Fic: When Amy Met the Master.
First one! For ages I wondered if I could somehow tie this vignette into my River-meets-the-Master story, but it shall have to just stand alone.
Summary: The Doctor drops the Master off at the Ponds' for five minutes. Things do not progress as planned.
Setting: Between 'The Widow etc' and 'The Dalek Asylum'
Characters: Amy, Rory, the Doctor, the Master.
Rating: PG
Wordcount: 1000 approx

When Amy Met the Master
"Five minutes, Amy, that's all. Just keep an eye on him for five minutes."
She shot the handcuffed stranger a dubious look.
"You say he's a Time Lord? But he was the Prime Minister and he died..."
"And then he came back and then he ended up inside the Time War and he shouldn't be possible. I need to-" The Doctor waved his hands around, indicating all the million-and-one things he would need to do, probably to do with making sure that the whole Time War wouldn't fall down into their laps also. Eventually he held his palms together, pleading.
"Amy. Just five minutes. I promise I'll be back. But I can't take him with me where I'm going."
"Fine. But if he breaks anything, you're paying for it. And if you're late, he's sleeping in the shed."
~
'The Master' glared after the Doctor as he left (the Doctor's admonitions still ringing in their ears), then - after letting his eyes take in the furniture of the lounge with ill-concealed disdain - sat down on the sofa.
Amy eyed him warily. The Doctor hadn't said much except 'dangerous Time Lord', and as for the Prime Minister stuff then she hadn't voted for him. And hadn't he killed the cabinet? She really should have asked for more information, although the Doctor would probably just have lied...
“Well, I guess it could be worse," he sniffed, looking at her like she was a particularly stupid three year old. "At least I don’t have Martha Jones’ family to gloat over me-”
He stopped himself.
“You don’t happen to be best pals, do you?”
“The Doctor's mentioned her,” Amy said, frowning, “but we’ve never met.”
The name rang a familiar bell though... Martha Jones. Martha Jones. Why did that name suddenly feel like one she ought to know? Martha Jones...
The Master smiled scornfully.
“Martha Jones, ‘the Legend’. Some legend what with everyone forgetting - not even the Doctor drops by apparently...”
“Martha Jones the Legend,” Amy said faintly, reaching out to grasp hold of the shelves next to her. “The woman who walked the Earth...”
“That’s the one!” the Master replied, but she barely heard him over the sickening rush of memories filling her mind.
Toclafane. Shipyards. A whole world enslaved. An unknown menace with the face of a man living in the clouds above. And so much killing...
Shaking she brought a hand up to her mouth.
Rory. Dead on the first day. Mels dragging her to safety, as Amy fought her, screaming. A whole year, with nothing but pain, Mels - initially so strong - falling to pieces, saying how time was wrong, and how she shouldn’t even be there, and cursing the Doctor with every other breath... the rest were reserved for the Master.
“Amy?” she heard a voice say, and she looked up to see him. On her sofa. She stumbled backwards, blindly reaching into the top drawer behind her and pulling out the gun she kept there (isomorphic controls, set to Pond), pointing it straight at his head.
“Amy?” he repeated, with genuine surprise and a fair bit of alarm, and she brought up her other hand to steady the gun. Her heart was beating too loud and she felt like throwing up.
“I. Remember. You,” she said slowly. “I remember what you did. A whole year you ruled this planet, Master!”
He tried a placating smile.
“OK, I know what the Doctor must have told you, no need to go all emotional...”
Her finger tightened on the trigger.
“The Doctor told me squat. I remember!”
His eyes narrowed, and he shook his head.
“That’s impossible.”
Her trembling nearly under control, she smiled a stiff smile.
“That’s me. Mad, impossible Amy Pond. I grew up with a crack in my wall, and I can remember things that never happened. I remember your flying metal spheres killing people. I remember the rockets. I remember your statues and your speeches and the way everyone worshipped you. I remember being hungry and cold and desperate and always, always scared, and I remember hating you with every fibre of my being.”
The Master opened his mouth, but at that moment the door opened and Rory stepped in, looking from one to the other, taking the situation on board.
“Amy...”
Without taking her eyes off the Master she answered.
“He killed you. Or rather, his Toclafane did. Took out ten percent of the population on the first day he was in power. One of them was you.”
“I... don’t know what you’re talking about. Or why he's even here.”
”It’s OK, you can’t remember it. But I can. By the way-” her eyes narrowed, and she focussed on the Master again, “-that whole thing about the gun in four parts? Was that true?”
“No,” he replied.
“Nevermind. This one will do quite nicely. And before you start going on about how immortal you are, I know that if you’re killed between regenerations you’ll be as dead as can be.”
There was genuine fear in his eyes now.
“You... you don’t want to kill me.”
“Give me one good reason.”
He held up his hands, as if about to launch into a winning argument.
“The Doctor wouldn’t want you to.”
Her smile deepened into a smirk.
“That hasn’t stopped me before.”
His fear had now mounted into panic, his eyes darting about the room, looking for an escape.
“Are you all insane? What the hell was the Doctor thinking when he chose you to travel with him?”
“Mostly-” the Doctor’s voice cut through, “-I was trying to make up for always being late. I’m glad to say that this time I arrived in time. Amy. Please don’t kill him.”
“Why not?”
She was still shaking with anger, but her voice was steady.
“Because I love him.”
The statement was perfectly neutral and quiet, said without any kind of emphasis, and Amy saw the Master slowly turn his head and look at the Doctor, swallowing against an emotion she couldn’t even begin to guess at.
“And... Because he was there, right from the beginning. Before everything else. Before the TARDIS, before the adventures, before running away from it all, we were boys together. Best friends, running through endless meadows of red grass under a burnt orange sky. And I destroyed that sky, I burned the grass, and I ripped our childhood and our home from the universe. The pain that you remember, is a pain we live with every day. A war that would not end, battles that couldn’t be won, family and friends torn from us every day. And he- They helped make him what he is him. They changed him, broke him, turned him into a weapon, then discarded him."
She understood what he was saying. But River hadn't slaughtered half the planet.
Lowering the gun she walked over to the Master, studied him carefully.
"I get it. But if you hurt anyone, especially my family, you'll be wishing you had never been born."
Looking up at her, she could see that the disdain had been replaced with confusion and tentative, if grudging, respect.
"Who are you?" he asked, and she smiled, leaning forward into his personal space.
"The scariest person you'll ever meet. I-" she paused for effect, "-am the Doctor's mother-in-law!"

