My Mark Prediction.
OK, here's the thing: Mark likes complex, complicated, morally grey characters. He doesn't mind what they do, or how unlikeable they might be, as long as they make sense.
He flips out into ALL CAPSLOCKS when it comes to unexpected plot developments, but just look at his posts on Five by Five, Sanctuary and The Yoko Factor - careful and considered, and barely a capital letter in sight. No ranting against, say, Buffy (who's plenty unlikeable in Sanctuary), or Angel or Spike later on. He found TYF uncomfortable as hell, but admired how clever it was. (Also see his reviews of Torchwood: Children of Earth - thoughtful, appreciative, full of admiration.)
So here's my prediction: Fool For Love will happen, and a) He won't see it coming (because he's not very imaginative in that sense) and b) William the Bloody Awful Poet will hit him like a two ton truck and he'll never recover. Remember what we know: Mark was very badly bullied [for not being masculine enough/being gay], and I cannot imagine that he won't identify with Spike, esp considering Spike's continual outsider status. He already likes Spike for the snark etc, but knowing that a lot of it is a front, armour to protect himself/make him fit in, as well as the way he'll go on to, continually, lay his heart at Buffy's feet... ALL THE FEELS YOU GUYS! *g* ("You're beneath me" <- Mark is NOT prepared.)
How it'll play out over the long run I'm not sure, but I think he might just love S6.

(I still don't read this Mark-guy, but I've seen two or three reviews and I liked them)
I think that Spike's past would hit him. I'm very emotional when it comes to Spike's past as William, I loved him more when I knew that, basically, he was a lonely nerd. Well, if Mark was a bit of Spike, I think that he would sympathize.
(And now I can share my beautiful icon about beautiful William. Oh William, OH!)

I did know about all the plot developments in advance, but knowing what happens is different from actually watching it happen.

This is it. Also "You're beneath me" will absolutely KILL him. He has a thing for over-identifying with characters, and once he learns who Spike really is, there'll be no turning back...

Oh William indeed...

That's awesome too. But FFL explains *why* that is, where all that sensitivity comes from. And it's... irresistible. Oh Mark, you are not prepared.

*nods* Knowing that most of the obnoxiousness is just a mask? Just amazing.

His face!
Re. your post, then I just wanted to say that for me liking either Spike or Buffy *better* is... beside the point. What I like is the combination of the two. When they're together, they're magic. The development of the relationship is what's important, and trying to choose between them is like deciding which side of a coin I prefer - can't have one without the other.

And yet his favorite characters are more or less bullies.

They got very capslocky for a while. It was... difficult.
but I like your predictions!
I've thought it for a while, but I'm now confident enough to put it out there. :)
I'll definitely have to check out his review of that episode.
What I *don't* know is in what manner he'll react. Will it be flailing or capslocking or quiet contemplating on how He's Just Like Spike or... No, not sure.

Not quite the same thing. :P
I mean by that measure, he could side with Cecily.
I think he could be offended by it. The episode, that is. It's not really about making Spike sympathetic as much as showing the results of social posturing and fake persona both at the party and later as Spike attempts to woo Buffy with a tale of violence, murder and mayhem. His fake persona literally does put him beneath her (on his knees before her, he put himself there, not the other way around...) as a result of that mask.
So this guy, who frankly I think is pretty fake himself, could take offense to what is a pretty stern rebuke on it. Spike tried to shake off being bullied by turning into one and ended up back where he started.

Anyway, I guess we'll have to wait and see. From what I've seen so far, I think he'll fall head-over-heels for Spike, but you never know. People are unpredictable...

Anyway, it's not so much that I think 'Mark will like him' as 'I can't imagine Mark not falling so hard he hurts himself.' ;)

Hopefully it'll be back in a bit...
I'm not sure I trust the opinion of anyone who doesn't love Spike after Fool For Love!

It usually comes back fairly quickly. And the S4 reviews... get over the CAPLOCKS after a bit, so just tell yourself that it'll get better. *g* He's doing S1 of AtS too of course. :)

Heh. People like that do exist, and not all of them are mad Bangels (not that all Bangels are mad).

I remember at the time a fair number of people very upset that their pet theories about Spike's backstory were jossed. I imagine most of them have gotten over than by now!
I managed to soldier through an entire Mark review in all caps-- Initiative, of all things. You're right, it did get better.
(not that all Bangels are mad)
LOL! No one shipper community has the patent on madness! I've seen just as many crazy spuffy fans. Well, probably more as I don't tend to seek out bangel meta. And I occasionally go over to a certain Buffy forum, and am always surprised to see that there are totally irrational Buffy/ Xander shippers...

Well, let's hope so - for their sake! :)

IKR? He doesn't deal well with plot twists...
