Progressive
Let’s start, this time, with a story. This is about Hillary Clinton – everything I write seems to be about her these days – but it’s about me, too. It’s about what it means, to be a feminist, or a woman on the left, and whether it matters. So before I get to her, let’s give you a good look at me.
No matter how much of a Bernie Sanders supporter you may be (or a Republican, even), or how much you may dislike Hillary Clinton - please read it.
And you'll see why these things were what sprang to mind:
'It was usually an effective tactic, another one of those tricks I had learned: People were satisfied so long as you were courteous and smiled and made no sudden moves. They were more than satisfied; they were relieved - such a pleasant surprise to find a well-mannered young black man who didn't seem angry all the time.'
Barack Obama, Dreams From My Father

Also important in this context: Beyonce's Super Bowl performance. Although she is black AND a woman and she dares to be angry. Good on her.

Beyoncé was amazing (and the conservative media in the US is foaming at the mouth over her).

I saw a part of it, couldn't find the rest, but then
I hadn't seen that excerpt from Obama before... it really hits hard.
I love his book, and that excerpt especially is important. But it sits within a whole narrative about trying to come to terms with and understand race (especially as someone mixed race) and honestly I can't recommend it enough.
And - as is obvious - I think this is where Obama & Clinton overlap, they both know what it's like to have to toe that line, to have to keep smiling. (Trump in comparison is an overgrown toddler who gives in to every tantrum. He'd not last a day as a minority.)

I've not seen the show, but I've seen the coverage over here... So I can imagine what it's like over there. I am so happy she's using her powers.

Trump needs a smack.

Another excellent article from the same writer here: Saying nice things about Hillary Clinton has become a subversive act.
Trump needs a smack.
He'd just whine and say how UNFAIR everyone is.
Here's Bruno Mars and Beyoncé's performance
Oooh, thank you! :D

Amen. It's awful watching the events unfold & not be able to do anything, just having to trust the great American populace not to doom the world...

It does a good job of showing how Hillary is the best candidate, without discussing gender or making it about gender.

This. I think she'd make a fine president, and dammit, it'd be amazing to have the first female president after the first black one. :)

Shiny!

Nice. I like it.

But! Angry black people are BAD! They don't stop to think WHY they are angry...

I know the main target audience is young girls but I watch it because I needed to balance out the angst I see from other shows about superheroes.
Anyway. People will be judged by a sterotype if they come from a certain cultural background or social status. In some cases it's a double standard issue between men and women.
I wish I could put it to those who have a problem with people who are different to them!.
What is the reasoning behind all of it?.

All I know if gifs on Tumblr. But it looks fun & shiny. :)

Yup. Race, gender, orientation, class, etc... So many biases. I wish people were better at understanding their own bias, it'd make the world better.
What is the reasoning behind all of it?
Us vs. them. Attack on privilege.

I've experience my fair share of racism whist growing up. I was born in Australia, with an Indonesian background. What annoyed me however was that they never got my nationality right. I didn't know whether to be insulted or to correct them. Their arrogance is what made them think they had more right to be in Australia than me.

Clark communicates with Kara via text whenever she needs moral support, if she's not already getting it from her older foster sister.
Sisters ftw!

:( People presume far too much, just based on looks. And people who think they have a 'right' based on their looks is horrible. (Although I suppose if you wanted to be nasty you could console yourself that you weren't descended from convicts.)

When Martha Jones had to deal with racism, it took me back my own experiences.
My mum was at the shops, in the check out line once and some kids were making racist comments towards her. She responded by saying:
"I arrived in this country legally by plane. It was a Qantas. Your anchestors were probably forced to come here by boat!".
I should of just waved my Australian Passport everytime I had to deal with racist people.
They didn't know how to respond to that.

I can imagine. And I'm glad it was handled OK?

Ha! Very good. Here's to hoping people will get a grip.