*beams* Thank you so much! I hope that means the plot was unexpected, but the characters rang true. :)

And killer last line there! *g*

I can't even recall when I thought of it, but once I'd made the connection I couldn't not use it.
And oh, that line took forever to think of. I'm so glad I finally found it. :)

I loved every little touch; the Doctor promising to return, as always -he did, and right on time, which is always a delightful twist; the Master's attitude, arrogant, disdainful; the Martha Jones' allusion; Amy remembering Saxon and the year that never was -a story within a story, how thrilling, Amy is just like a box of letters, picking one and reading the timelines; Mels feeling how time was torn and Rory dying, again -I love how calm Rory was about that when he discovered; the question about the four-parts gun -and the Pond-isomorphic gun; the Master's genuine fear and confusion ; the Doctor's stopping Amy and telling her he loves the Master -how simple and true, of course he does; River and the Master paralleled; and Amy, oh dear, introducing herself as the Doctor's mother-in-law... Just wonderful. All the headcanons are accepted, all of them!
I just love your portrayal of Amy here; she is so fierce, definitely grown-up, in complete control, quick and sharp. I love a Doctor-light story and this one is just dandy. Such a daring combination. Because he is a Time Lord, he plays with time, and people, and Amy was played with, a little too much, when it comes to time. The twists and turns of Amy's reaction to the Master, especially the part about her remembering, were wonderful and took me by surprise. Splendid!
Favourite line: Fine. But if he breaks anything, you're paying for it. And if you're late, he's sleeping in the shed. Amy just put the Master in the Doctor's friend category here. This is a wonderful echo to the Doctor speech at the end. <3 Amy knew, right from the start.
Thank you for sharing!

