More re-watch...

Hello! I'm still here, just in lurker mode. Hopefully I'll get round to a 'proper' update at some point!

Our S1 re-watch is continuing - don't have much to say about 'The Pack' except NB is very good and the big difference between Hyena!Xander and ordinary being-a-jackass-Xander lies in the fact that Xander can do/say awful things, but they're usually in reaction to something else or he's lashing out because he's hurting. Xander doesn't do caluculated cruelty.

Watched 'Angel' last night and DB must have been getting some acting lessons, because he's very watchable. And of course Darla finally gets interesting before they kill her off... (how I love this 'verse where characters never stay dead!). Not many thoughts, but what there were decided to turn into a little 250 word drabble set near the end (sort of a FitB I suppose, not that anything happens):

Dust

He killed her.

His goddess; his mentor; his perfect mistress for 150 years... she exploded into dust and scattered over the dance floor of a small-town club and his demon howled.

Silently he walked out of The Bronze, with only the briefest of glances over his shoulder. His mind was too crowded with memories for him to speak with anyone living.

Many, many years ago Angel killed his mother, delighting in the look of pure terror before he tore out her throat. His mother had given him life, a life he had squandered, never understanding what a fool he was. When his soul had been returned, her face was the first he remembered and he’d felt sick at what he had done; guilt choking him for a century.

And now... now he had killed his Sire - the woman who had given him unlife. His Darla who had taught him everything - who had been his everything from the beginning. And now she was dust. Because of a young girl with fearlessness in her eyes.

The Slayer inspired feelings in him that he had never known before - he thought it might be love. He didn’t understand it, but knew that it was dangerous, because death followed him.

Angel had finally made his choice - going against his nature, his family, his fears - and he no longer had blood on his hands; only dust. And after everything, he discovered that Darla had one last lesson to impart, as surprising as it was acute.

Grief.

Very nice. I've always liked to believe that the reason why Angel disappeared for several episodes after he killed Darla was because he was grieving.

Yes. I wonder if it was at that point Joss realised that Angel would have to come back, due to fan clamour or not. He's always said that S1 was planned from beginning to end.

Very nice! I've always loved Angel and Darla together-- she's really the one character he has any chemistry with IMO. Granted I'm looking back at season 1 having watched her entire arch on ATS, but I don't for a minute believe that Angel didn't love her.

And DB is so very, very pretty in season one...

and he no longer had blood on his hands; only dust.

I love that. I always find Angel and Darla so much more interesting than Angel and Buffy and I'm sure he would have grieved for her. Very nice.

Excellent. Really subtle and convincing POV.

Heee! Icon love :)
That was lovely, so subtle and yet it breaks your heart. I like how you paralleled the death of his mother with the death of Darla - and both at his own hands. It's an interesting distinction - as if the soul doesn't change who he intrinsically is. Er, rather than a mother killer, someone able to make the ultimate sacrifice for the person he loves. Ooooooh brain wave - Connor!
And after everything, he discovered that Darla had one last lesson to impart, as surprising as it was acute.

Grief.

::wibble wibble wibble:: Lovely writing.
Pssst! His mind was too crowed crowed or crowded?

Too tired to be coherent, but that was quite lovely.

Oh E, that was just heart breaking. Very nicely done! I love the comparisons you draw between Darla and his mother, and the awareness Angel has at his sire's final lesson. Loved it!

But then we'd have missed The Prom. I love that episode. To me, that's the definitive end of B/A and it should have stayed that way.

Heh! We'd also have missed the hiliarious send-up of the whole teenage OTT-ness of it in The Zeppo.

Very nice. A very believable take on what Angel might have been thinking.

oh, woobie! *hugs him*

i've always thought this moment ranks up there with the Most Painful Moments of Angel's Life. of course, angel/darla's my otp, so it ranks with the Most Painful Moments of Girlpire's [TV] Life as well.

*sniffle*

[identity profile] girlpire.livejournal.com 2007-12-16 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
(And it's clear that Buffy just doesn't get how painful it is for Angel at all. Poor Angel.)

i know! that just makes it worse - he's made this gigantic sacrifice to protect her and she doesn't even get it. and that's always happening to angel. like in IWRY when he's the only one who remembers, and the whole thing with connor and W&H. it's no wonder the man was disappointed when he wasn't mentioned in the newspaper article about saving the actress' life or when wesley got all the attention in "guise will be guise." it's because angel never gets credit for anything! like when he saves the day in "couplet" and tries to give groo the credit and then groo credits him right back but all cordelia can focus on is groo!

i'm getting all worked up, and i shouldn't. i like that angel never gets credit. it makes him more of a hero to me, that he does these things at often significant cost to himself and very little compensation. just because it's right. he wouldn't be angel if he tried to explain to buffy just how big a deal staking his sire was.

he'd be spike. heh.

[identity profile] girlpire.livejournal.com 2007-12-18 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
he has a tendency to make big, life-altering decision for others, without their consent

would you call it a tendency, really? i only specifically remember this happening once. but then i may be repressing. :)

This drabble is pure love.

I'm very interested in the dynamic between Darla and Angel: is very complex, but not in a romantic way.
It's important this moment: he kills his "mother" to protect his first love. :3
