Chapter 4
“Ethan Rayne?” Spike said, pondering. “Now why does that ring a bell?”
Angel looked at him and tried to recall if Spike had been around for any of the guy’s shenanigans. Then a memory surfaced: Halloween - Buffy in a beautiful dress and Spike bending over her, ready to bite, as he himself watched helplessly.
“Halloween,” he said. “The enchanted costumes. That was Ethan’s work. Came back a few more times, but I don’t think you were there.”
Spike smiled, then began to chuckle. “Halloween? That was him? Now that was a bloody brilliant night! Soul-stealing apart, I like this guy’s style!”
Angel stared at him, incredulous: “You nearly killed Buffy!”
Spike looked back, uncomprehending: “So?”
Angel was speechless for a second, then snarled: “Well, I can see what you meant when you said that you were still a good guy without the soul.”
Spike’s eyes narrowed to blue slits: “It was funny! Buffy and I used to laugh about it. Go on - call her. Ask. She’ll say it was fucking hilarious!”
Before Angel could answer, Wesley cleared his throat. “So - who is this Ethan Rayne?”
Stepping back from Spike, Angel redirected his focus, trying to calm down. Damn the platinum wonder - he was far too good at pressing his buttons.
“He used to be a Watcher. An old friend of Giles’ and into dark magick. Worshipped Chaos.” He stopped for a moment, and glanced at Spike. “Suppose he still does - it would explain the soul stealing. Releasing William the Bloody should result in a great deal of chaos.”
“Well, unlucky for him that I don’t swing that way anymore!” Spike chipped in, that smug look on his face again that made Angel want to punch him, although he knew it wouldn’t help. He’d always been like this - ever since he was a fledgling, and not all the torment that Angelus could dish out had ever broken him.
Ignoring him, Wesley mused out loud. “A Watcher? Maybe the Council could be persuaded to help? I doubt they’ll want any scandals -”
He was interrupted by a sudden laugh from Spike. “That’s it! Old friend of Giles’ - this is getting better and better! Can we keep him around when we find him? He would liven this place up no end!”
“What now Spike?” Angel sighed. As if Spike wasn’t obnoxious enough with the soul...
“Ethan Rayne. Came to Sunnydale the year after you left and turned Giles into a Fyarl demon. Now that was a stroke of genius!”
“A Fyarl demon?” Wesley asked, astonished. “Giles?”
“Oh you should have seen it Percy - it was a sight to behold.” He sighed deeply. “Although... he was arrested by Buffy’s toy boy. Must have escaped I suppose.”
“He was arrested?” Gunn said, suddenly interested. “Then he’ll have a criminal record. We can find him in no time.” He looked round at the others. “I take it that that’s it? We concentrate on finding the guy?”
Angel nodded. “Shouldn’t be too hard - he might still be in town. Oh - and keep Spike’s... em... condition a secret, OK?”
Nods all around. Angel turned to the sofa. “Fred, maybe you could-” he stopped, seeing that she was fast asleep.
The others turned, following his glance. Spike smiled. “She was up all night. Got her to eat something, but she obviously still needed sleep.”
Wesley nodded. “Typical. And I told her to go home... I suppose we ought to wake her. I could give her a lift.”
Angel slowly shook his head. “Let her sleep. I’ve got tons of paperwork to get through anyway. Gunn - you’ll get your department on this? Wesley - try to find out how it was done.”
Gunn and Wesley nodded and left, leaving Lorne and Spike. Lorne was talking urgently, and Angel could see Spike’s increasing unease. You could take the empath demon out of the karaoke bar....
Backing away from Lorne, Spike was now stood by the door and called out to Angel: “Um... I’ll go tell Fred’s lab rats that she won’t be in until later, OK?”
Angel nearly protested, but then changed his mind. It’d get Spike out of the way for a little while - he had a nasty suspicion that his grandchilde would be his snarky shadow all day. He could see Lorne’s shoulders slumping in defeat, but well - disappointment was a part of life.
“Fine. Just - behave!”
Spike grinned at him and curled his tongue behind his teeth. “Whatever you say Pops!”
Angel watched him swan out of the office, and wondered if he was being completely insane, trusting Spike. But surely he could behave just for a little while, right?

Oh yes, fat chance :D
Spike falling back into a bit of bratty fledgling behavior around Angel is so sweet.

Feedback from Edelweiss
(Anonymous) 2008-05-25 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)He could see Lorne’s shoulders slumping in defeat I fully agree that this would most likely be Spike's reaction to Lorne's well meant attempted kindness ... he always likes to make his own future!
But surely he could behave just for a little while, right? Why do I have an uneasy feeling about those words/thoughts? That said, once again lovely Angel/Spike interaction and you did an excellent job of illustrating the differences between the two vampires too.

Re: Feedback from Edelweiss
Spike is always just Spike - I loved writing this, and exploring just what difference the soul would make - or not! ;)
I fully agree that this would most likely be Spike's reaction to Lorne's well meant attempted kindness ... he always likes to make his own future!
Yes. He doesn't want help or advice, no matter how well-meant.
Why do I have an uneasy feeling about those words/thoughts?
Because sometimes Angel can be rather perceptive. *g*
That said, once again lovely Angel/Spike interaction and you did an excellent job of illustrating the differences between the two vampires too.
Thank you! ::beams::