As is your feedback! ♥ ♥ ♥
I loved every little touch; the Doctor promising to return, as always -he did, and right on time, which is always a delightful twist;
'A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.' ;)
the Master's attitude, arrogant, disdainful;
I love the Master, especially because he always thinks himself superior to everyone and everything.
the Martha Jones' allusion;
Martha Jones who laughed in his face... No, he does not like to remember her.
Amy remembering Saxon and the year that never was -a story within a story, how thrilling, Amy is just like a box of letters, picking one and reading the timelines
Ooooh, I love how you put that! ♥
Mels feeling how time was torn and Rory dying, again -I love how calm Rory was about that when he discovered
Of COURSE Rory died. It was just... a given. And I think Mels would have known. Probably not known what exactly was wrong, but she would know that things weren't happening like they should.
the question about the four-parts gun -and the Pond-isomorphic gun; the Master's genuine fear and confusion
There are a lot of different things tied up in these parts - Ten's general attitude to guns and how things have changed now; how I imagine River would make sure her parents had something with which to defend themselves; Amy ability to be genuinely scary and decisive if necessary (oh Kovarian) - all of which of course can just be summed up with she's a Pond, and how singular a thing that is. And how the Master really, really isn't prepared to deal with that.
the Doctor's stopping Amy and telling her he loves the Master -how simple and true, of course he does; River and the Master paralleled
I love having Eleven in a good place, where he can be honest and straightforward. And the River/Master parallels are off the scale - if only the Doctor had managed to reach out to the Master in time, he might not have gone wrong... (River's moral compass isn't exactly fabulous, but she can mirror the Doctor without being a complete opposite. The Master is, in many ways, quite one-note comparatively.) (Btw you've read the naming of things, right?)
and Amy, oh dear, introducing herself as the Doctor's mother-in-law... Just wonderful. All the headcanons are accepted, all of them!
*beams* That last line took me forever to work out (no really, this has been sat in a folder for maybe two years waiting for an ending) and then suddenly it was there. There's nothing better than taking an existing line and using it in a different context and giving it a different spin.
I just love your portrayal of Amy here; she is so fierce, definitely grown-up, in complete control, quick and sharp.
That's my Amy! :)
love a Doctor-light story and this one is just dandy. Such a daring combination.
I do love your way with words!
Because he is a Time Lord, he plays with time, and people, and Amy was played with, a little too much, when it comes to time. The twists and turns of Amy's reaction to the Master, especially the part about her remembering, were wonderful and took me by surprise. Splendid!
Thisssss. This exactly. And because she's been sucked in so deep, and has had her life altered so much, she has power within the narrative that others do not.
Amy just put the Master in the Doctor's friend category here. This is a wonderful echo to the Doctor speech at the end. <3 Amy knew, right from the start.
He's her raggedy man, she *understands* him! :)

And oh god- I feel bad for Amy because of course she'd be the one to remember 'The Year That Never Was'. And I can imagine the Master being scared shitless by her because I can just very easily picture her giving him the exact same, dangerous look she gave Madame Kovarian in the split second before she said, "River didn't get it all from you.. sweetie."
Aww- Eleven's quiet little response would be the thing to stop her because he always really is at his most serious when he goes quiet.

And oh god- I feel bad for Amy because of course she'd be the one to remember 'The Year That Never Was'.
Mad, Impossible Amy Pond. I think she could remember if she tried/had a reason...
And I can imagine the Master being scared shitless by her because I can just very easily picture her giving him the exact same, dangerous look she gave Madame Kovarian in the split second before she said, "River didn't get it all from you.. sweetie."
This, exactly. And he's used to Companions being, well, good. ('As if I would ask her to kill.') And Amy *is* good, yet that Pond-ness is dangerous if you cross them (using my 'Rory Williams is the new Chuck Norris' icon to illustrate the point. Love is a psychopath indeed.
Aww- Eleven's quiet little response would be the thing to stop her because he always really is at his most serious when he goes quiet.
Part of me really wishes we could have had the Master during Eleven's run, because Eleven would have flummoxed him, I think. Plus, he [the Master] would have underestimated him - which would have made for good TV. Ah well, never mind.

