Watched episode 2 tonight, and Darcy (who was given this LJ moniker partly because of how critical he is) admitted to rather liking it - except for the theme music.

I, on the other hand, heard the first notes [back when watching ep 1] and thought to myself 'Oh, I must find that! It's gorgeous!'

So for those of you who feel like I do - here it is:

I particularly enjoyed how they demonstrate Victoria's youth and inexperience... while also showing that the men who continually try to use it against her are awful old men. XD

The complicated relationship between Victoria and her mother is one of my favourite parts (and of course, based in real life). Given how complex and full of resentment it was, it seems inevitable that Victoria's relationships with her own children would be troubled.

Oh, is Martin Phipps doing the music? (I have Victoria on my DVR but I haven't watched it yet) That's great - he did the amazing score for North & South, which is probably still my favourite TV soundtrack for anything. The whole thing is perfect, but I've seen hell (and it's snow white) is gorgeous.

I am often fairly oblivious (well, consciously - very much not subconsciously) to soundtracks, but his N&S work was just so good, I took note. He also wrote some lovely music for the BBC 90's Lorna Doone (it was the best thing about that), and no doubt more stuff than I've been aware of! I was looking forward to watching Victoria anyway, but now have an extra bounce in me with the knowledge of a Martin Phipps score ahead of me as a bonus.

(As a side note, although I am a nuisance about reccing things, if you haven't seen the BBC's 2004 North & South, I think you might like it very much.)

I know that feeling - it takes something extra to make me take notice, but some composers (like Murray Gold) get hold of me and it's always rewarding.

Aha, no, this is an entirely different story - a BBC classic adaptation of the Elizabeth Gaskell novel - and N&S refers to the eternal UK north-south divide. It's very about 19th C social justice and has a whole bunch of interesting relationships, as well as an excellent central romance (with Richard Armitage as Mr Thornton, so there's nice things on the shallow side too), so I could see it being your kind of thing. Unlike most of my faves, it should be easily available by all the usual methods!

ETA: Whoops posted too soon. I've been trying to find a trailer and I can't find a really good one, but this one isn't bad.

Same for me! We actually got to see that on Eastern German TV even. I basically only started to watch because I knew Patrick Swayze from "Dirty Dancing". I loved it.

The first time it aired, I was alone at home and was able to watch it. At the time, of course I did not have my own TV so had to watch what my parents watched. My mother does not like such series. I actually went to the neighbours to watch with them LOL

I also have watched it several times again, whenever it was in TV again later. It somehow always draws you in, even if you just want to get a small glimpse.

See, I have no recollection of much of it, except I remember watching it with my best friend... As you say, it was the Patrick Swayze factor. :)
