IDK, I share absolutely 0 experience with this person or her way of coping. I would say that the generalization of why she and her closed and similar set of friends are drinking to why women in general drink is a gross overgeneralization. YMMV, which is the point. I've worked in tech for over 10 years now and haven't found the need to drink a bottle of wine each night to keep my sanity.
(ETA: and MMMV if the Big G decides not to extend an offer at the end of this week...) PS: spammer above! eek!
Yeah, I sympathize, but I can't really empathize. I only work on the fringes of tech, but I've got a reasonably high-stress job. I've never been a drinker, and I've always found slaughtering pixelated RPG monsters far more effective at stress management.
I've always found slaughtering pixelated RPG monsters far more effective at stress management. This is clearly the answer. Now how do we get that across to the wider female community... Or at least the part that drinks too much? /rhetorical question

I certainly know at least one female co-worker who probably does feel as above, as well. I just have had a string of good luck I suppose. My prior workplace was not especially female-friendly but I don't feel like it ever got in the way of my career.
I can relate to SO many of those stories - especially the mansplaining panel. I don't drink to cope; I take anti-depressants, sign petitions and give money to women's rights groups. I still get angry - occasionally furious - but at least I feel like I'm doing some good.
Some of my friends who drink are so brainwashed by the patriarchy that they don't even realize there's a problem.
I can relate to SO many of those stories - especially the mansplaining panel. Don't know if you saw it, but I posted a link the other day to a survey that shows that 56% of men think that equality has been achieved...

I'm not a drinker myself, but a lot of drinkers I have known feels it 'mutes' their inner WTF buttons. I am not fond of alcohol (and the way it messes me up), so I cannot personally attest to this. But I do think drinking has become a universal response to our world in general.
Or maybe I just notice it way too much and drinking norms across the world haven't changed much over time.
