Tired thoughts.

From Neil Gaiman:

Some thoughts on writing, and driving in fog, and the usual

It's a weird thing, writing.

Sometimes you can look out across what you're writing, and it's like looking out over a landscape on a glorious, clear summer's day. You can see every leaf on every tree, and hear the birdsong, and you know where you'll be going on your walk.

And that's wonderful.

Sometimes it's like driving through fog. You can't really see where you're going. You have just enough of the road in front of you to know that you're probably still on the road, and if you drive slowly and keep your headlamps lowered you'll still get where you were going.

And that's hard while you're doing it, but satisfying at the end of a day like that, where you look down and you got 1500 words that didn't exist in that order down on paper, half of what you'd get on a good day, and you drove slowly, but you drove.

And sometimes you come out of the fog into clarity, and you can see just what you're doing and where you're going, and you couldn't see or know any of that five minutes before.

And that's magic.

~~~
Read that the other day and oh, isn't it just perfect? <3
March Madness has started again and it's this odd thing on the very edge of my vision. Life is so busy that I can't even begin to contemplate caring about it. (And oh, I adored last year...) Although if you are desperate to get more votes for your darlings, I'll oblige. I have no affiliations apart from the Doctor and River (and Spike & Buffy, natch).
I keep meaning to write posts (about Lent and... other things which escape my mind right now), but I just never have the time/energy, as whenever I *do* have time I try to work on my fic (posted Chapter 7 yesterday). Reckon there'll be 3 more chapters (+ an epilogue). Why do I do this to myself? Well, I do it because I can't not write it... It's nibbling at the back of my mind wherever I am.
Anyway, must go. So much to do... This was a very random post.
In my experience Neil Gaimen has the perfect thing to say more often than not!
I'm home for the afternoon; think I'll get caught up on your fic. I started it and really enjoyed the first chapter or two!
[identity profile] zanthinegirl.livejournal.com 2012-03-06 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh you should totally read Gaimen. He's fabulous; I've enjoyed everything of his I've read, and I've read quite a bit of his stuff. Though if I had to pick just one book it would be American Gods. It's easily one of the best books I've read in the last ten years or so. It manages to be both entertaining and thought provoking; I honestly can't recommend it enough.
eta for readability!
If you have a kindle, or don't mind reading on your computer, I can send you a copy ;-)
I needed to reread that today. It's Back to Middle-earth Month in Tolkien fandom, and the fic I'm currently working on is one of those where I'm writing it because the idea was awesome, but the execution isn't as fun, and the best part about finishing will be the fact that it's done. I'm in the fog right now, and I'm looking forward to getting out so I can work on other projects.
Oh god March Madness.
I'm already side-eying half of the people in fandom who are claiming that Eleven is the biggest douchebag in the universe because he's written by Steven Moffat.
[identity profile] masakochan.livejournal.com 2012-03-06 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
IKR? There was a total love-fest at the end of that contest.
I'm going to be putting together a civil-sounding, AND comprehensive list on why Eleven might be a jackass sometimes, but Ten is definitely not a guy who is made of sunshine (no matter how much some Ten fans want to think that way).
JFIODSAFS Series 3. That series alone gives me many not-nice feelings about Ten.
[identity profile] masakochan.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
I've already got an Objection reply written up about Eleven.
I'm still kinda sitting on my hands as to whether I should do the Ten thing because I don't want to deal with arguments from angry Ten fans.
[identity profile] slackerspice.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, people are probably gonna be pissed either way, but it's up to you on that.
[identity profile] masakochan.livejournal.com 2012-03-08 08:16 am (UTC)(link)
@ the ETA: Heh. You just might have something there.
[identity profile] masakochan.livejournal.com 2012-03-08 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you watched Seven? Eleven is SO MUCH LIKE SEVEN. ♥ ♥ ♥)
Nope, not yet. I'm still waaaaay back with One and Marco Polo.
I think [livejournal.com profile] sahiya told me the same thing about Eleven and Seven (which means I'm getting more excited for when I get to him- aside from Two). :D
[identity profile] masakochan.livejournal.com 2012-03-08 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it'll definitely take me some time, to do it in order, in between online 3D animation class projects. >.>
But oh, Seven. Seven is MY DARLING
Sounds like me with Nine. I mean, Eleven was my first Doctor, is still my top favorite, and god knows I love him- but NINE. <3 <3 <3
Ten was just Ten
Maybe one of the reasons was that that he was most 'human' version? Out of all the Doctors I've seen so far- he actually sticks out to me for the fact that it just didn't seem like he had that much oddness to him, aside from him being a Timelord.
Heh- considering that Matt Smith has fanboy'd about Patrick Troughton- I'd take that as a good sign. xD
Yeah, that was a rather impressive hate post :-\
I'm kinda digging the "Team Not Moffat" icons, though. They're just cute *g*
[identity profile] masakochan.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah- it can be a very convincing argument.
Hopefully some will see my reply that brings up the fact that Eleven is full to the brim with self-loathing even though he runs around fezzes and bowties. :/
Did it involve gifs and a lot of capslock?
[identity profile] masakochan.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
No. Meaning it'll probably get overlooked.
I don't see how I could do that other than going "ELEVEN PRETTY MUCH LOATHES HIMSELF AND NEEDS RIVER TO VERBALLY SMACK SOME SENSE INTO HIM THAT MILLIONS OF PEOPLE LOVE HIM!" with lots of gifs of Eleven crying and tearing up.
So far- one person's responded to me with "Well, Matt's also said that Eleven's also an intergalactic playboy- so he's still the douchiest."
I'm just going to settle for staring at my laptop for a few minutes. :/
[identity profile] masakochan.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 04:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I brought that quote up from Matt, and talked about how there is so much blood and guilt that the guy would do himself in.
The only response so far has been this one conversation I had with someone about Matt talking about how the Doctor wants to go around the universe with a pretty girl on his arm, and flirt without having to deal with the rubbish. :/
[identity profile] masakochan.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
:( Already posted that wonderful vid from Confidential.
And those are some brilliant quotes, but like I said to [livejournal.com profile] owlsie - (along with this being the hate reply/post) most replies sound like they're from people who: 1) Despise Moffat, 2) Can't stand Eleven, 3) Are massive Ten fans, 4) a combo of all the above. :/
Which actually- I really don't issue with a lot of a that. If they want to hate Eleven- that's cool. I'm just irritated at a lot of their pointing out ignores that Eleven feels terrible for most of happens, and it just feels like they're pointing out all the bad things while ignoring some of the issues that have to also be examined when talking about those parts in the series.
By this point- Eleven looks like he's doing a bit better in the polls, but most likely won't be able to get ahead of Donna. And I've already voted for Amy so I might start campaigning for her, since Donna's already won the contest before. >>
ETA: That link apparently goes to the main page 3- you have to scroll down a bit, but the response isn't that hard to spot.
Funny thing, I voted without really looking at the promotion threads (randomly selecting names for those things I didn't know square one about). So when I took a glance, all I could think was "Dudes, I'm here to vote for my shit, not yours. So put me down for Team IDGAF."
On the other hand, it's fandom, not the government, so if you feel like sending a vote Loki's way (The Avengers), I'd be much obliged.
[identity profile] slackerspice.livejournal.com 2012-03-07 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL. Well it's all very chaotic early on... It gets fun when the campaigning settles down a bit more. :)
To be honest, it's the anti-character threads that have be a bit leery.
Thanks for the vote! Here's your complimentary Hiddles.
Hey, anyone who can lie to someone by using the truth gets my vote any day.