*chortles* Love you.
So yes. The idea for this fic is pretty fascinating, I really enjoyed what you did with that :D I loved the Doctor being all frenzied and dropping the Master at Amy's home while he went to investigate. Your description of the wild situation was pretty hilarious—and indeed, better not have the Time War dropping on their laps ;P The Doctor's pleading and Amy's comeback were great.
The Master's attitude was just delightful, haha—so haughty and "you human peasant"-ish. I loved his flippant mentioning of Martha—and then the way the evocation of her unlocked Amy's memory was just fascinating. The girl with a crack in her wall, remembering things others couldn't—linking the two situations was just brilliant! The way her memories all rushed back was so raw, both with the flood taking over her and the violence of it all, Rory's death, the running, the terror—the way you handled Mels in this situation was fascinating too.
I was of two minds at first about the gun—I think it was unsettling because of moments like Town Called Mercy, when she was actually the one to remind the Doctor about how he wasn't like that, pointing a gun for revenge. But on the other hand, it does make perfect sense—because of the implications, Amy being aware that her bond to the Doctor can endanger her family, and stopping at nothing to protect it. Because when the Doctor isn't there, Amy protects her own, just like against Madame Kovarian—you alluded to that actually :D And it was like a deliciously backward allusion to River, as in I wondered whether River influenced Amy or Amy had passed on her fierceness to River ("she doesn't get it all from you, sweetie"), or a mix of both because TIMEY-WIMEY. Brilliance, to sum it up.
Closing the digression. I loved how powerfully, physically impacted Amy was by the whole situation. The dialogue was very powerful—Amy fierce and desperate, full of rage for all of the terror and destruction that had all crashed back on her; the Master flippant at first, but puzzled by the apparent impossibility of her remembering. (Just another thing that threw me though, I don't know why—his calling her "Amy". I mean, I don't know what else he could have called her, but it sounded—familiar?) I also loved Rory walking in and the way Amy summed up the situation to him, lol. And the Master starting to be really, properly afraid was a great moment, especially with Amy's reaction to his argument about the Doctor. I loved how unsettled he was by how completely opposite his expectations she was behaving, and his frustration as he wondered what the Doctor had been thinking when he chose to travel with her.
I was also a bit unsettled by the way the Doctor simply stated "because I love him", but that might be just personal—I always do find it difficult to believe that the Doctor would state his love for someone so openly. But the situation called for it, his tone was very well depicted and the Master's reaction was utter perfection. Seriously, that following sentence =P And I just loved the Doctor's other lines, about Gallifrey—all the implications again, how he had had to destroy his own home and he couldn't destroy the Master, how the shared grief bound he and the Master together powerfully, how that destruction and pain were so similar to what Amy had felt, and finally, the River parallel. ♥♥♥ And Amy understanding, his message clearly getting through to her and her acceptance, but her still making it clear to the Master that she kept an eye on him, despite how unsettled and grudgingly respectful she felt. And the last line—kudos for a closure of epic hilarious to lighten up the mood ;)
Cheers for you! ^_^

