Lovers Walk.

Just by the way, for anyone disappointed with Mark's review of Lovers Walk, here's a link to Arbitrar of Quality's review. (Same deal: Unspoiled first time viewer, a ton of rot-13 in the comments etc. for those who weren't around at the time. But, uh, AOQ's take on things was... different to Mark's. *g*)

I liked his comment about the title - will admit that was something I hadn't thought about.

I am going to re-watch all of BtVS again ... ages since I have done that. See all the episodes, not just the one or two faves.

Hey Deb... you're over on FB, right? (I'm pretty sure I have you friended there.) There's a group of us starting a rewatch this week 2012 Buffy Re-watch

I'm not sure I trust the arbitration of someone who thinks "Band Candy" was the weakest episode of the season so far.

I sort of saw Mark's reaction coming. He's made it very clear his favorite character is Cordelia, and everything she goes through in this episode is devastating. All we have to do now is wait for his reaction to The Wish..

I have to admit, I simply do not understand that. He says he was brutally bullied in high school and yet his favorite character starts off as a huge bully something she doesn't reform herself of until s2(?) of AtS.

[identity profile] infinitewhale.livejournal.com 2012-02-11 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)

His bully probably didn't look like Cordy. :P

I think he's more spoiled than he lets on.

Well, there was the thing with him doing a chapter by chapter review of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. On a podcast- he talked about how he became a nervous wreck about being spoiled over the final few chapters, and he finally caved to finishing the book quickly- but then waited to post the reviews.

Mark lost me the moment he posted his review saying he enjoyed "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered." I have always loathed that episode, for so many reasons.

It's just that, in a series that I have so much feminist love for, this episode uses sexist tropes I despise. My bar is lower for most media, but for Buffy I expect some intelligence when it comes to depicting women.

Thanks. BBB is one of those great Xander episodes where Buffy actually thanks him for not raping her.

Given the number of times that sort of thing is played with in the series, I kind of think it's unlikely Joss would have seen it that way. Of course, it *is* called out in Dead Things, but that's the only time.

All the review posts almost makes me want to rewatch again. I don't know if I can, though. Thinking about BTVS and AtS just makes me sad now...

[identity profile] gabrielleabelle.livejournal.com 2012-02-11 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I get a weird vibe that Mark is FEELING more because he's expecting angst, you know? Like, I know a friend's mom who started crying when she saw a shot of a baby doll at the beginning of the Titanic just because she'd heard that it was a sad movie. So you get yourself in the mood and ANYTHING will trigger it.

Cause...Lovers Walk is pretty low on the devastation scale for the show. And he's had some weirdly disproportional reactions before. Joss is know for teh angsting, so I think there's some skewiness in perception going on.

Loved the Arbitrar of Quality review. Thanks for linking! :)

ETA: He has pre-Traumatic Joss Syndrome?

Haha! Indeed. :)

Ha! You know, I think you might be on to something there . . .

[identity profile] slackerspice.livejournal.com 2012-02-14 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I couldn't say that I was disappointed - I was too busy laughing my ass off. All I could think was "Dude, if you're this upset now..."

[identity profile] slackerspice.livejournal.com 2012-02-14 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I keep thinking that by the time he reaches The Gift, he'll have been reduced to an incoherent, screaming wreck.

[identity profile] slackerspice.livejournal.com 2012-02-14 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I can see it now - a review totally comprised of a looong stream of BUFFY NO I HATE YOU JOSS DIE DAMN YOU DIE.

[identity profile] slackerspice.livejournal.com 2012-02-14 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
At that point, he'll be catatonic. Or at least going "Puppies? Puppies now?"
