On the eve before the new series, two things.

1. It struck me today, that who River is, is more important than who she is in relation to the Doctor.

I have this weird idea with River...

You see, if you think about Amy's wedding, you've got River giving Amy the diary. Which
1) how did she know to do that?
but leaving that aside, there's another question
2) why is she there in the first place?

What if River is originally from present-day Earth?

I'll get back to 1 and 2 tomorrow (I'm on my way to bed), but I'd say that the one thing we know for sure about her is that she's a 51st Century archeologist.

Well Moffat - in the podcast for 'Forest of the Dead' - describes her as 'a 51st Century woman'. Hang on, I've got it somewhere...

Moffat: You can sort of imagine that there was a television series where Alex Kingston rode around space with her little team of Daves and Anita. Probably romantically linked to all of them!
DT: *sporfle* [beat] What - you don’t think she’s... uh, faithful? To her husband... I’m not suggesting who her husband may be, but...
Moffat: Why would she be faithful to her husband if she doesn’t have one?
DT: In not suggesting that she has a husband, but if she were to have a husband... I think she’d be faithful to him.

It's the one thing that's been consistent, and I don't think they've been lying. There could be LAYERS of course...

Anyway, she could have remembered the Doctor (the diary could have triggered her memory), but I'm drawing a blank as to why she was on 21st century earth. That'll probably be explained.

Yeah, that first occurred to me when I was filling out Meweit's questionnaire about why I love River Song. There are two questions people ask about River Song and it goes in this order: 1.) Who is River Song? 2.) Who is she to the Doctor? I love that WHO she is has become more important than who she is to him. It puts her above what one would expect from a female character who was brought in just as a romantic interest. Even in interviews, people aren't asking, "Are we going to find out if River Song is the Doctor's wife?" People are asking, "Are we going to find out who River Song is?" That's just brilliant!