I have a lot of cousins. A few I'm close to but there overseas so I don't see them often. I keep in touch by phone or text.
Whoever said words can never hurt you must of had a coping mechanism. I didn't. It's not until I look back on it as an adult that I realized those people who bullied me were pathetic. I wish I had known how to make some witty come back lines at the time. I don't know how I'd react if I ever saw those people again.
It was more political incorrect slurs. I was never tease for the color of my skin. My brother handled it better than me. The bullying stopped when we both grew up in our teen years. Bullies aren't so tough when you become bigger than them.
Thanks for your concern.:)

They were someone who'd never been verbally bullied. Glad you are doing better now, and I hope you never see them again. Mind you, they might not be doing all that well now...
Thanks for your concern.:)
I am good at worrying - and I want to make sure people are OK. ((hugs))

That's what happens when I try to use the internet on my mobile instead of a laptop.
Putting that aside, I understand that bullying seems to be getting worser because of social media. I'm lucky that I grew up in an era before that at least. I'm been through depression but I was able to overcome that.
I didn't think I'd be sharing this much personal information about myself when I decided to get an LJ account but for some reason it feels like a natural progression for me. But I also don't want to make people feel uncomfortable about my issues.

No it's fine! And I know what it's like to type on tiny devices...

New technology means people find new ways of being nasty. But also - re. your last paragraph - it helps them reach out in new ways. I'm not sure where I'd be without LJ, and I know several people that I've met here that I couldn't imagine my life without. It seems to foster community, unlike say Tumblr or facebook.

Its not fair that no matter what, people are going to choose to be bad despite what environment they are in or what resources they have access to.
I guess those who do the right thing are a way of counterbalancing the situation.
I still think bad people are just getting more cowardly and devious because they can hide behind a computer screen.
Those who get harassed by sms at least have evidence.
Businesses have to keep upgrading their security because people will always try and steal from them.
Anyway. It is nice to be reminded that their are still decent people in the world. Just having someone to talk to means a lot to me.

I can imagine. :(
But I'm strongly in the Hillary camp.
I am getting there. I like Sanders, but... It'd be yet another white, male cis dude. And Hillary is most definitely more qualified.

Beyonce. Telling it like it is. Hells yes!!
I am not happy about the brouhaha over Hillary and her being a woman and the 'male-oriented' press' reaction to her campaign. That being said, I would love to have a woman as president. Just...not Hillary. Not fond of her centrist policies and some of the more dangerous ones she has implemented in the past and promises to make a reality in the future. She is a strong woman. One of conviction and one who truly believes in what she does. I just think she is too far removed from the reality we all live.
*HUGS*

Not sure exactly what you mean, but that quote very much illustrates how he's run his presidency. No overt anger, no sudden moves. (Don't scare the white folks.)
Beyonce. Telling it like it is. Hells yes!!
It's so very great when famous people do something important.

Well, there are no others. And she is most definitely the most qualified candidate running.
I just think she is too far removed from the reality we all live.
I wouldn't be so sure. The more I read, the more I find out that she's done good stuff. (Everyone knows about the bad stuff.)

True. But also great when they do it with style and grace.
Here I will agree to disagree. The Clintons (Hillary included) have done some very marvelous things. She is an excellent Senator. But I feel she would not make a good president. Personal opinion, though. I have reasons for it, but it takes too long to explain and I don't really want to start a hooraw in your ElJay.

Oh I see! Sorry, long day. And very much yes. But, it's fascinating reading his book, because you see how much he's thought about all the issues, from a young age.
He has been an excellent president, a great leader and an inspiration.
Hear, hear!
But I feel she would not make a good president. Personal opinion, though. I have reasons for it, but it takes too long to explain and I don't really want to start a hooraw in your ElJay.
No worries, it's not even my country.

Aww, but your have every right to an opinion, your country or no. And we do need more diverse leaders, I heartily agree. I can only hope President Obama is the first in a long line...

We have Corbyn as the leader of the opposition, who's quite Bernie-like, I suppose, but although he's loved at grassroots level, the media, the government & his own party are constantly trying to drag him down. :(
no subject
Likely because he spooks those in power. Hillary and Bernie do so here. Bernie is considered to not have a plan, but the media hardly bothers to find out what plans he does have, so no surprise there. No one knew who the man was ten months ago (except us grass rooters), so the brouhaha over him is gratifying and mystifying all at once. Hillary has solid plans, but some of them (even if implemented) will do little to change most of the status quo - though getting either candidates plans passed in the current congress is pretty much a fairy-dream. UGH.
Though with the passing of Anton Scalia (which...sounds ominous and rather terrible from what I've read of it - whether I like the man, or his policies, or not - I did not wish him illw ill), things are bound to get weird in the Senate. Exciting. But not in a good way, methinks!
