Because Madonna.
From The Guardian:
Madonna is superhuman. She has to be to survive the ugly abuse
This led me to:
Madonna acts just like a serious male artist would – and people hate her for it.
And a bonus link, from The Toast:
The Ideal Woman.

The one good thing about Madonna is that my parents felt the same way, and we both got walkmen-- with headphones!-- for christmas that year!

And yeah, me too. Brain not functioning re, meta. (Brain functioning re. writing original stuff, but that's different.) Had the incredibly obvious insight (thanks to Tumblr) that both River & the Doctor have used up all their regenerations. Which might lend a slightly different context to Eleven's decision to quit after all his Ponds die? He's old and tired and his family/those he loves are gone. What does he have to live for? And then Clara comes along and shows him that he doesn't have to just sit around waiting to die of old age. And I think that in that case it's important that she's a mystery - she something intriguing enough for him to get up & investigate.
(Must go, but am now pondering the shift from Eleven to Twelve and Clara's role... Will be back.)
ETA: Trenzalore is sort of like retirement? Yes he still fights, but he's in one place and is not running around.