I have no shame? (Also zomg this comment! I had forgotten how amazingly thorough you are! ♥)
So yes. The idea for this fic is pretty fascinating, I really enjoyed what you did with that :D
I sorta wish I could have done more, but it was not to be. So short and to the point is what you got!
Your description of the wild situation was pretty hilarious—and indeed, better not have the Time War dropping on their laps ;P The Doctor's pleading and Amy's comeback were great.
I really wanted to sneak in 'Why do you even have handcuffs' in there somewhere, but couldn't work it in organically... ;)
The Master's attitude was just delightful, haha—so haughty and "you human peasant"-ish.
I could write him forever - he (worryingly) seems to come very naturally.
The girl with a crack in her wall, remembering things others couldn't—linking the two situations was just brilliant! The way her memories all rushed back was so raw, both with the flood taking over her
'Flood' is a good description. And it occurred to me that Amy would be the only person in the world who'd be able to remember...
the way you handled Mels in this situation was fascinating too.
I've done something else with her in another fic, so it was interesting to do a different take.
I was of two minds at first about the gun
My thoughts were that it's from River - a last resort in case of extreme danger. And given Amy's state of mind, she'd be even more cut up than the Doctor in 'Mercy' - she's had the whole nightmare of TYTNW dumped into her head without warning, and there's no doubt about who the culprit is... (Which you go into further down, so I'm sort of repeating you.)
Because when the Doctor isn't there, Amy protects her own, just like against Madame Kovarian—you alluded to that actually :D
Mmmmm. Amy has that within her. (And Moffat, in the Confidential for TWoRS, talks about how it's probably the Doctor's influence on her life that's led her to become that...)
Just another thing that threw me though, I don't know why—his calling her "Amy".
Huh. That... never even struck me.
And the Master starting to be really, properly afraid was a great moment, especially with Amy's reaction to his argument about the Doctor. I loved how unsettled he was by how completely opposite his expectations she was behaving
He knows the kind of people the Doctor chooses for companions. Amy... doesn't fit. (Lalalalalala meta on how the show has changed.)
I was also a bit unsettled by the way the Doctor simply stated "because I love him", but that might be just personal—I always do find it difficult to believe that the Doctor would state his love for someone so openly.
Well... it's supposed to be shocking? I figure I can get away with it because the Doctor is a) in a good place and b) has managed to get the Master 'secure' which he didn't the previous times they met. And yes - it calls for it. He's trying to make up for the past...
And I just loved the Doctor's other lines, about Gallifrey
I think Amy is one of the only people he'd admit all this to. But then she's family...
and finally, the River parallel. ♥♥♥
Oh, I could never leave that out!
And Amy understanding, his message clearly getting through to her and her acceptance, but her still making it clear to the Master that she kept an eye on him
She's no fool!
And the last line—kudos for a closure of epic hilarious to lighten up the mood ;)
I just loved taking that line from the show and turning it, using it in a different way!
Thank you so much for all your thoughts, I feel all overwhelmed now. You do goooooood feedback!

I really wanted to sneak in 'Why do you even have handcuffs' in there somewhere, but couldn't work it in organically... ;)
*chortles* That would have been lovely.
I could write him forever - he (worryingly) seems to come very naturally.
Well, as long as he doesn't rub off on you ;)
And it occurred to me that Amy would be the only person in the world who'd be able to remember...
And it's just a striking notion.
I've done something else with her in another fic, so it was interesting to do a different take.
Mels is always great to explore ;)
My thoughts were that it's from River - a last resort in case of extreme danger.
Okay =)
And given Amy's state of mind, she'd be even more cut up than the Doctor in 'Mercy' - she's had the whole nightmare of TYTNW dumped into her head without warning, and there's no doubt about who the culprit is...
Makes sense!

Children of time…
his calling her "Amy".
Huh. That... never even struck me.
Idk why it did, my mind just stopped at that detail =P
He knows the kind of people the Doctor chooses for companions. Amy... doesn't fit. (Lalalalalala meta on how the show has changed.)
All the meta!
Well... it's supposed to be shocking?
And it is!
I figure I can get away with it because the Doctor is a) in a good place and b) has managed to get the Master 'secure' which he didn't the previous times they met. And yes - it calls for it. He's trying to make up for the past...

The weekend was very lovely indeed, but... intense. Ergo, tiredness.

There are NO words for how perfect this fiction is. Gods...
And Eleven is rather blunt, isn't he? The only person who could ever stay Amy's hand (if he is in the room to do so).
Ahhh, perfection!! And exactly what would happen!! Who else would he leave the Master with, but the Ponds? People he would be unable to intimidate/trick - and the most dangerous humans he has ever known. Just wonderful!!
This...needs more to it, methinks *nudges you*

It is one reason we love him so. And yes, he knows that when push comes to shove, honesty is the best way to go.

IKR? He knows they won't be overawed. And Rory is the Last Centurion, so he won't be worried about any fighting... It was too perfect an idea not to play with.
