Elisabeth Sladen, aka Sarah Jane Smith, has passed away.

I honestly, genuinely, do not know how to tell my children.

ETA: From looking at wiki, they were apparently working on S5 of SJA, but it's unclear whether it had been completed or not. However, I am so grateful she got to meet Ten and Eleven. To quote calapine from her review of the first part of 'Death of the Doctor', because it sums everything up just beautifully (even though it also chokes me up):

"Hello, Sarah Jane," says Eleventy because Doctors have to do that to Sarah now and look at her beautifully with love and he does.

I was deliberately holding the last two eps of SJA to watch this week to tide me over when I got twitch for new Who. No idea when I'll watch that now.

My eleven year old sister was in the room when I saw the news on LJ. She was pretty upset. She loved SJA because Doctor Who is too scary for her.

I think its really hard for kids especially cause on some level, when you are that age, it's difficult to separate actors from the characters they play.

SJA was purely for children, which I think made a big difference. (I'd classify DW as a family show, I think.)

And yeah, it's hard... :(

Okay, I heard the news a few minutes ago and while it was a stab in the heart I didn't cry.

Then I saw the quote and GIF you posted and I completely lost it. Crying forever now. The day I watched Sarah Jane in School Reunion was the day she became my favorite companion with no parallel. She was a strong woman who essentially redefined what a companion should be in her time. I can't believe that Lis, who brought her to life, is gone.

The Doctor won't ever forget Sarah Jane, and WE won't ever forget Lis.

*hugshugshugs* The quote was honestly one of the first things that sprang to mind - the fact that she was just Sarah and desperately important to the Doctor. And then I found the gif on doctoreleven and completely choked up (again) because it was so perfect...

It's just beautiful. And the gif actually from 'Journey's End' - the S4 DW finale - where she comes to help save the world, but afterwards runs off joyfully (she has a whole life, including a son) and it's just the most wonderful thing.

Hmmmm, very strange not to feel a part of the general mourning, but then I remember how I felt when Mr. Rogers died, so I imagine this must be something of the like.

I wouldn't feel the same way at all if it wasn't for the kids, but SJA is one of their favourite programmes and because of that I know the show - and its star - very, very well. And how many 60 something female heroes are there out there anyway? She was *amazing*.
