and tossing it on new fandoms as they come along. I think she'll always find that inner source of kerfuffle well into old age.

P.S. HI! I know i haven't commented in forever and gah, i think i missed your bday too. I've so much been updating and running and being all insular. Hope you've been doing well and I hope you had a great birthday *squishes you*

JennyO can be very amusing if watched from a safe distance. I am amazed that anyone engages with her seriously, but perhaps they don't? Maybe it's all a lot of stick poking by a bunch of people who want to see what utter nonsense they can get her to spout?

True - but like you said, agreeing with her is impossible.
