So... that Mark. I think I've worked it out. :)

(Karen Gillan in my icon is doing a Mark impression...)

First of all, then many thanks go to [livejournal.com profile] gabrielleabelle for suggesting that Mark is so... OTT in his Buffy reviews because he expects angst. Because suddenly he was easy to diagnose. Basically he suffers from pre-Traumatic Joss Syndrome.

His tagline is 'You're Not Prepared', but this actually misleading. I don't mean that he's spoiled, but he is prepared. Here are my approximations of his mindset for various things:

Buffy:
'OH NOES IT'S JOSS AND HE LOVES TO STAB PEOPLE IN THE BACK WHEN THEY FEEL HAPPY! EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE PERPETUAL HEARTBREAK, ANYONE COULD DIE AT ANYTIME! WILL IT BE THIS EPISODE THAT BREAKS ME FOR GOOD? OR THIS ONE? OR THIS ONE? OR...'

Lord of the Rings:
'OMG EVERYTHING IS EPIC AND EVERYTHING IS THE FOUNDATION OF ALL FANTASY THAT COMES AFTER AND HOW SHALL I DEAL???'

Moffat Who:
'EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE CLEVER AND COMPLICATED OH NOES WHAT-IS-GOING-ON-I-CAN'T-WORK-IT-OUT-HELP!!!!'

Twilight:
'THIS IS PROBABLY GOING TO BE RUBBISH AND TERRIBLE - AAAAAAAH! IT'S EVEN WORSE THAN I THOUGHT! HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE? AND IT KEEPS GETTING WORSE...'

Agreed - high school drama - stolen smoochies (and could that be any more high school! It's perfect!), romance to die for, butt hurt and feeling alone - and, of yeah...classes.

One point I forgot - what is with this notion that Cordelia gave up more than anyone because she took an elevator down in regard to her social status in order to go out with Xander? Did he realize the point of the earlier ep is that Cordelia realized she didn't want to be a sheep? So now, with Xander out of the pic, I'm supposed to have sympathy because Cordy lost her flock?! Talk about buying into the high school drama rankings!

I think he's taking everything very personally - and that comment shows a very strange set of values.

Cordy is the most damaged, the most injured because she is no longer Miss Popularity....puhlease!

Maybe it's simple burnout - but I could use more on the episode and less on Mark this time. But I do like the Giles bits - damn I love Giles!

Yeah - people do have favorites (Spike) and I can understand really focusing on them (Spike) and wanting to stick up for them (Spike). No that I would ever do that (Spike). I am far too mature (Spike). ;-)

Nope - but I'm about to!

That's a hoot - I'm a Universalista, but I have to admit I started as a Catholica.

I still only read fanfic with Spike in it. It's an addiction, but it's less fattening than pistachios and I get to keep my fingernails.

I think that makes me an Apologista Slashista - one of those frustrated middle aged (yeah - I'm gonna live to 112) women who search each scene for significant glances, and clandestine groping. Body language is everything, and we know that whenever Angel and Spike were off screen they were writhing together all sweaty and panting. Unless it was Spike and Wesley. Or Spike and Giles.

Have you ever read Tea and Biscuits - I take my hat off to any authors who managed to create Spike/Giles/Wesley/Angel/Ethan. Thankfully not all together though the combinations are interesting.
